Project Board / First time restoration !
« on: September 29, 2020, 07:05:39 PM »
Hi
Looking for advice on taking on my first restoration.
Bit of background, been riding Hondas since 1976 when Ipassed my test, I had a CB250G5 (had a C90, CD75 before that) and then progressed to CB750K7, VF1000 and various others and currently have a 1998 Blackbird with 95k miles on since I got it new.
Anyway, originally I was looking for my old 750 but as I couldn't find it (its SORNed and with no MOT somewhere)so I thought of getting another 750 to restore.
However as its my first I don't want to run before I can walk so thought maybe a CB250G5 would be a better way to start, plus they are cheaper as are the parts.
So is one of those a good way to dip my toes into the restoration game, I'm 67 and work part time and over the winter will be looking for stuff to do so thought this might stop me getting too bored !
Or should I bite the bullet and go for something bigger ?
Everyone has to start somewhere !

New Member Introductions / Another newbie :-)

Hi
Been riding since 1969 and had loads of different bikes but no 'fads' as I like to try and keep a bike as long as I can, currently own a 1998 Blackbird with 88k miles on her and a newer Tracer (yeah sorry!) which I got a couple of years ago and really like.
Anyoldway, my first proper bike was a CD175, went up to a Superdream 250 and then to a CB750K7 which I bought new from Bill Smiths in Chester (in the old place) in 1979. I kept the 750 for best part of 9 years and then sold it, which, in retrospect I shouldn't have done because it was a great bike, the photoo is me and the missus in 1981 setting off for Switzerland from Aberdeenshire on our first biking trip abroad.

Anyway the reason I have joined this is because I really fancy taking a poor old 750 and restoring it to as near standard as possible. I know my mechanical limitations but I also remember taking the engine out of the 750, powder coating the frame and just basically fettling, which with the new bikes you just can't do.

At the moment we are waiting to move house but the intention is to build a decent garage where I can make it decent enough to spend my dotage in and do some restoring so you can expect a lot of questions once I get going !

One question I do have, having read a  lot of posts on here, seems the 750k's are popular up to and including the K6, why is the K7 not as popular, is there something I don't know !!
