CB500/550 / NEED TO TALK ABOUT TANGS 😀😀
« on: April 08, 2019, 05:08:21 PM »
Hi Chaps.
Question.....on carb floats, should there be a dip in the tang or should the tang be straight?
I still have a pissy carb on the 550 so just going through all the usual diagnostics and was just wondering if the actual shape of the tang makes any difference to the float height?. I can't see how it would but thought I'd ask (him indoors is busy).
Photos of one of my tangs. CB550/4 F carbs.

Looks the part in a handy case, My smallest is 3/8 drive britool about 40 yrs old.
Trig uses the old Britool torque wrenches including the little 3/8 drive.

I am of an age now where intended projects are'nt going to happen, i have no regrets in having to "relocate my store of parts", the house move has given me the impetus to take this action. The big wrench will be when the bike goes, i have lavished, time, love and a lot of cash into it!
If we are lucky, that age will come to us all in the end. But, if you have enjoyed owning, fettling and more important than anything else, enjoyed riding it, we should consider ourselves very fortunate.

Yes it is Simoniz, yes, it comes in silver (that's the product number above).
No paint is 100% petrol proof/ chemical resistant, unless you go for a 2K. But, on my engines where a little petrol has touched the paint, as long as i wipe it off, it doesn't take the paint off.
Difficult to find anyone who can use 2K without getting lots of dribbles when trying to paint in between the fins.

Not happy right now.  I'm cleaning up the bike ready for the Llanishen show in Cardiff, bought some Gunk,   jet washing the stuff off when my side panel decal disintegrated. I just hope classicreproductiondecals can get a replacement to me by Friday.
I always said washing bikes was overrated 😀😀😀

I have no idea what the original case finish was like on a sloper but SIMVHT31D is what we use on all 69-78 CB SOHC/4's.

You have to bend the tangs back to remove the trim but, they are prone to breaking if they are rusty.

What a lovely old film. It's a bit before my biking escapades started. Took test in 1978 on a CD175 with wooden brakes front and rear but just managed to stop in time to avoid the examiner for a pass 😁😁😁

CB500/550 / Re: VIN & Engine Mismatch?
« on: April 04, 2019, 12:33:44 PM »
Because a bike BUILT late in 74 is a 75 model as they were on ships for a lot of weeks and then in transport across the US (a big place) to get to dealers. Honda frame and engine numbers never match and engines are very difficult to date and people in US would sooner throw in a salvage engine than repair what they have.

Ahh okay - that makes sense! And so the dating of the title - is that correct or should it be '75? And when there are mismatched engine/frame dates, does the dating change? Is it based on the engine's age or the frame's?
Always on the frame number (VIN)

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you have a V5 that shows the correct VIN and engine number as they are on the bike, thats all that matters. As Bryan says, its probably had an engine change sometime, or even a frame change or both.
