An up lifting thread Ted. It’s good to hear the positives in a very difficult and thought provoking situation. My condolences to you and your family.

I wonder if the rattling noise is due to the well documented issue of wear in rocker shaft bores of the valve cover due to rotation  of the shafts. This will produce inconsistent valve clearances and can be seen looking at the end of the rocker shafts. This can easily be checked by removing the small end covers in the first instance. Later bikes had pegged shafts to stop the rotation and I have a spare such cover.

I solved my cool number 1 cylinder by reducing the pilot jet to 35.

Another possibility for the noise is related to the cam chain tensioner. The blade on mine had eventually broken off and was found in the sump.

I managed to get rid of that pull away bogging on mine by leaning off the air screws.

That’s a proper old mechanic trick for cleaning up the thread. Satisfying to get the nest bearings in 👍

Just been through this on my iPad. Johnny and after a lot if searching found this solution.iPad makes it really difficult to resize compared to phones etc.
Select the photo you want in photos
Tap on the the send to box with arrow top lhs
Select mail
On the mail message tap on images
Select one of the smaller sizes to send
Send the email to yourself
Open the email you have received. This now has the smaller size photo you can save to photos or elsewhere then you can upload that one to forum posts etc

Hope this helps
Cheers
David

St1100 pan European. Superb tourers and your wife will love you for the pillion comfort. Weight disappears when moving and with two of you ok to manage shoving around car parks. Cheap as chips , superb quality and reliability. CBF1000 another good choice. If you are used to cb500 seating ergos long distances on a sprint of vfr will seem uncomfortable on the wrists. Good to test ride a few before buying if possible.

I’ve got a spare valve cover ( the better type with pegged rocker shafts ) if you are interested.

Any plans for a rear mud flap?🌞
Not really Ted it was the odd splash on the front from an unavoidable puddle I was trying to prevent.

My Von Haus tool arrived yesterday so I quickly made short work of removing the powder coating from the three affected areas.
On the plus side the new tool will come in handy for quite a few other jobs in the garage.
Use mine all the time Ted eg wire brush for cleaning up threads. Flexible drive shaft makes it easy to access tight areas and do fine work. The metal cutting discs you can get are great for quick jobs and much has been written about the plastic  polishing wheels recommended initially by Ken. You won’t regret getting one.

Tricks & Tips / Split link installation
« on: March 20, 2024, 08:43:44 AM »
Was fitting a new JT o ring chain to my off-road bike yesterday. Not embarrassed to say it took over two hours.

The problem is when the 4   o rings on the split link are in place the slots in the pins do-not protrude enough to slide the clip into place. Tried all sorts of pushing tools, pliers and even getting a mini c clamp onto the end of the assembly to compress it. It just wasn’t going to happen however much force I could muster because one or other ends  of the spring  is pressing against the full  diameter of the pin not into the recessed slot.  With one set of o rings left out - an absolute piece of cake just like the non o ring chains we fit to our sohc ‘s but that’s a poor solution.

So here’s the tip. Ignore every single you tube video which shows the clip being pressed on sideways using pliers/ screwdriver. Fit the closed end first and  easily slide the clip fully  into place on the closed end pin with the open end rotated away from its pin. Then rotate the open end of the clip adjacent to its pin and gently lever one of the arms slightly up and over the pin. It then needs pressing inwards to fully locate into the slot. With both open ends arms  now in the slot you can also check that it has slid fully across. There is really very minimal bending on the clip and afterwards  it’s held in place straight and secure. 20 secs from first installing the closed end to done after a two hour struggle ! Hope this helps someone - nothing I could see out there on any forums etc.

Fitted the front mudguard  flap that Gareth very kindly sourced for me. I think it’s looks good and fitted the width of the guard perfectly - photos below.

Up to 120 miles now and running great  - no issues at all. Wearing earplugs cured the excess noise , a little more economical than buying a new 4 into 4. It is such fun to bimble along B roads at 40 -  60 mph - torquey, comfortable, pleasing to wind up and fairly nimble. Who needs a 150 bhp £20 k super naked when these look better and are so satisfying to ride ?

Bars look much better Johnny. That’s some collection of well organised tools. Saw an interesting idea in classic mechanics mag this month - a one foot by 1 inch magnetic strip handily placed for dropping on bolts / tools etc while working. Saves scrabbling for bolts on the floor when you container gets knocked over..DAMHIK😉
