Going to look a couple of CB 550s this month, both are from 1977. Are there any specific things to check for on a CB550 and are there any specific problems on the 77 model.

Depends if you are looking at a original bike or a project ? Is it a usa import ?
Make sure that it starts on the first kick or touch of the button from cold, if it smokes on start up, if there is any chain clunking from the bottom end or rattles, all electrics work fine. Make sure that there is no liner in the tank. And so on ;)

Is it / are they CB550/4 K's or CB550/4 F's ?

They are both K's and US imports.

77k have horrible pd carbs and are the least loved 550 plus most difficult cycle spares to get

Most important things are how much of a project do you want and how much are you prepared to spend. These bikes are all old and any can have issues, original bikes, customised, USA or UK models makes no difference whatsoever. They all rattle at idle but should reduce as soon as the revs rise a little. Avoid any smokers ideally, or really excessively noisy, but again depends on how much you’re spending and how much work you’re prepared to do. Are they mot’d runners or projects?.... If you dont know what to look for to avoid a real lemon, try to take somebody who does, thats the only real sensible advice.. Good luck, a nice 550 is a great bike!
