Never seen both a Kombi and Rolls Royce referred in the same discussion 😂.

My dad bought a Princess - new. Got it home, the boot lock had fallen out, necessitating a new lock / different key. A month later the suspension mounts unglued themselves - back to the dealer much longer. Maybe this due a vibration - the tyres had flats baked into them. A year later the bronze paint had a green copper hue about it. And there was more.
I hardly ever saw my dad cross; my mum had a Datsun Cherry which just ‘went’ - he obviously laboured this fact to Michael Edwardes in a letter …. which had little use. Red Robby probably got to it first & tore it up.

Try here - section 13, noting that’s it predominantly refers US Hondas. Also, there may be further info in other sections - it’s a large document.

If not run for 2+ weeks, the K2 will fire up on the button (full choke), but then quickly die - no amount of nursing it on the throttle will work. It’s as though the ignition has failed - which I am 99.9% certain isn’t the case. Typically after 3 or 4 similar such cycles we’ll be successful and get on the road.

Everything about this K2 has been fully restored in the last year, but tbh it did this occasionally before the major overhaul. Once running, the bike runs faultlessly.

Engine totally stock, carb settings by the book, plugs look OK. Boyer Electronic IGN, DR8-ESL plugs. (with resistive caps as unable to source non-resistor plugs). Basically, the bike is as showroom new in every aspect.

Thanks Ted / Nige - problem now solved.

About 3 yrs ago I upgraded the brakes from 4x drums to 2x disc + 2 rear drums. This conversion specifically requires a split system M/C; whose 2 outputs are each tailored to the disc & drum circuits.
And I bloody plumbed them the wrong way around. Doh!

So now, with either Front or rear fluid loss, the pedal goes 80% travel before hardening up. Still gonna be heart stopping I guess… as Ted described.

(the split M/C common to both the Beetle and the Split Screen Kombi for this conversion. Except in the Beetle the primary piston is aft, and in the Kombi - forward. So, whilst I can’t particularly remember, I’m guessing I used Beetle write ups for the instal)

Cunning, Ash; nice job, esp that an old instrument gets saved.
I’ve an assortment of these bootlaces, and rarely use ‘em as intended - not that I’d have figured your great fix. They make neat swaged ends for SS cables, or ‘protection’ around such where a grub screw anchors said cable. (Kombi chews accel cables - horrible job, … change it annually to save roadside dramas)

Hi Dave.

Having done a full resto last year on my ‘750 K2 I was too faced with this problem. I’m no longer in the UK (ie Oz), but quickly learned that commercially / small plating amounts was a problem - so much so that I was essentially forced into doing my own Zinc platings. Did I enjoy it - nope. An awful lot of prep and fussing. Cheap? Erm, reasonable. Results? - fine, but only with great prep and a quality kit.
So - it all got done, to an acceptable quality, and included such refinements as gold passivating.
Not advocating home plating; but saying it’s certainly doable if you’ve the inclination.

Thanks gents, though still confused. Front discs, rear shoes adjusted, system fully bled & good braking occurs within 1” of pedal movement.
Now, open a brake bleed nipple, and the pedal goes to the floor with little effort (and that slave cylinder obviously ‘bleeds’)

And there’s my confusion… I’d expect appears the ‘other’ circuit of the split system to retain some pedal pressure / stop it going full travel to the floor.

Your last para Ted perhaps addresses it, and suggests the Carlton system was split F/R is opposed to diagonal opposites… given your estimate of 75% loss and no mention of steering upset?

Bit naughty as non SOHC - forgive me.

Changed out a rear brake line (old Kombi) recently and upon bleeding the brake thought, “bloody hell, how come the pedal goes effortlessly to the floor during this process… as the system is (supposedly) split”

What am I missing pls? The Master cylinder has divided / isolated reservoirs, with each feeding a separate circuit via a common piston / cylinder mechanism - ie front & rear. It seems to me, should a line rupture occur anywhere, all braking will be lost.

Scratching my head …. and expecting to be embarrassed!

Never considered shaking it Ted, but tbh drained both bottles and those colours constant in each, and no residues remaining. I’ve used this oil for 5 years now, and up until now it’s been the amber colour irrespective of length on my shelf. Interesting…

Changing gear box oil today (car) and using last of year old bottle, followed by new bottle - both same manufacturer / type / spec. The new bottle however, almost clear in colour versus the older bottle @ amber. Notably both labellings identical, and state the colour as ‘Amber’
Both feel ‘slippery’ to the touch for sure.
Anything of concern here pls? Ta.

Unsure 550, but when Bob painted up me he mentioned the flakes got ‘bigger’ with the years; I opted for larger flakes than the 1972 FSO.

The finish is indeed beautiful; the pics just can’t do it justice.

After last year’s K2 renovation, I had a spare tank left over - a bit shabby - which I planned to sell. Lately though I’ve discovered a painter here in Brisbane (a Geordie gent as it happens), and Bob prepped and resprayed said tank + 2 new panels in Flake Sunrise Orange. A beautiful job; plan to swap colours at each major service.

… just outta interest Ash had it all apart today, and found no sign of solid debris within. The cup certainly dragged on the magnet, but in a fluid sort of way, ie my gut feeling was congealed oil or suchlike. Wasn’t too keen on a major strip down @ this early stage, and so simply flooded the cup with WD40 and span it up with a battery drill to mid-range for a couple of mins. All seemed freed up & ok now - so reassembled & back on the bike.

It sure was a delight opening it up / resealing versus the 400F & 750K2 crimp rings…

Spare plug? ….. having changed one roadside last week. The best thing you can surely do is to give the bike a really thorough service / inspection < you depart.

Designing a toolkit by committee suggests you may need a support van 😂.

On the assumption of a shared earth (ie unmolested rear lamp unit) does the brake light work normally? If so, the earth is indeed ok.

When you checked the tail light with a battery, are you certain you checked the tail filament, and not the brake filament - assuming you’ve the standard double filament bulb (so sorry if stating the obvious!).

Sometimes the bulb connections can fail; emery / clean up the body earths and pin connections of both the bulb and bulb holder.

A continuity check using a meter may not give the full story, as it uses an extremely low current for this function. This low current will happily flow through furry / corroded connections … which may not subsequently carry the current needed to operate the tail lamp.

Does the bike have a front parking light (2nd position on the key) - and does this work? If yes & no, then perhaps a fault in the ignition switch?

From what you describe, the handlebar switch sounds ok on the assumption the headlight works, but spraying switch cleaner into its slot wouldn’t go amiss.

Before going too deep, perhaps look in the headlamp bowl, hoping to find a disconnected Brown wire? Good luck….
