CB750 / Re: Was this cheap?
« on: April 06, 2022, 02:56:12 PM »
That looks great value, perhaps coming soon to an ebay listing near you at a much higher price..........

That said it's done one mile since 2006 (probably a push mile), and nowhere does it say it actually runs, or even turns over. "a rare machine that will require recommissioning" could cover a multitude of sins. There was also a ridiculously cheap DBD34 Gold Star (sold for £5,500), that was taken off the road years ago with 'engine issues'. I don't suppose you can take them apart for a look inside until you've actually bought it. As with almost all barn finds, before you can restore anything you first have to find and fix the issue that was beyond the capabilities of the previous owner when they took it off the road years ago. Been there, done that.

If only I had more garage space, though, something like one of these could be an excellent next project.

Misc / Open / Re: Daft fuel prices locally
« on: March 22, 2022, 12:33:20 PM »
When the World Cup was on, some journalist (with nothing better to do) worked out the decrease in mpg caused by the drag from an Engerland flag on a car roof, times the number of cars carrying one (or two), times the average miles traveled over the tournament.

The result was a staggering amount of fuel being used to lug all those flags around.

Similar with full tanks. I always fill the bikes because the range is limited anyway, in the car it depends on how well off I'm feeling, I'm more likely to fill up if I'm at a (relatively) cheap supermarket.

Edited to add: While we're on the subject of fuel, I've read that the reason both Red Bull cars retired at the end of Sunday's Grand Prix is suspected to be cavitation in the fuel pump and fuel lines caused by the compulsory 10% sustainable ethanol element in the fuel starting to evaporate in the heat after it was sloshing around in a nearly empty tank.

Sorry to bring agricultural products into this, but both Hondas I've rebuilt in recent years had the crankcase joints done with a thin coat of Harley-Davidson High-Performance Sealant, left over from rebuilding my blown up Sportster.

Having seen it mentioned in two consecutive posts, there will be young people out there wondering what or who the hell was Heath-Robinson?

Lovely build as expected, most of us don't have a load of NOS parts stashed away for future use, especially a genuine exhaust set, or a Police speedo for that matter.

« on: March 01, 2022, 11:15:35 PM »
I got wrapped up in reading this so much that I got a bollocking from the Mrs, apparently we were meant to be going somewhere.

I was interested from two perspectives - firstly when I bought my Z1 I watched the official movie of the record breaking at Daytona (it’s on YouTube).

Secondly, the CB750 K0 I bought from Sports Motorcycles had a Yoshimura cam and exhaust. Maybe there was more, I never had the engine apart, but I got a receipt for the cam with the bike, and the logo was on a plate fixed to the so called silencer. My Mum reckoned she could here me coming ages before I actually showed up. I reluctantly got rid after getting pulled by plod more often than was healthy for my license, I don’t think the noise could have helped.

As well as Classic Hondas, air cooled 911’s rock, so it’s not just me then.

Welcome! We can look forward to the fun of sorting out which colour shells you will need for your crank together.

'Knock knock'

'Who's there?'

'Grandad!'

'STOP THE FUNERAL!!!!'

Humour / Barry Cryer RIP
« on: January 27, 2022, 02:42:12 PM »
I was just listening to a tribute on Radio 4 to Barry Cryer, who has just passed away. At one time, if you laughed at a joke on TV, he probably wrote it.

A couple of people interviewed were asked what their favourite joke of his was:

1) A man is shaving in the bathroom, his wife walks in wearing her new dress, and asks 'Does my bum look big in this?'

He says 'Yes, but to be fair, it is a small bathroom.'

2) A woman is walking past a pet shop, when she sees a lovely parrot in the window, with a £5 price tag on the cage. She goes in and asks why it is so cheap. The pet shop owner explained that it came from a brothel, so has a rather fruity vocabulary. She decided that as it is so cheap, she'll take it anyway.

She takes it home, and takes the cover off the cage. The parrot looks around, and says 'New curtains, new place, lovely!'

Her daughters come home, the parrot says 'New girls, new place, lovely!'

Her husband comes home, the parrot says 'Hello Keith!'

 ;D ;D

Tricks & Tips / Re: Consensus on home plating.
« on: January 25, 2022, 04:05:45 PM »
On the several bikes I've restored over the years the one area I've never been happy with is carb linkages, I've always ended up carefully painting parts silver, while looking in envy at bikes where everything has been apart and plated like new - it's one of the first things I look at! (sad I know).

When I've had parts chrome and zinc plated one thing I always come up against is a minimum job cost from platers (£45 + VAT the last one I asked) - I can understand why they don't want to bother with 10p to plate a screw or something, so I am quite interested in DIY plating next time I do a bike. It must be quite satisfying to watch a part slowly become shiny and new looking again.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Tips sought for finishing the Cover, Dynamo

I find laquer is all fine and dandy when it's brand new, once you get stone chips etc it starts to fester and craze under the laquer, just like new bikes did did back in the day. So no, I don't bother, but keep on top of it if it starts to go spotty, don't put the bike away without washing it if it gets wet, especially if the dreaded road salt is around.

I roughly mask around the area where the black needs to go, and spray it all with Simonize satin black. I let it partially dry, then carefully wipe off the letters and edges with a cloth damp with thinners or brake cleaner. here's my CL450 cover, though I had to repolish it before I was happy.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished, as I've only ever seen old photos of the P2.

Interesting that it came from Saudi, I remember seeing a bunch of nearly new white Triumph T160s in Sports Motorcycles. Apparently they had been sold to Saudi Arabia as Police bikes, but being Triumphs had sadly ground to an inevitable halt and had been left wherever they broke down. The prospect of having your hands chopped off for the theft of police property may have helped prevent them from being pilfered at the roadside. Being such a dry climate, they were worth saving, and had been brought back to the UK (I don't know who by) and recommissioned by Triumph.

Maybe yours has also had a long sleep in a hot desert.

CB500/550 / Re: Electronic ignition
« on: January 11, 2022, 10:04:00 PM »
I can only fix what I can understand, when I’ve had electronic ignition fail on me then replacement, not repair is the only option. I do understand points ignition though, so emergency repair is possible.

On the other hand, I’ve spent many an hour fiddling with points gaps and timing, fit and forget is wonderful- my Sportster and 911 both have magnetic triggers for the ignition on their flywheels that require zero attention ever.

Other Bikes / Re: Z1 as a project?
« on: January 07, 2022, 01:07:50 PM »
A quick update. the bike hasn't been anywhere for a few weeks, there is salt on the roads, and it's blocked in by my 911, which kas been having an alternator repair / fan refurb. This needs doing again as there is a spacer missing and the fan is binding. Not good in an air cooled car!

Back in September I took her down to the local BMPS annual show, a few years ago my CB750 won Best Japanese Bike there, the Kawasaki went one better and won 'Best in Show'!  :D I'm now retiring her from shows, while I have a 100% record - entered one, won one.

After my teething troubles got sorted, I did another 500 miles and she now runs perfectly. My only concern is that, being well fast despite her age, when I open her up and actually hit the throttle stops, things quickly get scary. maybe it's just me getting old, but maybe it's just because that's how Kawasakis are - my only ride on a 500 H1 two stroke triple nearly ended in disaster with the bike vertical when I hit the power band with W.O.T.

However the garage is now full, and there is no room for a 'next project', so something needs to go. The HD is kept for holiday use, the CL450 is my runaround and the one bike I may keep forever, so the Z1A may be the one that goes. Plus the funds will see right for the next project, I enjoy putting bikes back on the road again, more than I actually need another one. I'm not sure what comes next, only nothing I have to kickstart, I'm through doing that.

PM me if you are interested, however it will be suitably uncheap. However, if I still have her for the Crich show in the summer, I'll stick her in the Z1OC anniversary lineup.
