CB500/550 / Odd fuel overflow from carbs

I have a very slight drip from the fuel tap when in off position and I am getting 3 carbs that will do a slight overflow overnight. (New tap on order from DSS)

What is weird though is if I leave the tap in the on position this doesn’t happen.

Am curious to figure out what is going on here. My daft theory is that if the tap is on there is enough liquid head to snap the floats closed but if there is only a slight drip going through the floats are not closing fast enough to seal the flow.

I have checked the float levels using my manometer tube and  all are fine.

Can’t get my head around this and wondered if anyone has any thoughts.

Bit fed up of going in to a fuel smelly garage each day😡😡

CB500/550 / Front brake hose sizes question

Am thinking of making up some stainless front hoses

Does anyone know the various thread fitting sizes/threads. There are 2 hoses one goes from Res to union and has 2 banjos but not sure of bolt/banjo size

the other goes from union to Union to brake pipe connector and has a banjo at one end a a straight fitting to the pipe connector

Bike is a K0 USA model and parts list quotes different part no’s for the US and European models but don’t know if that makes any difference to the fitting sizes though

CB500/550 / Throttle movement amount

A friend of mine has a UK K0 bike and I have a USA K0 bike and there is a big difference in the angle of movement from 0 to full throttle. On his UK bike I reckon it’s about 120 deg but on my US bike it’s more like 90.

The 120 movement makes his UK bike a pain to ride so was wondering if anyone knows any more.

The only variable I can think of is the diameter of the nylon bit the cable wraps round in the housing may be different

CB500/550 / Squealy front brake

Did 100 odd miles yesterday in stifling heat and from brake started squealing again. Only when applying light pressure to lever. Squeeze harder ad it stops.

That said super embarrassing as you ride around. Pads seem to release ok so am wondering if this is down to the pad material so my question is what pads do others recommend

CB500/550 / Loom routing

My main loom to the headlight shell runs on the left of the frame above the tank front locating rubbers as in the picture. I have noticed that the routing causes the loom to flex when turning the bars lock to lock.

I am concerned this flexing will eventually damage the loom wiring and was just wondering if this is the correct routing?

Anorak's Corner / UV bonding

Does anyone have any experience with UV resins for repairing plastic parts. I usually resort to reaching for the Superglue but seen some outrageous claims for this UV stuff. Seems to me that only really good for transparent materials as otherwise the UV will only cure the bond edges

Any other recommendations for high strength plastic repairs?

CB500/550 / Rectifier wiring

 I bought an Electrex reg/rect a while ago and am just thinking of getting to fit it

The plug and play connector it came with won’t work as my bike is an early K0 with the round pins.

May be a stupid question but does it matter which way round the 3 yellow wires connect from the alt to the reg/rect unit?

Just waiting for my carbs from Gerben to arrive but am having trouble finding a definitive answer on clip position.

I have searched around and can’t seem to find a definitive answer for standard bikes and seems USA and Europe may even have had different settings

He sets them on position 4 and says this is Honda standard but I have found posts that suggest middle position is standard.

Bike is completely standard ‘71 K0

Hi folks
I am still having running issues and sure it’s a carb issue.

 Bike starts fine and idles  smoothly but then feels like fuel starvation on the road.

Seems to run ok with full choke on but than as soon as I come to a stop she stops, I think due to too much choke.

Close choke restart one off ok again but then feels like it’s fuel starved and has no power.

I have adjusted the idle screws but makes no real difference and float levels are ok.

On reflection these carbs have never been right and I am seriously thinking of sending them to Gerben for a full overhaul or trade in for one of his refurbished sets.

That said it’s a big expenditure and just wondered

a) are his carbs usually spot on
b) am I wasting my money
c) Any bright other ideas

CB500/550 / Revs rising on tickover

Started bike today for first time in weeks.

 Left to warm up and tickover keeps randomly jumping to around 2k. Drop back down with idle screw and then does it again.
New plugs, carbs clean, Boyer ignition recently fully tested at Boyer, idle mixture set ok and carbs balanced

Anyone any bright ideas? I seem to recall a similar post a while ago

I have a work colleague who comes over regulalry from the USA and is happy to hand carry smallish packages for me  :) :)

I have been thinking for some time of getting one of these handy Motion Pro feeler gauges. They are available here but at ridiculous prices bur are less than $5 in USA.

I can order a number (probably 10 max) if people PM me if they want one. I am happy just to cover my costs plus UK postage

CB500/550 / Cold starting procedure?

I always seem to have trouble starting my bike from cold.

I  tend to put choke fully on and wind throttle open, fires easily but the seems to kind of flood out and die.

I have tried various combinations of choke and throttle position but just can’t seem to get right technique

Bike runs perfect when warm by the way

Can anyone recommend a set of drill bits for drilling out old Honda panhead screws and the like

I seem to continually struggle with what I thought was a simple job. My Bosch HSS bits don’t seem to touch them

I also bought a set of cobalt ones but struggle with those as well

Maybe I need a class in the art of drilling 😂😂😂
