Title: Hi from Northern Ireland.
Post by: petebog on June 07, 2020, 08:00:54 PM
Hi all, new to the forum, but not entirely new to these old Hondas, had a few of them over the years although I'm by no means any kind of an expert so will be looking help and advice on this '76 550F which I just got a couple of days ago.
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200607/7817e0c65375a97f71e611f800af7265.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200607/2be2080e337ab04eac37cc2fb7e4951b.jpg)
It's in very nice condition but I've actually taken a bit of a punt on it as a non runner. Most recent mot certificate that came with the bike was 1997. It was then restored at some point after that by the seller's father, and seems to have been recently only used for vintage displays at NW200 and such like. Seller reckoned it needs a new alternator / rectifier and probably the carbs cleaned etc. The battery is completely flat so as bought there's no life in it at all. It looks nice though...
I'll start another thread for work ongoing to try and get it running, so any advice much appreciated, cheers, Pete.

Welcome Pete, nice looking bike, what are your plans with it? get it running and use it as it is or further restoration?

Welcome to the forum Pete. Nice looking bike you have there and hopefully you get it running OK.  Keep us posted with updates and plenty of photos.
I always use Motobatt batteries myself, never had a problem with them and they hold their charge for long periods.

Welcome to the 400four forum.

+1 on the Motobatt battery.  That's your first item for replacement,  you can't do much fault finding with a 23 year old battery.

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah the plan is to get it running and on the road first and foremost, then just ride it over the summer and make small improvements as I go, assuming there aren’t any major problems when I do get it going… There are definitely a few jobs need doing. Yes new battery will be the first, and like Oddjob mentions, side panel decal is missing and other side panel is quite badly cracked and very badly repaired with some kind of black mastic / sealant effort. Rear inner guard is cracked too and plastered with the same stuff. Master cylinder leaks. Hand grips say SuperBike on them so I’ll be changing those. (Think the very first bike mag I ever bought way back when was SuperBike - mild customs and scantily clad ladies, both of which I was quite keen on at the time :D) I was a bit sceptical too about the alternator diagnosis, didn’t really think they gave much trouble, but I’m no expert.

Welcome Pete - great bike with not much work to do. I too would recommend a Motobatt, have them on 2 of my bikes that I use infrequently and never lets me down.

If rear inner guard is same as 500(very possible) i have several non perfect ones, as to side panels go to LPM and buy new to paint they are more flexible than original, stickers from Piki on this site

Hi welcome. Thought that bike looked familiar and you mentioned NW200.

Caught my eye there 2 years ago and one of few SOHC Honda's there.

Thanks again for the input, have been looking at batteries on ebay and Motobatt is around £60, Yuasa seems to be a bit more, but noticed you can get a lithium battery for just under £100, don’t know if there would be any point in spending the extra £40 though?

Bryanj, thanks for the offer of rear inner guard, I’m not certain if it’s same as 500 or not but from memory it looks pretty similar. I do have some bits in boxes that have been stored away for years and I think there might be one in there from a 500 I had that went completely stripped down cafe racer. I’ll have a look and if I don’t have one I’ll give you a shout. Hadn’t seen the LPM website before, looks the same as what you can get from David Silver but maybe a bit cheaper? And looked at stickers from Piki as well so will be getting some of those.

Oddjob, would probably be interested in that side panel if you can find it, I do actually quite like the glitteryness of the flake sunrise!

Rozabikes Tim, nice to see pic of bike from couple of years ago. I only just peeled those stickers off the headlamp yesterday! So it’s been for sale for a while then, and I’m the first one that’s been mug enough to take it on as a non runner! I do think it’s going to turn out well though…

LPM is the same as Dave Silver as he buys from them!

Don't think you are a mug as long as the money was right. It looks very nice and original pipe is a real result on those.

I  was blown away by the scenery in the area at the NW200. Are you lucky enough to live near there then?

Yeah I do think it’s going to turn out to be a good bike once it’s sorted. And the original pipe is nice, there’s one on eBay at the moment that DK Motorcycles want £600 for!

I don’t live on the north coast but the ride there from Belfast up round the Antrim coast road is a firm favourite with just about anyone over here on 2 wheels. (Also a firm favourite with the Sunday drivers unfortunately.. ) You’ll find it in those lists they make of best rides in the UK, and scenery is spectacular alright!

We were in a camper van so didn't partake in those joys but I know what you mean! The other memory I have was the people were just so genuine and friendly. Great craic!

I’ve done the Antrim Coast Road on the way to NW200 about 10 years ago. There were 6 of us on Triumphs and it pissed down the whole week. The sea was coming over the road at times.

The bike racing went ahead though

We stayed in Cookstown (don’t they have a race as well?)

Yes they do have a race there. I really fancy doing some of the smaller events for the different atmosphere.

Back to the scenery at the NW200 picture below taken just off the track, by York corner in Portstewart. Dramatic setting or what...

Yeah I’d recommend the Antrim Coast road, although I can’t say it doesn’t rain a lot of the time here.. probably even more so if you continue on round to the Wild Atlantic Way, and I think people are normally very welcoming, contrary to what you might expect given the history here! There’s plenty of road racing still as well.

I’ve continued with another post on the electrical problem in a new thread in the 500 / 550 section, cheers.

Thanks Oddjob, sorry for the late reply, my Mum's been taken into hospital and is very ill so the bike's been put on the back burner for a while.
It's a right hand side panel I need anyhow, so I'll probably just get a new one from LPM and spray the whole lot to match. Paint on the tank is pretty good but does have a few chips around the edges and is starting to bubble a bit, although mostly just on the bit that's hidden by the front of the seat.
That link to all the colour options that were available is interesting, especially the 500s. I'd always thought that all the 500s were the same brown and black, in fact I'm pretty sure someone once told me that way back in the mists of time, and as already discussed, colours aren't my strong point!
Haven't decided yet what colour I'm going to do this one but as I don't register anything subtle I'll probably either keep it the same Shiny Orange or change it to the even less subtle Flake Sunrise Orange. Are there paint codes available for those colours or anywhere that would specialise in mixing old Honda colours?

No codes i'm afraid as a lot of the mettallics are actually 3 pack paint. RS paints do most honda colours from the name

Hi Pete,

Just seeing your posts. Where in NI are you? I am in Glengormley, currently struggling to resurrect a 400F.

You can find colour codes here:

 http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPaintCodes.htm (http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPaintCodes.htm) or here

 https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/honda-parts/honda-color-codes (https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu/en/honda-parts/honda-color-codes)

FSO is R-2C-F-LV
SO is YR-26

Sean, those are what Honda call codes but unfortunately they mean nothing to a paint supplier

Hi Sean, I’m not too far away from you then, I’m in Dundonald. Have you much more work to do to get the 400 going? I got the 550 hoping it was going to be a quick fix, could still turn out that way.

And looks like RS paints could be the least hassle source for getting the right colour then, cheers.

A long way, but hopefully not too long time wise.

Bike is completely dismantled now. Parts off to be powder-coated. Engine cleaned, mostly, and ready for painting and polishing.

Then it’s just a matter of putting it back together.  :D

I only have my travelling tool-kit to work with, so I go down to a mate’s place in Millisle fairly often to use his tools - you know essential things like a vice and a blow torch. I’ll give you a shout before I go next and maybe we can meet up.

Hi Sean, sorry for delayed response, we buried my Mum last week so been otherwise preoccupied and head's been all over the place, so looking forward to getting stuck into the bike again as soon as I can. Do give me a shout some time, would be good to meet up. Think I recall seeing 1 or 2 old Hondas advertised for sale in Millisle - probably your mate there.

Thanks Bryan, yeah there just seems to have been so much to do with the funeral and organising the affairs, and so many people around, but things have quietened down now and I’ve a bit more time to think about it, so I probably need to get stuck in to working on the bike as a bit of good therapy..
