Is there an easy way to remove the coating on my rear wheel sprocket cover at home?
Not sure tbh but I think it is Chrome but could be BZP would Harpic 10 remove the coating?

Get it blasted and powder coated black. They were black on the later 550's ;)

Harpic won't touch it ... you need something like 40% strength sulphuric acid with a bit of glycerine added and reverse plate it at about 10 amps in that acid with lead as the other electrode .. mainly to remove the nickel under the chrome. A chrome plater will also remove by reverse plating in the chrome bath and it's fairly cheap.

What does the glycerine do Ash?

Not sure but it's what all of the platers use. Sure Google will tell you Ted.

I’ll have a look, cheers Ash

Well my sprocket plate has been in "Flow Rust Remover" overnight, it has turned Yellowish in colour as has the solution that was pink.

you have probably just converted the chrome layer. It's the nickel that's hard to remove.

I have managed to remove two of the dents on the flat section but the plate is off round near the outer rim curve & I do not have the right tools to re-shape it.
Can't powder coat in as it is but could just paint it.

I sprayed mine with a can of hammerite smooth gold I had knocking around. Came out great but needed a good few days on a widow sill to fully cure. Can't see that much of it once sprocket is fitted.

Good point Dave I might do something similar.

Just not brown Ted!
