Not knocking Gary but those are not candy colours and for candy colours you really need a painter that has experience in applying that type of paint. Gary may have that or he may not, can’t say but it must be said nevertheless

My last way of doing this was single braided line down to the splitter box in the bottom yoke and 2 braided lines from there direct to the caliper. This did away with the rigid line altogether. These were made by Goodridge back in the 70s. Due to them not using stainless steel fittings in that era they rusted badly when in storage so they aren’t really reusable. This time I went to HEL as I’ve used them before and there service is great, slightly different setup this time, still single braided line from mc to bottom yoke, then 2 braided to the hard lines and hard lines into the caliper. Explain to whoever makes them that you want an extra bottom line due to the twin calipers and that should solve you having to measure anything as the lengths are well known by now.

I'm unsure as yet what I'll be having done with my crankcases, I may do the same Ted (I also have the same AEG oven BTW) I may do that but I'm thinking of maybe putting a matt lacquer over the top which is petrol resistant, not 100% sure what would happen if that silver gets petrol on it. All you need is a carb overflow or a leak from a float bowl and if it all lifts it's an expensive fix.

You are correct Ted, that’s the exact way the shells go. You are also correct in thinking you can go up a colour and still be ok, if you can’t get yellow get green, blacks are basically the only colour shell that you can use anywhere so long as you run it in very carefully. At times when the markings weren’t visible blacks were used as you were sure to at least have no undersized shells. It’s also why they were the first colour to become hard to nearly impossible to find. Personally I’d be unwilling to say fit blacks in any crankcase opening marked with an A, as that’s the smallest one possible and you’re fitting the biggest size possible, ok in a B and advisable in a C marking.

I have quite possibly the most black shells in one place, at least enough for 5-6 complete engines, around 58 at the last count. Might even be more now, not counted them for a while.

Well in that case you're not going to need any blacks. B is Green or Brown and A is Yellow or Green. If the numbers on the crank are 1 then for the B it's Green and for the A it's yellow, if they are 2 then it's Brown for the B and Green for the A. Pretty simple. If you need any yellow crank shells let me know, they are unobtainable now but I still have a few left.

Still plenty of Greens around but Browns getting scarce, no Yellows or Blacks.

Just wait until the new crank lands Ted, if the codes are easily readable you've got a starting point at least.

DS must do so many engine breakdowns I'd doubt they'd even remember what engine it came out of.

What are the crankcase markings BTW, the letters will at least give you some idea of the colour of the shell required. An A for example means either a Yellow or a Green, whilst a C means Black or Brown.

Good old DK's. You can buy off them with confidence as they will take it back and refund you if your not happy with it. It will cost you two way postage though, and you wont be sending it back for £7.95p. Besides that, your probably too late as Oddjob will have snatched it by now. ;D

Hey, no need for that.

I have 2 spare cranks as it happens but it's postage which will kill it or I'd have offered one.

No kick starter.

Wash the crank with petrol or something that dissolves the oil film. As it dries you stand the best chance of seeing the codes then. Don’t forget it’s letter-number, so as the letters are on the crankcasing at the back it’s the number you need for the mains, that means you need the letter off the crank and the number off the rod to work out the bearing. The letters on the rods should all be the same as it’s the weight code so the crank is balanced.

Mate of mine had a Garelli Record, fast little bugger it was, the rest had Puch VS50. I never had a moped as I was riding proper bikes at 16, the last year you could do so (1971) before they upped the age to 17.

I've also got that key number Steve. I was hoping you were going to say it was surplus but no such luck.

I can nick your bike now Steve but you can't nick mine as it has 2 ignition locks fitted  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyone who has one of the above, can you let me know the dimensions of the chain adjuster stoppers.. The ones that slide into the back of the swinging arm.

Need to know how thick they are, top to bottom measurement, how wide is the bit that slides into the swinging arm, bolt hole size etc.

Thanks.

I always spray the undersides of my tanks with Zinc182, if the paint is visible I overspray it satin black. I do this with every part I feel isn’t protected properly, insides of fork ears including the back of the ear itself, inside of handlebars, underside of rear mudguard etc. I’ve found doing this has extended the life of these parts. Cost of parts these days you need to ensure they last as long as possible. I intend to try and do the inside of the swinging arm this time, picked one up the other day and you could hear rust rattling around inside it, cleared the air holes at the back and the amount of rust particles that came out was amazing.

On my last set of exhausts I did the reverse side of them as that’s where the rust starts, found 2 of them in the shed last year, been there for over 40 years, in a damp environment as well, cleaned off the zinc spray and the metal was perfect underneath. They are still in excellent condition and I may end up selling them on eBay.
