There is a survey going on at present about fuel. The results will be fed into the Government consultation document (or something like that). Helping you clutch at straws here Roy. Is the valve stem seal intact, a good fit, not cracked or ripped. Easy one to check and costs nothing 😀😀😀 Is the valve stem the correct size, ie, the same as the other valves?

A cheap simple and quick diagnostic test would be to pop the lines out, swap them around and see if the problem moves cylinders.
When you say lines, do you mean the HT leads?

Cracked liner ?.
Although re bored, did the liner clean up 100%, ie no scoring, or rust pockets beyond what what bored ?. (The reason i say this is because Trig has rebored some barrels to .25 they still showed a minute mark on 1 liner, continued to rebore all the way up to 1.0 and the marks were still there, pushed the liner out and the rust had gone all the way through to the outside of the liner).

Out at a bike night at the Aviation Heritage Centre just along the road from us at East Kirkby where they have the privately owned AVRO Lancaster. Huge turn out of bikes, probably well over 500, of all sorts. Forum member Rusty Nuts was in attendance, we bump in to each other quite often at bike nights in Lincs, he wasn't on his SOHC tonight though.

Agree with both John and Dave. The CB400/4 is very revvy, hates lugging and it is a constant up and down the gearbox job. Great fun to ride and performs at its best being riden hard but no good for a lazy pootle around, they really do not like it. I also have a Honda CD250u, twin, you can ride it hard and it will put up with everything you give it but you can also pootle around in 5th gear and ride her around all day. The CB550/4 is the best of both worlds, will absolutely fly when you want her to, handling is exceptional and you can really throw her around, or you can plod along, taking it easy, she doesn't mind either way.
