Hi I am in the middle of re building a 550f2 ? 1977 usa import came with 500 k? engine fitted have removed engine stripped engine looks to be very good internally oa standard bore all in spec i have de glazed bores unbelievable condition.
wiring loom poor but have very good replacement,Is the wiring on 500 same as 550f? ::)
-
No, 550 had a safety inlock system so you couldnt start it in gear unless you pulled the clutch lever in, 3 active fuse fuse box and ignition switch between clocks i think
-
Ah that may explain why it looked as though it had been hot wired. the replacement harness is the same as one fitted is there away round this everything on running gear, frame is cb 550f ?
-
Why has your 550f2 got a 500k engine fitted🤔
-
us import came this way at the time i had 3 other cb 550fs but this was cheap? :D
-
You mean you got it that way, they never came from the factory with a 550 frame with a 500 engine. The 500 engines had finished years before the 550 came out, even in USA.
-
yes i realise that it is not original but it came that way all the plug ins fit surely this has been done before. I have just looked at engine no ending 500E is the engine an f dont know year, excuse my ignorance.
-
sorry i bought it as is lol ;D :D :D

The engine is a 500 from a 500 four, or 500 K0, K1 or K2. If you let us know the engine number, Bryanj on the forum will be able to give you an approximate build date for the engine. What is your VIN number, that will give a clue to when the frame was manufactured.

Don't be sorry, nothing wrong with a Mongrel as long as you knew it was a Mongrel when you bought it.
-
yes i knew thank you is it ok to post engine and frame no on here?

Yes, plenty of people do. You can leave off the last 2 numbers of both and just put a star in their place if you wish.

cb500E2028001 engine ,cb550f 2105260 frame

So your engine is a CB500 K1
And your frame a CB550 F3 (sorry, I typed K4 previously)
The E and the F after the numbers just mean Engine and Frame.

thanks for that info much appreciated :)

No problem, at least now you know for sure which models to order parts for both the frame and engine.
-
I should have added for anyone else that may look at this thread in the future, these engine and frame numbers relate to USA models ONLY. They have no bearing whatsoever with original UK model bikes as we have totally different models with totally different engine and frame numbers.

I have swapped and changed cb500 and 550 motors about between bikes with relative impunity regards electricals. No issues I can recall. Carbs can be a pitfall to swap about if you dont like jetting but that's part of living with a bitsa bike, seems restoration to original has similar issues.

Cheers I have already stripped cleaned re jetted bigger set float heights. will decide later on final jetting new exhaust req
no real plan with this one. resprayed tank as a change from mechanical work, also restoring cb 72 super hawk so plenty to do ;)
