CB500/550 / 500 and 550 4s in Decembers Classic Bike Guife
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:44:12 AM »
Worth picking up a copy if you see one.

Not a bad article, features DS and sohc.net but NO MENTION of sohc.co.uk!!!! I feel a letter coming on  ;)

Also features a £7995 550 for sale at Fowlers Bristol (nice but overpriced IMO)

CB500/550 / Boyer with micro coils installation pic
« on: November 24, 2017, 12:15:16 AM »
Here it is all in place
I used 2 pieces of Al bar bolted to the original coil brackets and fitted the coils to these
The electronic box then fits snugly on top as shown

CB500/550 / Tappet Covers - Good Source
« on: November 14, 2017, 08:21:37 AM »
I Stupidly trashed the hex nut on one of my tappet covers at the week end due to a prior overzealous tightening !!

Got one of these from fleabay - impressed with quality at £3.50. They are listed not for 4s but are exactly the same part

CB500/550 / Dodgy Rev Counter 500 4
« on: November 12, 2017, 08:40:50 AM »
Could use some advice!!

Rev counter climbs lovely to 5k then sticks  there and then jumps to 8k or thereabouts.

I have new cable, squirted some WD up the hole etc and still no better.

I am kind of coming to the conclusion that the P.O. rode around a lot just under or around 5k and it’s developed a “sticky point”

I have 3 alternatives

1) Send it for repair ( but that does look very expensive from the research I have done.

2) Source a fleabay replacement (not much around) and may be just as bad.

4) Have a bash at stripping it myself and seeing what I can do.

So now to my question, has anyone got any experience of repairing these units. I think they use a magnetic rotor system so are pretty simple so hoping a good strip and clean will sort it

CB500/550 / Boyer ignition fitting a lesson learned
« on: November 10, 2017, 02:06:15 AM »
I just finished fitting the Boyer system to my 4 but learned a hard lesson on the way that I thought I’d share.

The Boyer instructions say to remove the bob weighs and springs but do not make it clear you also have to remove the advance/ retard cam off the advance/ retard unit shaft as well.

I missed this and was confused as to why the stator plate did not fit properly and why the mag rotor fouled the chrome cover.

In my confusion I filed off the lugs on the end of the advance unit to get it to fit (unsuccessfully) without fouling the cover (thanks to Ash for replacement advance/ retard unit)

The answer was simple as always in hindsight, in that if you don’t take off the cam bush the stator plate won’t fit over the end of the advance unit properly and the mag rotor won’t fit over the end of the advance unit shaft.

It all comes down to a missing comma!!

Instruction 16 in the Boyer instructions says

“Remove the cam bobweights and springs from the advance retard unit”

It should say
“Remove the cam, bobweights and springs from the advance retard unit”

Amazing what confusion a missing , can lead to!!

As the saying goes

“Eats shoots and leaves” or alternatively “Eats, shoots and leaves”

I have notified Boyer by the way !!!

Just taken the plunge and ordered the full kit with Micro coils after months of deliberating !!

I have a question re plug caps mine are NGK purply colour ones (sorry for the crap description)

Are these OK for use with the BOyer system? Is there an easy way to check them?

Cheers all

CB500/550 / K0 or not K0 that is the question
« on: August 25, 2017, 05:03:01 PM »
I keep seeing references to K0 crankcase shapes as being square and got me wondering

My bike was made Oct '71 and both engine and frame numbers start with a 1

but I am not sure what a "square" case looks like

Is mine a K0, here's a pic. By the way never noticed the bent fin before opinions on trying to bend it back or leave it !!!

CB500/550 / Fork Gaiters

CB500/550 / Boyer suppliers and pricing and resistance
« on: July 30, 2017, 03:54:25 PM »
Been, like a few thinking of fitting a Boyer kit when I have some spare pennies.

I have identified kit 00089 for existing coils or kit 00289 that comes with coils.

I have a set of new aftermarket coils, so was thinking of using 00089 but what is the required primary resistance for kit 00089. Is there any advantage from using the Boyer coils in anyone's experience?

Also, can anyone recommend a supplier, as the Boyer site links only to 2 U.K. Distributors but they don't list the Honda kits on their web sites

Sorry if I am asking what has been asked many times before.

Nice sunny day out at this small event, free to go and just rock up when you want.

Here's a pic of my four trying to be a Royal Enfield.

Lover the Landy Defender "Lion" corner and the mini ice cream van (very welcome !!).

Interested in the Honda BOSS NC25 (believe these were a grey import) - sadly didn't track down the owner.

Nice little show and worth turning up next year if your are reasonably local.
