Project Board / Re: First time restoration !

Thanks again, looking around they do seem one of the few that actually state the engine turns/runs etc but needs work which is ok if you know about it.

Some sellers on eBay say engine seized, which although honest sounds like a big problem looming !!

Again thanks for all the comments, I am looking forward to getting stuck into something !

Many thanks for the replies guys, some pointers there for me.

Just another question, any thoughts on bikes that DK Classic Motorcycles sell ?

They have containers on bikes in now and again and put them on their Ebay shop, seen a few on there but wondered if anyone had used the and are they any good ?

As I live over 400 miles from their place not practical to go and look so would have to rely on photos and a phone conversation so any thoughts on them would be appreciated as well

cheers

Project Board / First time restoration !

Hi
Looking for advice on taking on my first restoration.
Bit of background, been riding Hondas since 1976 when Ipassed my test, I had a CB250G5 (had a C90, CD75 before that) and then progressed to CB750K7, VF1000 and various others and currently have a 1998 Blackbird with 95k miles on since I got it new.
Anyway, originally I was looking for my old 750 but as I couldn't find it (its SORNed and with no MOT somewhere)so I thought of getting another 750 to restore.
However as its my first I don't want to run before I can walk so thought maybe a CB250G5 would be a better way to start, plus they are cheaper as are the parts.
So is one of those a good way to dip my toes into the restoration game, I'm 67 and work part time and over the winter will be looking for stuff to do so thought this might stop me getting too bored !
Or should I bite the bullet and go for something bigger ?
Everyone has to start somewhere !

CB750 / Re: How much?

I will also be looking for a 750 (hopefully K7) to restore soon, had one from new and loved it, eventually sold it after 10 years but now I'm at an age I want to get another one and restore it if necessary. D&K seem ok but its a long way from Aberdeen so will have to plan it !!
This was mine when it was a couple of years old, we were on our way to our first European trip (Switzerland and back) and it was a fantastic holiday and memories, plus Deriboots !!

lol if I did they certainly wouldn't fit now !!

I bought them from the Honda shop in Aberdeen (Cheynes) around 1979, they had got them for some of the sales guys but the one I bought had been bought for someone who was 44" chest, like me, but he was probably only 44" tall as well (a weeble!) so obviously never fit him, so I got them cheap.

There was absolutely no protection, just thin leather but those days thats all we got, It was a good pose though !!

Mine was one of the blue ones and finally died on the way up Frodsham Hill to the dealer to collect a 250 !

That one looks very very nice :-)

Just joined the Forum in the hope I can get hold of an old K7 to restore.

However the above bike was mine for 9 years from 1979 so would interested to know if its still out there ?

Ah, that actually rings a distant bell.

One of the last trips we attempted was from Aberdeen to Jersey but only got as far as Oxford  because for some unknown reason I got a petrol leak through the carbs (also 2 punctures on the way down) and neither me nor the or AA could fix it so we ended up on a Relay Truck all the way back home (my god that was a trip I'll never forget because in those days the AA Recovery Trucks would only go to the extent of their 'Region' so we ended up swapping trucks all the way up !)
Anyway, may that was one of the Carb problems you mentioned.

Also, thanks for the welcomes ! :-)

Cheers Ian, yeah looking forward to getting stuck in !

I know some local guys who had a Folk Band and some of them still meet up in the Vale for the monthly meet of the Folk Club, not particularly my scene (prefer rock !!) but they are great lads and lasses.

Hi
Been riding since 1969 and had loads of different bikes but no 'fads' as I like to try and keep a bike as long as I can, currently own a 1998 Blackbird with 88k miles on her and a newer Tracer (yeah sorry!) which I got a couple of years ago and really like.
Anyoldway, my first proper bike was a CD175, went up to a Superdream 250 and then to a CB750K7 which I bought new from Bill Smiths in Chester (in the old place) in 1979. I kept the 750 for best part of 9 years and then sold it, which, in retrospect I shouldn't have done because it was a great bike, the photoo is me and the missus in 1981 setting off for Switzerland from Aberdeenshire on our first biking trip abroad.

Anyway the reason I have joined this is because I really fancy taking a poor old 750 and restoring it to as near standard as possible. I know my mechanical limitations but I also remember taking the engine out of the 750, powder coating the frame and just basically fettling, which with the new bikes you just can't do.

At the moment we are waiting to move house but the intention is to build a decent garage where I can make it decent enough to spend my dotage in and do some restoring so you can expect a lot of questions once I get going !

One question I do have, having read a  lot of posts on here, seems the 750k's are popular up to and including the K6, why is the K7 not as popular, is there something I don't know !!
