Suppose I have obtained a second petrol tank and side panels for my motorcycle that are a different colour to the original. I want to enjoy the options, but do I have a legal issue with the bikes documents now?
-
You're supposed to change the details on the V5.
-
Yes, the V5 states what colour the bike is. Unless you change your V5 every time you fancy a swap, your bike will be listed as the incorrect colour.

Weirdly it's viewed as one of the risk factors in insurance underwriting it seems.
So one colour may have a higher or lower risk profile than another.
It's one of those odd things that statistics may throw up from raw data, but have no bearing on driver attitude.

Oh, and you'll just be going faster if it's red ;D

My mother told me in the 1960s that a red Jaguar was more expensive to insure than a white one because it was felt those who wanted red one were more aggressive drivers!

If you get pulled by the long arm of the law, just tell them it is temporary as you original tank is away for repair ;)
I have a log book with the colour down as unknown ???

It's quite funny that it's fairly archaic in many respects.
A friend asked his insurance company about modifying his car with different carb and exhaust, they sent him an invoice for additional cost to continue policy, he informed them that he wasn't going to proceed with mods, they then requested a vehicle engineer's report to confirm the standard status of the vehicle at his cost, without which they'd cancel the policy :)

I once had an advisory on an MOT as my 500 was listed as black but had red paint.
Not that I ever did anything about it.
This was about 10 years ago - not the 70s

There is an option during an MoT to change the colour of the vehicle if the liated colour differs from the actual colour of the vehicle. If you MoT your bike, it is possible that the colour will be changed at that stage

Isn't there a test card it could be compared with? :o

You can get those odd colours like this

Someone had one of those at work, appeared different any time the light changed during the day.

You must have super vision Mick, but it is true, there are not many faithful black and neutral finishes. Guess you see that sort of thing in your business too.
I was working in photographic industry as digital cameras got going into consumers, we reliably had complaints from people with those blue Subaru, which all came out slightly purple from most of the early cameras. It was related to how much infra red light the paint reflects but not visible to our eyes. The camera chip was supposed to be screened for IR but clearly not sufficient to exclude it so it then forms part of the ongoing image.
Wedding photos are like that too with synthetic coloured fabrics on bridesmaids coming out odd in final print. Along with bright underwear visible through white fabrics when flash (has alot of IR content) pings them and they record what's being worn. A right pain to try and explain. Conversation starting with "so, you were wearing synthetic underwear" don't usually make for the best in customer service. :)
