Still tinkering away on bits and pieces here.

The front axle was well and truly stuck and was not budging at all with me using an old screwdriver through the axle hole trick.  After much swearing and nearly taking my eye out when the screwdriver snapped I decide to doctor an old socket and use a bolt and two nuts through the hole. Allowed me to get a good purchase on the end while I ratcheted the nut off the other end. After a bit of heave ho it finally came lose.

Also set about the bearing retainer itself in both hubs. I have to admit I got a bit medieval on them to get them out but success - both out, without any damage to the hubs

I've also despoked the front and rear wheels and put the hubs to one side ready to be bead blasted.  I'm a little unsure as to what rims to go for at the moment, previous CR builders suggestions welcome.  I think it's more about tyre choice and costs than anything else really, what has everyone else gone with?  I like the Sun rims but they're mega bucks

Some immediate things to take care off:

Rebuild the front forks once the rechromed stanchuions are back from Philpotts (cheers Trigger for the donor stanchions)
Rebuild the carbs with the rebuild kits I got from Yamiya
Press bronze bushes into the swingarm
Send cases off to be chemically stripped
Continue with the frame mods

After this, I'm gonna start tackling the engine itself - right where's my Plastiguage!!!

Cheers guys, looks like I'll be contacting Philpotts very soon then, you lot on retainers or something with them  ;D

How much do you want for the fork stanchions Trig?

They are freebies , PM or Email me and we can get them picked up from me by Philpots and delivered back to you. This will save some £££ on postage  ;)

That is very kind Trig, cheers, I'll drop you a PM.  I'll get the fuel taps and handle bar grip out to you pronto as well

Cheers for the replies fellas. I was originally thinking of buying new ones as opposed to rechroming as the price wouldn’t be that much different I thought. I’m actually gutted I can’t do something with the oversize stanchions I have here as the chrome is in good nick. Annoyingly my K6 forks (standard length) are the same but the fork lowers on the k1 have a slightly wider internal diameter so using them went out the window.

What sort of state are the ones you have there Trig? Would they need a lot of prep doing to them prior to getting them rechromed.

Also what’s the going rate for rechroming stanchions these days, about £140 odd?

Has anyone on here had any experience with the replacement fork tubes from DS?  I have longer than normal stanchions in my CB750 K1 forks, think they must be chopper parts by the length of them, and wanted to purchase a set of standard length tubes (failing getting the ones I have here machined down and rethreaded - is this an option?).  The tubes I need are the earlier types with the 4 ring grooves at the bottom

Any alternative suppliers appreciated  :D

About 10mm (give or take) longer compared to the K1 swinger.  I've always liked the look of the KTM swing arms with the diamond castings.  Think it's going back on the shelf for now  :)

Was alcohol involved?  ;)

Having bought a basket case previously I stayed well clear but noticed it popped up in the various CB750 searches I randomly have running on ebay constantly

I have to admit though I'm in two minds whether to go down the modern front and rear end route or keep it period

The GSXR/CBR front hubs by Cognito Moto although pricey might be a route I go down at a later point but think I'm going to push on with the standard forks and swinger for now

I also had an old KTM 690 swing arm kicking about the garage that I bought ages ago for a possible project in the future and mocked this up on the CB750 frame itself while I was deluging - I'm not sure myself (ignore the state of the workbench)

Top yoke is coming on at the moment.  I've ground away the lugs from the top and cut off the handlebar mounts and started to grind flat.

Pretty much gone

Just need to drill out the holes, weld them up and then level out and most probably get it powder coated black

On a side note I have a rhino horn yoke that I'm not going to need if anyone is interested?  I'll whack some pics up in the for sale section later today.

Also been working on rebuilding the set of K1 forks I have here.  The fork lowers are coming up nice after a bit of work - still not finished but getting there.

The forks I got from DK had longer stanchions in them than normal (pic below)

As the plating is in good nick on the stanchions themselves does anyone know if its feasible to cut them down and rethread internally, save forking out for a new set of K1 stanchions?

What with Chrimbo and the job situation this project took a serious backseat recently but trying to crack on a bit now.

I’ve started to fit the various bushes to the swing arm as well as get the forks rebuilt and top yoke ground and welded up. I’ve also been working on the transmission cover. Little bits I know but slowly ticking off jobs

Next thing to do is tackle the frame delugging :-)

CB750 / Removing powder coat - best options
« on: November 12, 2017, 07:26:56 PM »
My K1 frame is currently powder coated but I'm not overly happy with the quality.  I inherited it when I bought the basket case itself but they didn't cover off threads and things like that and the general appearance of it is a bit naff.

Now I've got a load of frame mods to do for my CR build so it's going to have to be stripped at some point and I wanted to get an idea on what the best options are.  I've heard using strippers, is  the best way to go (pardon the expression ;), ones specifically that have methanol or something in them, although this could be complete BS.  I did use paint stripper when I was attacking the K3 yoke I have here but that took forever to get the powder coat off.  Obviously sandblasting is probably the way to go but just interested if anyone had any pearls of wisdom.

I also wanted to ask about the inside of the frame itself as I noticed when I moved it there sounded like bits moving around in there. I know they are getting on a bit but is there any way of making sure that the metal is treated inside against corrosion prior to getting the exterior powder coated?

Took to sorting the garage out rather than messing about with bike bits recently but the garage is getting there.  It was a £$%& tip before but at least now I've got some decent work space on the two work benches and bike lift and the bike bits that I was forever tripping over are away in boxes.  The blade is not happy being evicted from its bike ramp perch though.  I need to strip it and give it a deep clean as the guy I bought it off never used it but also never cleaned it either.  It needs all the rear linkage greasing and a proper deep clean.  I'm going to rebuild the front calipers as well I think

That's a find then, it amazes me what people have buried away in sheds and garages.  you hear all sorts of things like thousands of pounds worth of paintings, engineering gear such as lathes etc. be interested to see how your CX comes out, you going for an original resto?
