That is beautiful, lovely colours too.

That's an impressive set-up. Worth keeping their name for the future, thanks for the link.

... but it is next to a much more valuable bike.

That's the answer!  ;D

Phil (apologies for the lack of constructive input there...)

Just measured up the Avon Roadrider on the rear of mine (120/90-18). Avon says this tyre is 129mm wide and there is 27 mm total clearance so you can (in theory) get a 155mm tyre in there, but that's with no clearance and assumes my dimensions are spot on. I've not got a chain hooked up at the moment so the wheel might need to come forward and that will narrow down the space available as the swingarm tapers in.

On the front I've got a 100/90-19 (109mm wide ) and this has 34mm clearance total, so you could get something up to 143mm wide

http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcycle/roadrider

Avon list a 140/70-18 which is 142 wide and almost the same circumference. Can't see anything else for the front, although other makes might do something.

This is measured on my 1979 650Z (similar to the one in the picture)

Oh, that's a nice spot of re-wiring you've inherited! Still, all valuable experience, you'll know the bike inside-out soon... glad you got sorted though,

Hi and welcome. UK Pete must be right on your doorstep in Sidcup, and I think Yoshi is in that neck of the woods too, so you'll have company. I'm pretty sure one or the other get along to the VJMC meets,

Could be, as pulling the clutch in should over-ride the "not in neutral" signal from the gear selector. So although your neutral light is on it seems that maybe the interlock thinks it ain't in neutral.

I still need to check the manual though as I'd have thought it's the same circuit and therefore both signals (whether right or wrong) should match.

I wonder whether the neutral interlock is playing up, and running it up and down the gears shakes it back into life. Although you say the neutral light shows on when it's happening so possibly not, but maybe the light is OK but the interlock circuit isn't always breaking (or making, not sure which it does)...

Let me have a look at the manual and think about it.

When it next happens, put it into first gear, pull the clutch in, and see if it starts then.

Could be the infamous starter clutch, they are prone to fail. Do you hear anything, like a whirring or fast clicking, when it fails to spin the engine?

If I remember, the clutch failsafe means that the clutch needs to be pulled in the bike is in gear. There's a neutral interlock that stops you from turning the engine over with it in gear, and this can be over-ridden by pulling the clutch lever in. The neutral connection is behind the front sprocket cover, the clutch interlock is on the clutch lever.

just had a look at the Haynes for the 650, and the M8 bolts should be 17-22lb ft (23-30 Nm) so your original numbers aren't far off that. Does feel pretty weedy when you torque a head to only those levels though, don't it?

The few M6's on the 650 are less than half these values. You hardly seem to turn them past finger tight and the torque wrench clicks.
