CB500/550 / Can anyone help identify these?
« on: December 19, 2022, 01:00:09 PM »
Slightly annoyed to find these two shims in my box of bits created when I stripped my front and rear CB500 K1 wheels right down for a hub reline and rebuild. I have no idea where they should go. External diameter 30mm, internal diameter 23mm.

I stripped and refurbished the speedo drive too and am wondering if that's where they came from but having looked at Trigger's photo at the bottom of this post: http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,20419.30.html there is only one shim behind the circlip and my speedo drive has gone back together just fine.

Anyone got any ideas? I can't see anything in the part list.

Not much progress this week as still waiting on the painter to do the frame and all metal black parts.

Had I little time so, stripped the speedo drive down and rebuild. If no one have ever seen one of these apart before and how many parts to it but, only one part number.

Where are those two small washers from?

This has been brought up in a recent post bylaverdaroo i think.
We think it is some sort of damper on later drive plates, possibly to try and stop speedo needle bounce, not found on earlier plates and not officialy replaceable, i think Roo used some sort of rubberised bonding like Sicaflex but dont know if it will work

Gotcha. I was tempted to get it plated but best leave it alone as its pretty well hidden anyway. Glad to clear that up.

There are no seals on the drive plate so no idea what you are on about

It looks like the top piece is rubber mounted so I'm guessing it's not a seal, more like a cushion. See photo

If I was giving one piece of advise on doing this Charlie it would be to make sure the screwdriver you are using to remove the grub screw fits perfectly. It's made of brass ( I think) and it's very soft and it's very easy to round it off with an ill fitting screwdriver. A little heat when removing it can't hurt as well. The bung in the end is a press fit, it's knurled so don't try to spin it out, the only way I found to get it out is to use the drive gear to push it out, that can be a little daunting as the small tang for the cable is all you have to press against, it's possible though. So remove the large seal first, remove the circlip holding the drive bevel in place and the shim and the drive bevel, then remove the grub screw, press out the drive gear and you can finally remove the seal on the drive gear then.

Got 2 of mine part right now, not decided on a grease yet but leaning towards using MolyD due to it's high loading properties but feel free to use what you think is best for you.

Great advice and I feel properly warned. Thanks Ken!

P.s. Has anyone ever replaced the seals in the speedo drive retainer pressed steel plate 44641-341-000 and know what the replacements should be?

Easy to take apart and refurbish. As in the bottom of this page >> http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,20419.30.html

Think that's a good plan, thanks

CB500/550 / Speedo Drive 1972 500 K1
« on: November 16, 2022, 12:42:17 PM »
As I've got my wheels apart for restoration I have a chance to refurbish my speedo drive. It looks OK tbh and I'm inclined to leave it alone. I guess the alternative is to thoroughly degrease and flush it and then repack with grease.

I've ordered a new speedo drive oil seal as recommended by Ken elsewhere (it doesn't appear in the parts list.)

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224125083081

I guess my question is:

1) Should I leave it alone or clean it up?

2) What grease should I use to repack it? The current grease is very black

Any suggestions are welcomed.

They look a little smaller diameter wise Charlie, 500 or 550? They are different for some reason.

Trick of the camera Ken. They are a perfect match, just not all worn and gnarly.

Cheers Oddjob, I think I just need the length of those 2 spacers if you have it.

Just to check the bore on both is 20mm, the sprocket side one O/D is 38mm stepping down to 34mm, and the brake side one O/D is 35mm with a 28mm reduced part in the centre.

I hope that makes sense

Just received my set. Oooh they are good. And looks like I needed them too  :) [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

It was Gary123 IIRC, he posted a pic for Roo and there was 2 of them on there. Roo was buying one and I asked about the other.

Post 192 on this thread.

You can ask both Roo and Gary if one is still available, you never know until you ask.

Sent em both to Roo, with Ken 2nd dibs. So Roo probably still has them

No worries, I think I’ll get mine replayed once alive worked out what the finish should be

I didn't know these were rare.  I have a spare one if anyone is stuck.

(someone should compile a rare spares list, too often, in the past,  I have thrown away bits when I've had a workshop tidy)

Do you still have it? Long shot I know but worth a punt.

The finish as standard is Zinc but not BZP as we commonly see on Hondas. Just your bog standard zinc.

Someone was selling 2 of them the other week, Roo bought one and I was after the other but no harm in asking, your need is probably greater than mine. My last one I had chromed, didn't turn out great TBH but it looked nice from a distance.

Standard zinc looks more silvery than the finish on the CMSNL photos?

Would you be able to message me the contact of the person who was selling one?

Thanks Ken.

[  quote author=McCabe-Thiele (Ted) link=topic=28747.msg271671#msg271671 date=1667824012]
If the company is based in Latvia I had a positive experience when I bought some diesel injection hoses for our old Jeep from a firm in Latvia.
The parts were as advertised and appeared to be genuine spares at around 2/3 of the UK price - pre #@%$.

Looking at the site for my spring they do not post to the UK?
[/quote]I’d have no problem buying from them but there is no photo and I have no idea of the condition. It’s highly unlikely to be NOS as there don’t seem to be any apart from in Bryan’s stores :)
