CB500/550 / Clutch work
« on: May 29, 2016, 12:18:26 AM »
Can I work on the clutch without draining the oil, i.e. Is the sump deep enough to take clutch cover off without oil pissing out 😀😀😀

CB500/550 / Hatsu Hits the Road
« on: May 26, 2016, 02:35:28 PM »
6 Months of engine rebuild, frame painting and much removal of gunk and Hatsu hits the road complete with freshly issued age related plate

Why Hatsu you may ask - it's a girls's name that means "first born" as it's a K0 - clever eh  ;) ;) ;)

So it's Hatsu the Honda from now on

CB500/550 / Headlight Bulb and being seen better
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:20:40 AM »
I like to be seen by all those dreamers in cars 😀😀

So am thinking of upgrading front bulb to a Halogen unit

Can anyone tell me any recommendations in terms of wattage, I know std spec is 40/50W but  anyone gone brighter also is halogen brighter at same wattage as incandescent.

I was thinking of a 60/55 Halogen but will the alternator output cope with this ok if lights are on all the time as I like

Any assistance appreciated

CB500/550 / DVLA Aaaagh!!
« on: April 26, 2016, 06:24:35 AM »
Sent off mŷ V55 2 weeks ago along with
VJMC Stamped dating letter
Photos of bike
Photos of vin plate clearly showing 10/71
Photos of engine number
Mot

And yet they still now want to come and do an inspection which will take apparently 5 days to arrange and then....

Worse still because I could only insure on the vin number for 4 weeks apparently my insurance which cost me 70 quid will lapse and will need to be re taken out

How much evidence do they need

Maybe a picture of a japanese factory worker off the original line holding a calendar of 1971 up would have helped  :) :) :)

This may have been posted before but I really struggled with getting my carbs on and off, after some experimentation I seem to have mastered the easiest way. I can have the carbs off in 15 minutes and back on in 20.

Here is how it goes..........

1) Remove the air filter and airbox, remove the throttle cables, remove tank.
2) Undo the clamps on the engine side and the airbox side and remove the airbox side clamps as it just saves them from getting bent and in the way generally. You can slide them around and off pretty easily.
3) Now push the airbox to carb rubbers back in to the airbox a bit using fingers/blunt screwdriver whatever. You dont need to push them right through just back about an inch util they are off the lip that holds them in the right location relative to tteh carbs.
4) Now you have gained a bit of extra space and the carbs can be pulled off the intake and waggled free pretty easily.

5) To get it all back together slide the carbs back i. From the righ seems easier for some odd reason.
6) Now -  for the middle two rubbers put your hand through the hole in the back of the airbox and push them back out to the right position. Bit fiddly but a combination of pushing and rotating works pretty easily
7) For the two outer rubbers you can pull these through from the engine side easily to their right position
8) Put clamps back on and tighten, refit cables and tank and ride off in to the sunse
9) You are now a carb jeddi  :) :) :)

Two things that help

A) A spray of silicone lubricant or similar helpe with the pulling/pushing.

B) If the rubbers are old and brittle you are going to break them.

I hope this is of some help to others - I really struggled until I got this technique and it's just so easy.

I guess this only fails if you have such giant hands you cant get them inside the airbox but they'd be some mighty big hands I think.

CB500/550 / Ignition Timing and Unleaded
« on: April 18, 2016, 02:28:46 PM »
I am assuming that the timing marks on the '71 K0 500 were set for leaded fuel. Does anyone recommend advancing the timing any on these engines to account for the slower burn rate of unleaded vs leaded fuel.

If so any tried and tested level of advance?

I need to change circlip position on my needles but one of the small 3mm screws is rounded off. The one right at the bottom.

I could try and drill the head off but I am a bit reluctant to put the slide  in a vice in case I squeeze to hard and damage the slide. The slides are not cheap to replace methinks

Any other bright ideas !!ideas !!

CB500/550 / Number plate size
« on: April 16, 2016, 07:47:19 AM »
Hopefully my buddies at DVLA will issue my age related number this week

As its a 71 bike I want a black/silver plate but I am unclear as to what size of plate is required for a bike of this age

Sorry if this been asked before but I couldn't find a clear answer from searching

CB500/550 / Initial Startup really bad idle - Help Needed
« on: April 01, 2016, 08:40:53 AM »
All back together and ready for MOT now BUT..............really poor idling problem  :( :( :(

Symptoms --- starts OK even from cold but sounds like a tractor  >:( >:(  moving choke doesnt seem to make a whole lot of change. Also I noticed that adjusting the pilot air screws doesnt seem to induce any change in engine note but to be fair this is the first time I have worked on a four and I was only moving the screw about 1/4 turn either way. SO I am not sure really what I should be listening for here.

Once warm she sounds better but still a bit lumpy, blipping throttle off idle to say 3k RPM sounds really good

What I have done ........

A) Carbs all cleaned out including all jets removed and cleaned and all appear clear. All jets are original Keihin and fitted with new O rings.

B) Carbs have been balanced

C) New points and condensors fitted and timing strobe checked

D) New intake boots and no air leaks detected

E) All pilot air screws set unitially at 1 turn out

Overall it sounds to me like overfuelling at idle the only thing I have NOT done is removed the pilot air screws and cleand all their orifices

My plan as I really dont want to take the carbs off agaiin

1) Recheck timing with strobe

2) Recheck float heights and fuel levels using "manometer" tubes

3) Remove all pilot jets reclean and squirt a ton of carb cleaner in the pilot air  screw holes

Anything else anyone can suggest ?

Is joining VJMC maybe the best option

Just wondered what other options others have used
