CB500/550 / Ignition coil performance test
« on: March 05, 2021, 03:30:59 PM »
On p. 90 of the Shop Manual CB500-550 we find a coil test prescribed (see below). I don't quite understand Fig. 275 that shows three pointed electrodes. Why three and not just two?

Can any of you experts answer the above question, asked on the German forum?
I myself have wondered what it could be, why there is such a price difference and why some elements have a smaller opening engine side. Compare for instance: and

CB500/550 / Anyone using an oscilloscope?
« on: January 17, 2021, 07:58:38 AM »
Just watched a Youtube vid that explained well (finally) what it in essence is and what one can do with it. The vid is British and a relief after watching US vids that usually show someone with a cap in front of a monstrous pick-up truck who adresses you with a lot of 'you guys', goes hysterical about his new toy and where you usually learn... nothing. I wondered if any of you have experience with an affordable handheld automotive oscilloscope and if you find them useful for our bikes.

CB500/550 / What is the word?
« on: January 07, 2021, 09:06:57 AM »
What is the word for the extra 'skin' around the OEM HT plug wires. I need them in black for my spark plug wires, ID 7mm, preferably in silicone quality. I don't know the word (sleeve?), let alone where I can find them. BTW, I don't need them numbered (my bike originally never had them numbered). I just need them as an extra shield against dirt, grease and whatever.

CB500/550 / What says the Haynes manual: '40' or '49'.
« on: September 20, 2020, 06:47:06 AM »
We are in the process of correcting wrong information in the Shop Manual Honda CB500-550, where it mentions 49±1,5 mm on p.8. The Haynes manual (CB350-CB500) in Chapter 2. Fuelsystem however says: 40 mm ± 1,5 (§8), at least it does so in the Dutch edition. Now the info in the Honda Shop manual is clearly incorrect. It's either in that fig. 5 or that 49mm. But is Haynes right? Did Haynes knowingly correct the wrong info in the Honda manual or is that '40' a typo? Can any of you look up what the English edition says? Thanks a lot.

CB500/550 / What is a realistic lifespan for a CB500/550 camchain?
« on: June 04, 2020, 04:33:27 PM »
If I'm not mistaken, my camchain has reached the end of its lifetime. Again! This one has done 56.000kms (35.000 miles) and because it was already the 3rd, it has always received the prescribed care by me (even more!). Why are chain and/or tensioner so crappy? I wonder what experience you guys have. In other words: what is a realistic lifespan for such a camchain? Any tricks to prolong its lifespan. Do some brands like Tsubaki perform better than stock (DID)?

What gloves do you guys use to protect your hands when doing maintenance? Vinyl, latex, nitril?

CB500/550 / Nice and original CB500K2-ED

CB500/550 / How OEM is this bracket?
« on: January 19, 2020, 07:57:30 AM »
I consider ordering this exhaust bracket from CMSNL: Looking at the number, you'd say it must be original, but the picture shows a bracket that is a bit unlike the OEM I have. The one in the pic is a bit round where my old OEM one is slightly more edgy. Now I'm confident the bracket in the pic will be compatible with the newly reproduced CB500 mufflers, but will it also fit my old OEM exhaust? More in general what is the policy in denoting original parts numbers with aftermarket parts at DS and CMSNL?

My seat cover is worn and I consider ordering this one from David Silver: Any of you that knows about the quality?

CB500/550 / Redex
« on: April 28, 2019, 10:27:13 AM »
Was in the UK to do some sailing (Solent). When it was my turn to do the shopping, I spotted Redex 2 shot bottles in a local Asda. If I understood it well, the 250 ml is good for 4 tank fillings.
I say, that's not bad for £ 3,-.

CB500/550 / Are there O-ring chains that do not rub?
« on: March 18, 2019, 12:56:59 PM »
A few days ago I've asked the German site (both the CB500 and CB550 sections) what experience they have with various sealed chains (both O-ring and X- ). I will also ask the French and Italian site. I hope to report more on this in the foreseeable future. Sofar a German CB500 owner claims he has good results with a DID-VX.
I quote him in translation:
... My old chain had a 25mm width which had milled a bit of the casing. The DID-ZVMX has 24,9mm width and would also rub...
Another CB500 owner had reported he has good results with this ZVMX type [explanation Deltarider]
... That's why I went for the DID-VX which has a width of only 23,3mm and this chain runs just free. One can even get a 2/10 feeler gauge in between, when chain is fully pushed towards the casing.
I'd like to add the following remarks.
There could be a difference in clearances between the CB500 and CB550 models and even between the various CB550 models, K and F.
Both the CB500 and CB550 models can develop considerable play at the rear wheel sprocket carrier which may have an effect on the drivechain's trajectory. Please report your findings, positive and negative.

CB500/550 / Little filters in the carbs?
« on: February 06, 2019, 12:26:05 PM »
It's at least 35 years ago that I opened my carbs out of curiosity. Now I seem to remember that, after I had removed the brass valve seats, that in the holes where they sit, there was... what was it? Was it a little very fine gauze filter, was it some felt or was it just accumulated dust? It's not in the exploded view.
