Impossible to say from one photo, the camera and lighting makes a huge difference. Here is another shot that looks much more golden...... If its a Honda factory job I would expect it to be pretty close but I haven’t seen one so may be completely wrong.

Don't buy the CB1100 it's a real lemon, the older CB1300 is a FAR superior bike.

How so?

My mates still in the trade and we were discussing the 1100 as it's very similar to my present 1300, seems Honda made it fairly gutless, exhaust is very restrictive and it's the ports that are too small not the actual exhaust, the 1300 will pull your arms off, the 1100 would struggle to pull you out of bed.

In fairness the 1300 was intended to compete with the muscle bike offerings (larger displacement and bhp), the 1100's supposed competition is the modern retros i.e. Bonneville which it matches almost in paper statistics.

If the 1100 had been made a 750 with lower weight and the same performance it might not have seemed so bad, but other than weight and low power what else makes them a 'lemon'?

Just curious they seem to be quite rare in the UK still and haven't heard many opinions, personally I think they're too expensive for what they offer but I would still have one when prices get to the 3-4k mark.

I like them, they look great and im sure they would go well for what they are.. if you want big performance they probably aren’t the best choice  ;). I had a CB1300 and i liked that too... but i was always looking for an extra gear, they are very buzzy.... unlike say a firestorm where i was always in 3rd but still going too fast...very long legs. Each to his own. Im currently enjoying my 750 which is like a moped compared to either of the above  :)

Wasn’t the 1300 available in Japan (or at shows) a long time before it was released here?

Maybe as a 1000 cc model, big 1?

I remember the press reporting on a much better version which couldn’t have helped sales

I was REALLY sold on the CB1100 when it was first advertised. Air cooled, basic old fashioned looks, clean...OK the tank shape wasn't perfect....but it had everything I wanted.

It also had something I did NOT want ..... a limiter.

It was limited to 115mph in top ( not a huge issue really ) but it was limited by stopping the motor revving out in every gear. It took was a relatively plodding 85hp chunky lump, and destroyed the real world performance too.

Sure...you can mod it to get rid of that, but insurance companies get SO riled up over mods, and doubly so when they up performance...but if I was doing that...I would look to swap the tank for a CB900F unit, along with the seat and panels.....and do a Spencer rep job. But...for me...it's such a stressful job just ringing up insurance companies for quotes on a standard Hornet 900 in London...with no garage...that I don't dare start talking about serious mods.

But all that aside....the 'sort of gold' doesn't suit it for me. I'd want the candy red. My Hornet is candy glory red...and I absolutely love the colour. My F2 will be that colour when I get to paint...not original...but with a black motor, a few shiny bits, and deep wine red candy paint.

Sounds like you really should have bought an 80's CB1100F (import) - would meet all your stated requirements! (I had a CB1100R and it was a quick bike even by todays standards)

My 2 pennyworth - I used a new CB1300 to commute into London in 2004. It was a brilliant bike.......tons of power, sooooo reliable a good handler and really comfortable - even as a commuter. After 2 years I looked at a BMW Boxer.....not for me......too tall, and that shaft drive was 'unusual' as it seemed to kick the rear end out under hard acceleration.....then I visited a Triumph Dealer and tried a Speed Triple......not for me....too dinky and lots of fiddly little bits sticking out and just waiting to be broken (been there and done that with a grands worth of damage to a Kwacker ZXR 1200 that I left the disc lock on when I started off) so on the way home I called into Dobles in Croydon and got another new CB1300S........they gave me a great part ex price (I think they could have sold my old bike 10 times over as it was immaculate and had a full Honda Service Record).

I used that 2006 bike to commute for another year until I moved too far away to ride every day, and started to use the Train (bad mistake on my part).

I have looked at the CB1100, but TBH it looks like a poor relation to the CB1300 and I much prefer liquid cooled motors to air cooled motors........and it is a LOT of money compared to buying a good used CB1300.

Would I buy a CB1100 or a CB1300 ? A CB1300 would be my choice every time - I'll check under the Christmas Tree on 25 December ! LOL.

@Philward ...I did look. Prices were rather high, and still are when they turn up. Which isn't often. Maybe one day.....

I still reckon, for a daily commuter in London, the 900 Hornet is hard to beat. Suits me nicely. I sat on CB1300...and got as far as a test ride. But it was just too heavy, and the Hornet was so much easier to hustle around town.

I made this a few years ago - 1100F frame, Laverda forks, CBR600 wheels/brakes and CB900F engine with Wiseco 1000 big bore kit. (bought it half built as part of 3 900's job lot) pulled like a train - sold it to fund K2 rebuild

Lovely bike Phil. Laverda forks, class👍.
I tried a CB1300S in 2007, lovely bike but the Honda dealer wouldn't give any sort of discount, not even a £10 tank protector! I bought a new Triumph ST1050 instead!

When the CB1100 was launched, my brother bought one of the first generation (five speed, single silencer) straight away. Over the course of a year, he became disenchanted with it - no specific problems, but very limited tank range and no weather protection etc. All things that would have been evident before purchase, however my brother tends to buy on impulse and has owned another two bikes since selling the Honda.

My riding friend owned a CB750 (1970, the bike that was restored by John Wyatt and offered as a prize in a competition by one of the magazines in the late 1990's). Eventually, maintenance issues (my friend cannot manage tasks such as chain adjustment, for instance) and the fact that he could only store one bike caused him to part with it after some 15 years. He then bought a second generation CB1100 (new, in red) and kept that for just over two years before deciding that it was too heavy for him and so part - exchanged it for a Kawasaki Z900RS early this year.

Neither my brother nor my friend expected to lose very much money on their CB1100s, however both did. My brother's bike sat at the dealers for almost a year, before being sold on at less than the part - exchange allowance. My friends is still for sale at the local Kawasaki dealer, where he works part - time, almost twelve months after it was put on display.

All in all, a lovely looking bike that seems to appeal to a very limited number of buyers, so if you do buy one be prepared to keep it or lose heavily!

Someone's dressing them up to make a more classic look. The form is nobbled by that engine being so tall though,  it dominates the whole layout compared to SOHC which is much shorter.

Photographed in daylight though,  so no potential flash illuminance bias that may have been present in Hunt's example.

I'm smitten ! for me performance doesn't come into it, 80 odd bhp is plenty,  but i have read somewhere that servicing costs are high, that is not an issue with the K1 with screw adjustable tappets and points, why can't all bikes be that simple ?

Those painted versions look fantastic.....almost identical to the original CB...just shows how a paintjob makes all the difference  8)
