I had this problem with one of my batteries and I took it along to a local car electricians and they put it on their 'industrial' battery booster which kick started it charging again.

I'm afraid that the only answer is to do it all again on a pre-73 model...
Sounds like a plan to me Steve.

Nice job, and a lot of work there.
I like that close in view with the rear brake lever at bottom of frame and looking down the bellmouths.
Shame we have to put those big number plates on UK bikes.
I like that shot too, my favourite I think. It is a shame about the plates, this is the smallest legal number plate I could do. It is the standard font but the plate has been trimmed to 10mm from the letters/numbers which is the legal minimum. I would love to get a black/silver number plate, but alas do not want to get into trouble with the Police as I am a Driving Instructor and the Authorities take a dim view of us doing things wrong.

I watched the show and was very glad that he restored a CB550 but I actually didn't like the bloke presenting it very much.

My CB550K3 has the 2 wires for the clutch, so I would say it is the same.

Just thought I would share this just in case anyone in the future has the same problem.
After deep cleaning my carbs and rejetting, bench syncing etc etc. I found that I had a problem with the choke not working correctly (even after buying a new choke cable). They butterflies just wouldn't close properly, felt really stiff and sometimes wouldn't close at all.
To overcome this problem, I put the choke on (butterflies closed), then I loosened (1/2-1 turn) off the screws holding the butterflies to their shaft so they all seated correctly in the place they were supposed to be when the choke was on and then tightened them back up again.
This resulted in a really nice choke, which works every time and has a smooth feel.

My opinion is that although balancing makes a difference (mostly to slow running/tickover) it's quite alot street theatre for which people have consented to be charged money for.
If the carbs are set-up well on a bench i.e. so that all the slides really do start to open together, then they are usually very close to being ideal with any obvious problems down to other factors like points/timing/valve clearance etc. This is why all the advice points you to verify those first before carb balancing.
If you don't have any guages then you are not missing much if your general set-up work is accurate .
I agree with K2-K6, I bench synced my carbs recently and when I connected up my carb balancer, they were all pretty much identical.

Hope the loom helped!
It certainly did, running fine and strong because of it.

Thanks guys, had a look and found it easy to remove.
I just didn't want to go in all guns blazing and screw something up.

I have a 1978 CB550K3 with Kehin PD46C carburettors, I need to change the main jets, but I cannot see how to change them.
When I remove the main jets they are attached (very well indeed) to the emulsion tubes, my Haynes manual carb diagram show that they are pressed together with an O ring, now this must be a bloody good fit as I cannot see a join.
Am I (well my manual) correct and that they need separating or am I missing something simple?
