I was under the impression that there was a Moulton around Shepton Mallet, must have been mistaken.

CB500/550 / Re: How do I detect camchain wear?
« on: October 27, 2022, 03:00:52 PM »
I've found Ted that whilst it's standard to replace the chain whilst the engines apart it's the tensioner which could be the real problem, I've got quite a few of them now and most show some sort of damage, most common is having the tensioner actually bent out of shape, very common to see the bottom section well out of line with the top and normally bent inwards. Also damage to the cups where the damper rubbers go, gets damaged by the primary chain if it's very worn. All these stop the tensioner working correctly.

TBH you don't tend to notice it until you have 2 or 3 side by side and you can see the difference in the shapes.

Gerben does the carbs, however he does seem to do them on an exchange basis and it's been known for him to send carbs which don't suit the bike, for instance a set of European carbs with smaller jets for a UK bike, getting them to run without the airbox snorkel is difficult.

The small metal figure 8 pieces between the vac adjusters is normal, I'd leave them on.

Clearly the carbs haven't been set up right, there is a knack to it but if it's beyond your skill set I'd get someone else to do it, Bryan isn't that far from you in Gloucester so maybe he'd be interested.

Reason for the pic Gary?

Ones a 550 rear brake plate and the other (right) is a 500 one.

I'd be interested in the sprocket chain plates if they are for sale.

The bearing retainer looks past it, I'd throw that away if it was me.

Need more info, does the engine stops but the lights etc stay on? Just an engine stop could mean the kill switch contacts, full shut down is most likely an ignition switch fault

Could be that's the problem, could be a spring under that which has rusted away and not forcing the T cup up enough for it to close the throttle riser.

Were all the little black rods fitted Bill, they slide inside the springs and are cupped on the ends to match the ball on the lifter arm. If those are missing the spring pressure would be reduced and allow it to remain raised.

There should be 3 in each lifter arm fitting.

You can see them in number 96 grouping.

Misc / Open / Re: NE gasket set, do I need thicker o-rings?
« on: October 26, 2022, 10:05:40 AM »
Just measured the head gasket thickness.

Genuine gasket out of top end set, difficult to measure as Honda put some sort of sticky layer around the hole and it has the effect of sort of bubbling the surface a little but 1.4mm is my best measurement.

My aftermarket kits were both NP ones, Royal Industries NP18004 to be exact. the kits were mixed together but 2 head and 2 base gaskets along with 2 sets of Orings etc, only one of which included the ones for the head oil gallery in question, no sticky layer around the opening, unlike the Honda one but both measured around 1.4mm as well. If anything I'd say they were slightly thicker than OE as they did measure thicker at times, both measured 1.5mm depending on how you read the micrometer.

All the kits were from the 80s maybe even earlier, late 70s maybe.

CB500/550 / Re: Stainless Steel 500 wheel & engine spacers
« on: October 26, 2022, 09:52:42 AM »
Got the address now Steve, cheers.

I found the sprocket side spacer, forgotten I'd had it hard chromed along with the spindle and it was still on the rear wheel spindle where I left it, logical really.

It's 32mm length, 20mm bore, 38mm wide at largest point but steps down to 34mm, the step is 8mm. Has a very slight chamfer on the smaller end where it goes through the oil seal. About 1.5mm of chamfer.

Site Feedback / FAQ / How to... / We lost another section of time?
« on: October 25, 2022, 05:57:34 PM »
My PM from another member was there earlier today, went back to look at it for his address and it's gone, I didn't delete it and the last time something like this happened it was because an earlier version of the forum was loaded on top of the latest version for some reason.

Any ideas?

Not sure what's happened Max but I got your PM with the address, just gone back to the message box so I can address the envelope and it's gone. It's like Steve has reverted to an earlier version of the forum and lost everything that was posted after a certain time. Can you send it again please.

You need to buy 2 shells for each journal, so 10 main bearing shells and 8 big end or conrod shells and you need to order the correct colour dependent on your crankcase and crankshaft sizes. How to ascertain those sizes is well documented on the forum, just search.
