Is it after revving?, could be a leak between downpipe and cylinder head.  Maybe your ignition timing is out.
thanks for the reply,i have only had bike a few months, and i no he put a new exhaust on her,so i will undo all the clamps and re tighten just in case

hi all,i have developed a backfire problem on tick over,i have not used the bike for 1 week, and all i have done to it was changed my points cover for a nice shiny one in that week,if i adjust tick over to about 1800 it disappears?so is it over fuelling?? or is it just a bit of crap in the carbs??
any ideas would be really good thanks

If the backfire is on the over-run it is most probably caused by a leaking joint between one of your downtubes and the cylinder head.  My bike does it a lot but it is accentuated by the rather short exhaust.  I quite like it.  I have found that it can be reduced by slower throttling off.

The tappet noise I cannot comment upon without hearing it.  Chances are, if it's not massively loud, it's most likey to be normal.  All the Honda engines I've known, both new and old are rather rattly, especially the clutch on these fours.
hi there, yes it is on the over-run,as for the downtube,do you mean the exhaust as i have noticed a snapped off exhaust stud to the cylinder head

hi all again :)
i have another small niggle with the bike :-[
its i have a small backfire/pop when i close the throttle,it does not happen all the time just now again, say 1/2 on a 10mile trip.
i can live with it at the moment but i am a bit of a fiddler and hoping someone has got any ideas
also i think the tappets sound a bit noisy,i no its a 31 year old bike ,and i do expect a few little niggles ,but i am a fussy git, should i expect them to be a bit noisy?? as it has done 37000 miles
but she starts and runs really well, ticks over once warm nice and smooth, just a bit noisy on the tappet side, and the little pop/backfire
the bloke i got her from only did 200miles on her in 2 years so would it be that she just needs a few hundred miles put on her to free everything(i am using her most days to and from work but thats only 3 miles each way)

hi all,at last i have found the problem
as i said before i have not had the bike for long and started to explore when the problem happened again,i traced a few wires from clutch lever etc and found that every time i turned the handle bars to the left all the lights etc went off, when i straighten them it would all work fine :(
so loose wire somewhere ???
i found it :) :)
it was the earth to the coils underneath the tank, someone has had a right go at this as found 5 green earth cables had been soldered(not very well) see pic

ok it happened when i  started it to come home from work ??? so when the neutral light still on i pulled the clutch in and she started 1st time :)
so does this mean the neutral interlock is playing up??

Sounds really strange this one, so the starter turns over but the engine does not fire as if the kill switch is in the off position, and a quick cycle through the gears resets it. Most peculier !

Cheers

Den
yes you have nailed the symptoms on the head,it is  like the kill switch being on,as it is at the moment i can put up with it,but its just a bit strange
i don't have a kill switch button at the mo as the button was not there when i got the bike

Do you normally leave the bike with the fuel tap turned off? Try leaving it in the ON or PRIME position and see if it starts easier.
Sounds to me like slight fuel starvation. Running up and down the gearbox will have no effect on starting, it will however give the float bowls a little extra time to fill up.

What happens if instead of going up and down the gears you just let it sit for a few seconds ?

hi there,it makes no diff if i leave fuel tap on or off,it only happens twice a week if i use it every day

hi there, thanks for the reply :)
there is no clicking or whirring, the engine still turns over as normal, also if i try to start it in gear the same thing happens if i pull the clutch in(engine turns over fine but does not fire)then i shift  through the gears then try it when neutral   light is back on and all is fine,i might try and have a look at the neutral connection when i get a mo

hi all, since i am still learning about this bike :-[ i get a strange problem now and again when i start her up
it is that when i press starter button she just turns over without engine firing, neutral light is on,almost like electrical fault
i then shift through the gears and then back to get neutral light back and she then is fine
i have read tha haynes ,and noticed there is a clutch fail safe
anynone got any ideas :)
