Other Bikes / Re: CX500 engine
« on: November 10, 2017, 10:51:53 AM »
Interested to see this thread as I have to admit I quite fancy a CX500 at some point along the line.  How much did you pay for yours Ash (if you don't mind me asking) as prices for CX500s can be anything from a couple of hundred quid on eBay to well over a few grand.

Are there any definite things to look out for and check when buying on, other than the usual bike buying bits and pieces? Just thought I'd ask and put the info away somewhere for when (if ever) I decide to get one.

How easy are they to work on as well?

Having just gone through all 5 pages I love this build.  As someone just starting out on their Cr750 journey it's brilliant to be able to draw on all the photos, research, pointers and tips from you lot (as well as drool over the bikes coming together).  I'm a million miles away from finishing mine but really great to see how other people are going about their builds.

Keith - very envious of your work space, it looks spotless.  I've just had a damn good sort out of my garage here (mainly so I can hunt down parts for my build) but most of the time it looks like a bomb's gone off!

If you use a drill that fits in the hex the head will come off doing no damage to the slider and leave the thread in the damper to unscrew when its out

I'll give that a blast Bryan

I just thought it odd that it was in there and no mention of it on the microfiche itself. I originally wanted to get it to do the clean and polish as well but the bugger is well and truly stuck  >:(

It's the main opening to the fork lower (where the fork seal sits) and there is a piston of some sort in there but I didn't think the earlier forks had a piston system but rather a load of other bits and pieces that Hague the same result. There is a K0 set of pistons on the D&K eBay site at the moment so I'm a bit confused, it doesn't take much  ;)

The piston in the K1 lower looks like a later models piston though, that shouldn't be in there should it?

CB750 / K1 fork lower question
« on: November 06, 2017, 10:56:15 AM »
While dismantling some of the forks I have here I noticed that my K1 lowers have the bolt at the bottom of the fork but the schematics I have here don't seem to include it.  I know the K3 onwards had the bolt to hold the piston in place but going by the parts diagram in a K0-K2 fork the bolt wouldn't screw into anything as far as I can see.

I'm not entirely sure if people have drilled out earlier lowers to accommodate K3 internals (there is a lot less to the later internals than the earlier models).  Is that what I have here.

The piston stuck in one of the K1 lowers looks remarkably like the K3 piston itself.

Anyone on here heard of peeps swapping out the internals on the earlier forks?

I've been trying to make some headway with the carbs I have here.  As I have some rebuild kits on order for them at present I needed to get the old needles out of the floats, however looking inside them there was a world of hurt waiting for me with the tiny pan screws that hold the rod mechanism in place.

Now separate to this I'd heard about JIS head screwdrivers and their advantages over Philips heads with old Japanese bikes and having rounded a few of the pan screws in the past I thought I'd have a blast at grinding down a standard Philips to see if it made any difference in getting the screws out.

Wow, is all I can say.  30 seconds on the grinder to take the tip off and angle the 4 edges a little and all 8 screws came out without any drama at all, even the two that were caked in rust or something equally as nasty.  I'm probably preaching to the converted on here as many of you have no doubt already done this but having cursed (a lot) when I've rounded screws in the past this felt like a nice easy win  :)

I want to get the carbs rebuild if possible and then turn my attention to the frame that is currently dangling from the garage ceiling.  I'd like to bolt up some of the rear end and get the forks on, more to see the stance of the bike than anything else as I've only ever seen it in boxes and getting something that resembles a bike, even in these early build stages, will hopefully put a smile on my face and spur me on.

Sounds good, what type of oil jet is in the head ? This will tell you if the head is a good match for the barrels.  Am i working too fast for you  ;D

It looks like I have 4 of the early style heads and two early barrels in the box of bits that I bought, this includes the barrels and head that came off the KO engine itself.  Hopefully these should be ok to go straight on the K1 cases I have here.  It turns out I also have 2 later style heads as well, which I may end up using on the 76/77 engine I have here (at a later date).  The spare engine cases have an engine number of CB750E 2547990, which I believe is an 1976 F2 engine number and not a 76 K as I'd originally thought - can anyone else confirm this?

Pretty sure I have that tucked away in one of my many boxes but mental note made :D

Spot the noob eh?!?

I have two sets of carbs here and neither of them have those numbers stamped on them.  I have a set with 086A on them and a set with 064A.  I believe the 086A are carbs that were used 69-76 but have no idea on the others...anyone?  Perhaps a later CB750F carb?

Brilliant, looks like I potentially have a K1 swingarm to marry up to the K1 frame.

Thanks for the intel guys, really appreciate it

Turns out I have two, the one that was on the K0 cases was an earlier one and I have a spare 'rounded' one that is currently sat on a K6/K7 engine

The bike is a K0/K1 hybrid but the carbs could be from any year as the basket case I bought was just a pile of parts more than anything else.  Going by the schematics on the CMSL website they look to be from either a KO/K1 or possibly later K2 model (checked the K3 images and they look pretty similar - I have no idea on what the differences are across these years).

As for carb number, do you mean out of the bank of four, if so then is was carb 2 and 3 that seemed to have play

The engine number is CB750E 1040029

As for the head and barrels, have absolutely no idea what year they are from, is there any way of finding out?
