CB750 / Truing wheels, tyre selection and balancing
« on: May 27, 2018, 11:14:27 AM »
Looking at sorting a set of K6 wheels out, currently they are sat in the garage stripped down with no bearings in (hub spikes and rim are still assembled). End goal is to have them powdercoater Black.

My plan of action is to remove the old tyres, purchase new tyres, stick the new bearings in, get the naked wheel trued, fit new tyres, balance wheels, mark position of new tyres, remove tyres and bearings, get wheels  powdercoated as a single piece, refit tyres as per reference marks.

I understand a ‘better’ option would be to get the wheels relaced with black spokes and get just the hub and rims powdercoated but this is a lot more expensive and for something that’s only going to get light use I don’t think I’ll be adjusting spokes any time soon anyway.

Does this sequence of events seem about right? To get the wheels trued/balanced  how assembled do they need to be.. e.g discs sprockets cushdrive fitted etc

Finally what are some common tyre choices? I’m after something that look a little knobbly but not so much they will handle like a custard filled condom.. I like the Firestone ANS a lot but the price is rediculuous.

What’s out there that’s similar for a more realistic price? Best I've seen so far is the Dunlop K70

Misc / Open / Trail bikes
« on: May 13, 2018, 04:16:27 PM »
Spent the weekend doing trails on an old Honda CRM 250 and a new KTM 350 enduro, had an absolute blast.

I’m interested in getting something road legal (day MOT would do) that I can use around the countryside on and off road. I’ve been offered an old Yamaha Xt225 but I think I’ll find it a bit small (I’m 6’ and 100kg).

Anyone here into this kind of stuff? What cheap old bikes are out there still going strong worth looking at?

Misc / Open / Seat foam
« on: December 30, 2017, 09:41:21 PM »
I need to source some foam for a metal seat pan, been recommended I use closed cell foam to avoid t going mouldy but beyond that I’ve no ideas

I’ve heard of people using yoga mats but that seams a bit too cheapskate and can’t inagine it would be much good. Does anyone know where I can get some proper stuff from?

CB750 / Getting wheels rebuilt - huge cost!?
« on: June 05, 2017, 05:06:44 PM »
I want to get my spokes cb750k wheels returned. I plan on getting the hubs and rims powder coated satin black then take them to a wheel builder to get them laced with black spokes and trued.

I've been advised that powder coated spokes won't keep their finish for very long.

I contacted one place (black cat wheels) and they want to charge £174 per wheel and that's with me getting them powder coated first! Wtf! With new tyres as well I'm looking at over £350 per wheel!

Contacted another place (Devon rim company) and whilst they do provide black spokes they are unwilling to build a wheel using parts provided by a customer I.e. They only use brand new bits.

Anyone got any recommendations of who I could use in either South Wales, Devon or Dorset?

CB750 / Softening up old Cush drive rubbers

Myncush drive rubbers are rock hard. Is there anything I can do to try and soften them up? Replacements seem extortionate!

Anyone got any recommendations for some good torque wrench brands for me to look at? I've got a cheapdraper one currently and it's mega hard to feel the click sometimes which results in overtightening things

CB750 / K6 UK/US wiring harness differences?
« on: February 06, 2017, 08:40:26 PM »
Hi guys,

The wiring on my US K6 is old and crusty and as I'm doing a full rebuild I want to replace it.

As standard this bike had a headlight that was wired to be on, I have since bought a UK spec switchgear which will allow me to turn the lights on and off. My question is - are the UK and US harnesses themselves any different? I've seen a reasonably priced harness on eBay from Z1 parts (a supplier ive seen mentioned on our yank sister site) for ~£80 delivered, but just want to check it's the right fit before pulling the trigger.

The replacement part I've found is 3200-341-703 whilst CMSNL states the correct part number for a U.K. Spec K6 as 32100-341-900

CB750 / Shorter push pull throttle cables
« on: August 18, 2016, 05:46:33 PM »
Does anyone know where i can get hold of some push pull throttle cables that are about 3 inches shorter than stock for my CB750k6?

Im going to be using renthal ultra lows, a company called motion pro do a shortened cutch cable off the shelf but would have to make me custom cables for the throttle (too expensive).

I was thinking perhaps cables of something like a CB400f would fit?

UPDATE:

Just realised that as i have a US import i have higher stock handlebars, i reckon OEM throttle cables for a euro spec bike will fit my lower bars (renthal ultra lows)

CB750 / KO-K2 Fork ears for a K6?
« on: August 16, 2016, 12:52:19 PM »
Im looking to replace my fork ears and am ditching my indicators. Ive been looking at pattern K0-K2 fork ears on DSS as they come without the indicator mounting holes which will look better. Is there any reason why they wouldn't fit? just looking at the pics that seems to be the only difference.

K0-K2:

On the same note a day or so ago there was a post on here with someone offering K0 fork ears and head light bucket pattern parts but i can't for the life of me find the thread, i think it may have been deleted. If anyone knows who it was then please let me know  ;)

Its seems over the other side of the pond trick parts for SOHC bikes are plentiful and cheap with suppliers like Dime City Cycles and 4into1 (to name only two out of many!).

Over here it seems aftermarket bits are insanely priced and just a bit crap. Does anyone know of any decent suppliers i can look up? Im after some brat style / cafe racer bits

Project Board / CB750 Barn find project - First Timer
« on: July 23, 2016, 09:45:10 PM »
Hi guys,

I taking delivery of a 1976 CB750 tomorrow which is a non runner from a dry US state, something for me to spend my spare time tinkering with. Needless to say i have naff all history with this bike.

According to the seller it has good compression and when fed a few squirts of ether it fires and tries to start & run. My mechanical expertise are basic from doing various jobs on cars, and I've bought this bike to actually develop some better mechanical know how.

As i don't know the history of why this bike was stored in the first place I'm a little reluctant to start trying to fire her up straight off the bat - Can anyone give me any damage controlling tips on what i should check beforehand?

My first job will be to tear down and refurb the carbs, hopefully this will get her at least ticking over. Only time will tell hey!
