How do you check to know if your alternator is working on a 550F

Cheers

CB350/400 / Re: Video rebuild
« on: October 20, 2019, 04:08:13 PM »
I am so glad that I have read this thread first. I have been watching this chaps video a few times to learn about stripping and building a 400/4 engine. I have never built an engine in my life as I am a joinery manufacturer but I want to learn as I have many projects here to play with. I am just in the process in building a new shed in the back garden to have as a man cave and to play with my bikes in the evening instead of sitting indoors watching the boss of the house soaps.
In the New Year I was going to strip and build the 400 but I would love to see a video showing me how to do it correctly, if I hadn't seen this thread I would have defiantly put oil under the shells and probably made a mistake on the torque settings.
I am a complete novice so am I expecting too much of myself or should I do an SS50 engine first as I have got five of them here. Lol

I think the pictures makes the rust look worst than it is, but is diesel ok to use or should I be using other chemicals?  :-\
Oh yes, photos do make rust look pretty horrific, I forgot about that 😀 If you think they are salvageble, a good soak in diesel and a scrub with a brush will be fine. Don't wash the diesel off after cleaning as it will leave a nice film of oil as protection. Then just bag up.

Cheers Julie, I shall give it a go and see what happens.  ;D

Afternoon all,

I have been given quite a few boxes of 400/4 engine parts, the chap had stripped down about 3 engines. A lot of the parts has got slight surface rust. My question is what is the best method in cleaning them up, I am cautious in using abrasives as being machined engine parts. My thought was too soak them in diesel then use a old tooth brush, degrease them to wash off the diesel. Then give the a light spray of oil and bag up in poly bags.

I would really like to know what you experts suggest.

Cheers Dave

Mmmm, if it's knocking, its letting you know it's time, if not overdue, for a new chain. It will only get worse and may cause damage internally. But, I quite understand what you're saying, if you're not mechanically minded it will seem a daunting task.

I am trying to become mechanically minded, I am thinking of rebuilding the 400/4 engine, I have been reading your thread. Perhaps I will give the 550 a go if successful with the 400. ;D

Cheers Julie, I had my old schoolmate Trevor Stafford who owns Allbikes in Folkestone, Kent service and sync the carbs, still came back noisy. That when he told me it is the Hyvo chain.

Oddjob, alas I have very limited engine knowledge, so probably just put up with the knocking  :'( :'( :'(

Hi all,
How bigger job is it to replace a hyvo chain on a 550K3, I am so fed up with the knocking noise on tick over. :(

Just a quick update, it was the solenoid. Replaced it with a cheap one off fleabay, so probably won't last long.  :)

Is the starter motor on the 550K3 same as a 400/4?

Yes Julie, she starts on the kick start.

Electric start was working then suddenly stopped like it was a flat battery.
