Have a look on M&P website, search for mirror extenders. Had them on my 400/4 for a while, just give you that extra bit of width (40mm approx) to see past your elbows. Use with original mirrors.

CB350/400 / 400/4 stripped thread
« on: September 11, 2018, 06:44:35 PM »
I had a stripped thread on the crankcase where the clutch cover fits. Not having a huge amount of mechanical expertise, I was inspired by Nurse Julie's posts, and others, to have ago at sorting it.
I bought the bottom end of a 400/4 engine from Fryerk (cheers Kevin) very cheaply, and had a go at a helicoil on this before trying on my bike. The helicoil turned out to be pretty straight forward.
The stripped thread was accessible without taking the engine out. I took the clutch cover off, and had a mild panic as the kick start shaft came out with it, but pretty straight forward to relocate it.
The helicoil was straight forward again, as my practice run. Put a new gasket on. I read the different views about grease/no grease, and decided to put it on dry. Had fun and games initially getting the cover back on as the kickstart shaft was not fully seated, but once I'd sussed that, it went back together.  New filter and oil, and Bob's your uncle. A very satisfying few hours thanks to the excellent advice on the forum.

Thanks Matthew and Hairy. Good advice. Had a look at the fuse box and there is some corrosion, so will give that a clean up. Also some fuses have wrong ratings so will replace. Tried the wd40 on the key trick. Left it a while, turned it on and off a few times, and blow me, back to normal!
Think I'll go over the other connections as well to hopefully avoid future problems.
Cheers for the tips.

CB500/550 / 550 k3 electric failure
« on: April 22, 2018, 08:04:28 AM »
Was out on a run on the 550 yesterday. It was running really well for 25 miles or so. First hint of trouble was when it hesitated, backfired, but then it was fine. I came to a junction, and the electrics completely died. Pushed it to a layby, and the main fuse had blown. Replaced the fuse but still absolutely dead.

I've checked the battery which seems ok, and even tried a spare charged battery, but nothing. Have taken the earth lead from the battery off where it connects to frame, it looked ok but I cleaned it anyway. Still nothing.

I'm after some advice as to what to look at next?? I was thinking fuse box terminals and ignition switch. How would I go about testing these? I have a multi meter, but pretty clueless tbh.

Anything else obvious I should be looking at?

Any advice gratefully received. Cheers.

Had this some years back on my 400/4.  Turned out it was dirty connections where the main fuse sits in the fuse holder. Cleaned it up and it has been fine since.

Had exactly this problem on my 400/4, 1977. New cable sorted it.

Has anyone run their bikes on Aspen? Looks to be a pretty expensive option.

CB350/400 / 400/4 spark plug helicoil
« on: August 10, 2015, 08:59:03 PM »
Looking to sort the plug threads on my 400/4. From past posts, helicoils look to be the way to go.
I have read the inserts can come out when you take the plugs out?? Has anyone had any issues with helicoils?
Many thanks
Harold.

On holiday for a week in Dorset, and thought I'd drop in to Sammy Miller Museum. What I didn't realise that it was the official opening of the extension today.

Steve, your cutaway 750 engine takes pride of place as one of the exhibits in the new extension!
I was looking at the museum's 400/4, when Sammy Miller, Murray Walker and John Surtees walked by. They were very friendly and chatty, and John Surtees said what great bike the 400/4 was, and that he used to own one.  Quite an experience to bump into these legends!

Thanks for that. Bike does run well, so sounds like it's not too much of an issue.

CB350/400 / 400/4 missing breather chamber
« on: March 14, 2015, 04:51:06 PM »
After some advice please.
Discovered my bike is missing the metal grille that sits at the bottom of the air filter box. On looking into this, I found the whole breather chamber assembly beneath the air filter is also missing.
Am I right in thinking the hose from the breather cover on the top of the engine is supposed to go into the breather assembly under the air filter?? At the moment, it runs right down by the centre stand.
Bike seems to run ok, but would the absence of a breather unit affect running??
Any comments much appreciated.
Cheers
Harold

CB350/400 / DSS pattern mudguard for 400/4
« on: January 02, 2015, 04:51:24 PM »
Happy New Year to all.
Has anyone bought a DSS pattern front mudguard for a 400/4 recently?? Can you let me know what the quality of chrome finish is like, and also if they fit ok?? Is there much of a difference compared with a genuine Honda mudguard?
Many thanks
Harold

Ash,
Plus another 1. Enjoyed your posts of film clips. Friend of mine has bought an NSU quickly which featured on one of the clips briefly. It's not a Honda, but it's a good little project.
There is a fine line between banter and rudeness, often crossed without realising.
Keep posting.
