CB500/550 / Front Disc/Hub Bolts x 6
« on: December 02, 2023, 05:38:55 PM »
My six bolts that secure  the front disc to the hub are in pretty good condition - they look like they are chromed as there was a hint of rusting that cleaned off with some chrome cleaner (no markings on the bolt heads) - the nuts however are very dull presumably originally BZP or similar?

Can I use SS nuts instead or is there an issue in mixing the metals or the ability to torque up correctly?

If I have worked the size out correctly the captive headlamp earth nuts on the 400 & 500 are M9 presumably 1.25 pitch thread can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier for some SS bolts?

I had some SS hex headed flange bolts in my stock & could do with a couple more.

CB500/550 / Chainguard Repair
« on: November 28, 2023, 04:54:49 PM »
Not sure if it will work long term but used some Epoxy Resin repair solution to fix a broken section.  I added some micronised graphite to make it black.
I have some proper paint for flexible plastics that I will paint it with eventually.
Cleaned/roughed up the broken area & drilled it for a couple of strengthening pegs plus some saw cuts to help the bonding.

Purists do not read beyond this point.

As some folk will know I have fitted a LED unit to my 500 - good old google has come up with a suggestion that I might like this retro P700 type lamp.

Just wondered if anyone here has fitted one - a bit cheaper than the DS unit - not sure what the beam pattern would be like.

Misc / Open / Rear Chain Adjusters - am I being too fussy?
« on: November 15, 2023, 08:14:28 PM »
It's been nagging me for a while that my chromed rear chain adjusters are not a pair the chrome - is acceptable on both.

One has what I would describe as a threaded welded inside boss, the other is like a captive nut.  Knowing my luck if I buy a replacement it will be something that matches neither.

p/n 95014-19000 £12.58 plus post at DS shown as Genuine Part on the 500 page.

CB500/550 / Correct spark plugs for my 500 ?
« on: November 13, 2023, 02:41:08 PM »
Parts manual shows NGK D-7ES or Denso X-22ES

The Denso seems to now have a U at the end now shows as Denso X-22ES-U

The NGK looks as though it is obsolete - I have resistor caps so don't want NGK DR-7ES.

Green Spark Plug Co shows the Denso X-22ES-U at good price.

Can't find my old spark plugs - I've been using some used NGK D8EA plugs to keep debris out.

CB500/550 / Powder coating the front hubs on my 500.
« on: November 11, 2023, 04:10:09 PM »
I'm planning to take my 500 hubs to CWC for the wheel builds in the next few weeks.
Chatting to them a couple of weeks ago they seemed to be pushing for Ceracoat rather than a chrome finish powder coating.
One aspect was that it is thinner & hard wearing.

That had me thinking about how far the coating should go on the disc side & on the Speedometer drive side. Obviuosly not on the taper where the disc fits - would it be an issue if on the speedometer drive side they did the face where the drive plate sits?

Is there an easy fix for floppy footrest when in the upright position?

Misc / Open / Sleeper train journeys

Wendy & I fancy a trip by train to Scotland on a sleeper type holiday for a few days next summer.

Has anyone here any pointers or experience?

I bought a B & W rear plate for my 500 in February this year from a firm calling themselves "Qualitypressings" on flea bay (seller currently on holiday).
It was not cheap at £18.70  it included a pretty substantial bonded on alloy backing plate so on the face of it seemed good quality when it arrived.

I was well miffed when today as I carefully attached the plate to the rear fender mounting the black backing was already starting to bulge from the plate.
Even worse as I tightened up the plastic screws two ping marks appeared on the plate that have no obvious cause - not the mounting bracket plus no corresponding marks on the back of the plate. The rear of the plate when I removed it is lovely unmarked flat alloy wtf. I have contacted the seller but unlikely they will replace it f.o.c. imho.

Does anyone make propper pressed plates today or are they all stick on types as mine clearly is?

Wish I had orderd B&W plastic now.

CB500/550 / Chain surface rust question?
« on: October 26, 2023, 10:59:30 AM »
My 500 clearly had some damp or rain exposure as this is the chain that was new about 2 years ago now - it has covered less than 50 miles.

The outside part of the chain has surface rust, the inside is almost rust free - is it worth cleaning it up & using it?
I guess the blue appearance of the chain will be gone once I remove the surface rust with rust remover.

It's more of a safety question than cosmetics - I have new sprockets.

CB500/550 / I must be stupid but how does air chamber fit?
« on: October 23, 2023, 01:55:28 PM »
Thought I would bob the carbs onto the engine - not difficult - nicely in place nipped up the circlips.
Thought I might as well pop the 4 into 1 air chamber box onto the carb intakes.
It will not fit from the carb side of the frame so tried popping it down from the top in the middle of the frame with the battery & battery box removed but it is stll too big to fit past the right side of the frame.
I have the four rubbers fitted to the plastic air chamber box - I can get the rubber onto number 1 carb but the other end will not get past the frame!

Do I need to remove the right hand upper engine mounting bracket to get the end of the air chamber box past the frame or is there some other rubics cube route that I am missing?

I have removed the carbs again just in case!!

Member 4 Sales / 500 front fender brace/bracket.
« on: October 18, 2023, 04:57:02 PM »
I fitted the DS front fender as my original one was rotted out - I did drill out the main top brace/bracket if it is of use to anyone - free just postage cost.

I also have the stays but due to length postage might not be worthwhile to anyone.

CB500/550 / The 500 exhaust conundrum.
« on: October 14, 2023, 09:34:22 PM »
I need to start thinking seriously about an exhaust stystem for the 500 I'm minded to go for the Dekelvic system as it's not daft money plus it's stainless as well.
I like a longer silencer so the Mega looks good plus they do Black Ceramic for a bit extra not sure what it will look like in a couple of years.........but.

When these bikes were new in the 1970's I thought the exhaust system was very dated across the range compared to other bikes of the period (the word bulbous comes to mind) - I thought Goldstar silencers looked great on my Triumph 21 - now I think the original Honda four pipe system looks right on a 1972/3 era bike. Such a pity that Dekelvic do not make a four pipe system.

Are there other new options on the new market that I am missing?

I'm hoping my BiL has a set I can borrow in the new year so I can improve on bench sync process on the 500.

I've looked at previous posts as to reasonable quality gauges but quoted item numbers are out of date. My Ultrasound Bath is a Vevor - still going strong so wondered if anyone here has used these?
