Put together the attached chart while looking for brake parts for my 1976 CB750F1, as there are some parts that are interchangable with the K series bikes.

Luckily no floods in this part of the UK (North West) so far ! But the rain has been terrible, and every time we have heavy rain my garage floods, only a couple of inches but once it is in it's difficult to shift as the garage floor slopes down at the bench end which is the same level as the garden behind it. Got really fed up with this so this week I installed a rain water channel that I bought from eBay, hopefully it will work !

CB750 / No excuses now

Well this morning I went to Warrington to pick up my newly rebuilt wheels, boy do they look different, I am well pleased with them, then this afternoon my new front tyre arrived (410.19 TT100), so no more excuses I will have to crack on with the rebuild.
I also now have  my new front brake braided lines, after a lot of confusion looking at Goodridge, HEL and others I contacted John at CMS-HEL-UK (eBay) and sent him my old lines, he made up two new lines for me so I could get rid of the piping part, they are black sheathed so they should blend in well.

Hi biffta, long time no hear, yes SAMCR750 put me in touch with Bill in Warrington, he was also recommended by the guys at Elite Engineering, so hopefully they will come back all shiny.

Well all covers repaired, rubbed down, undercoated with Halfords plastic primer, 2 coats of Ford Graphite Grey, one coat of clear, still one coat of clear to go so they look a bit orange peel ish, but I'm happy with the finish so far.

Well,
The wheels are off being rebuilt, the braided hoses for the front brake are being made up. so I though I ought to look at the side covers. The original LH side cover is cracked, the RH cover is in good shape. To cover all bets I bought a pattern LH cover, this has been drilled (for the emblem) and both it and the RH cover have been primed.
I have fibre glassed inside the original LH cover to strengthen it, the next job will be to fill and smooth the external crack, no problem there as I am used to making seams disapear on my model kits, but I nearly forgot to drill a hole at the end of the crack.
The spare LH cover that I got on eBay is not in too bad condition except for a badly cracked maroon paint finish (or so I though !), so starting with 280 grit wet and dry I started to sand it, 3 hours latter and down to 80 grit I have discovered the original Honda Phantom black, a grey primer, a blue coat, a white coat, a red coat, and the previously mention maroon coat ! Will start again tomorrow !
While I had the original paint exposed I matched it at Halfords, Ford Graphite grey is very close, will see what it turns out like.

Hi Asimo, no floods here though the way it is raining there could be !
Yes I have a soft spot for BSA's, started on a D7 Bantam and eventually progressed to my A65R, went everywhere on that thing. Lots of things used to fall off though, horn, exhausts, and one day even the carb, single monobloc in those days. The big ends went on me hammering down Sulby straight in the IOM, had to rebuild it on the campsite, luckily I got to know a sidecar rider who used A65 engines so he helped a lot with knowledge about local engineering firms. It eventually ended up with a Lightning cam, pistons, head and twin concentrics. It's been sitting in my garage since 1986, but all the nice bits are in the loft, so one day I should get to it.
Pic is me and the A65 at Union Mills during the 1970 TT week

Hi Jack,
I still do not know the set up of your bike but I would not become fixated on one thing if I was you, main jets do not really wear out, they do get dirty though. I would approach the problem logically, if the bike runs fine at low and medium speeds it could be a couple of things:
Retarded timing, not enough fuel flow, not enough air flow, spring to mind.
Ignition timing, check points gap, check timing, check advance and retard unit works correctly.
Carbs, check air filter, check fuel flow, from the tank to the carbs, check the fuel tap, fuel lines, breather on the tank, float valves, note that on the F1 these have filters, float height, check all jets are clean. Check jet sizes are correct and the needle is in the middle position.
Check valve clearances.
Check cam chain tension.
Check plugs and leads/caps, the CB750 HT leads tended to short out where they come out of the coils in wet weather.

Yes the red suit was great but for rallies the serious stuff came out, PVC chemical proof suit, a lot heavier and more waterproof. When I checked RCM out and saw it had not been taxed for so long I assumed it was dead, I wonder just how many bikes there are out there in peoples gardens, garages and sheds ?

You may have problems removing the motor with the carbs attached, the other alternative would be to either try a hair drier or cut the rubbers if you are going to renew then anyway.

Hi Jack,
When I was riding my 76 F1 regularly it had no great problems hitting an indicated 125 mph.
Your bike should not really be starting without choke, what is the state of your air filter, have you a standard airbox set up ?
The F1 carbs should have a 105 main jet, 40 slow jet, and the pilot air screw should be approx 1 turn out.
The carbs work on three basic setting at different throttle openings, see attached diagram which I got from another site.
You should check your ignition timing closely, is the advance unit free and not siezed up.

Hi Andrew,
Steve is correct, when the carb rubbers are new all it takes is to push down and back on the carbs and they will fall off. But with old stiff rubbers it gets to be more difficult. Presumably you have completely removed the airbox and slackened (or removed) the hose clips on the rubbers nearest the cylinder head ? This is for a CB750, not sure about others.
I have just replaced the carb rubbers on my 76 CB750F1 and the difference is amazing.

Hi Jack,
Would say that there is something mighty wrong if your bike is that slow, would do a complete service on it if I was you, check the points, timing, valve clearances, cam chain adjustment, carb settings, air filter, basically everything. I got a very good F2 manual from David Silver spares, it is not a general CB750 manual, it is a dedicated CB750F2 manual, give them a call.

Hi Jack,
If you haven't got around to the map yet I live on the Wirral, unfortunately as I am very slow and carefull these days (and skint) it looks like my rebuild will miss the summer this year.

Sounds like you liked to play around with your bike as well as I did, when I bought the K1 it had a dented tank so I filled it and sprayed a white undercoat ready for the gold, it looked that good that I changed my mind and sprayed it white. See pic of a cold and wet day in the 1970's.
Unfortunately a vehicle search would indicate that my old bike is dead.
Then came the 900cc kit, Koni's, steering damper, clip ons, 4-1, and 410.19 and 425.18 TT100's, great fun. But now I am doing the opposite and returning my F1 to stock, off has come the headlamp brackets, fork brace and most of the F2 bits, apart from the tank and seat which I will keep black.

Cheers
