Thats great, thanks very much
My cables have broken away from the bolt but still making contact
I had problems starting my bike (using the electric starter) because I believe the bad connection was draining electrical power not leaving enough to create a spark across the plugs
Always starts OK with the kickstarter
Took me a few years to work that one out!!

Hi, does anyone have any photos (or schematics) of the inside of a 400/4 starter motor where the power cable bolt connects to the windings? My through bolt is loose and turns when I tighten the nut on the outside Starter motor works but the windings only rest against the through bolt (not soldered) Should there be nuts both side of the casing to hold the bolt/stud securely? Thanks!

Hello Everyone Enjoying working on my 400/4 in the sun setting up the carbs and timing I've had the advance/retard unit in bits and now back together and on the bike However I've come across a 0.1mm thick shim (23mm OD x 15mm ID) on my workbench and wondered if I missed during the reassembly Does anyone have a photo breakdown of the unit? Thanks

Thanks for response
Also have a question regarding setting up of the slides
Honda manual says should be 0-1mm from top of inlet port when throttle wide open
Not easy to adjust while holding throttle open against the spring, is there a measurement you can take from the bottom of the inlet when the throttle is closed?
I seem to recall someone using 1.5mm drill bits to measure this gap, is this right?
Thanks

Well, got my carbs back together after fitting new genuine jets, etc. form Mr Silver!
Have a question regarding set-up of the choke
When open should the choke flaps fully cover the inlet port or is there a particular way of setting them up?
Thanks!

No, carb strip was to clean and re-plate some external fittings
Ran fine before strip so I think something on re-assembly not right

Hi, Have owned my 400/4 since 1990 and always been a good starter That was until I totally stripped down the carb assembly! Now takes ages to get going normally with throttle opened When started it runs fine Seems like the choke is not working even though butterflys close and tops lift when apply choke What should I be looking for on carb set-up? Carbs currently sat on my work bench and all checks so far have yielded nothing Help Thanks Neil

After struggling (again) to fit the airbox to my CB400F I wondered if anyone has a fitting technique that works?
Had my bike nearly 30 years now and I dread every time I get to this part of the re-assembly!!
Thanks!

I use silver hammerite
Gives great protection plus still looks original i.e. chrome (from a distance!)

Hi Dave, I read through your suggestions and wondered if any had made a particular difference I want to do all the checks, etc. before reassembling the engine again Like I said all my bearings seem OK but I will focus more on the clutch as noise seems more pronounced when being slipped I've had my noise for a while and bike runs OK but always the nagging thought in the back of my head I'll keep looking over the engine and if anything comes up I'll be sure to post Thanks

Hi everyone I've just joined the forum and currently have my 400/4 engine in bits Reason for strip is a whine from the clutch/gearbox when under load in gear I've seen a few threads and even a Youtube clip with the exact same noise Has anyone found a reason for this noise yet? I've quickly checked all my bearings and gears/cogs and all seem fine Only issue I have is the first gear seems loose on the shaft but not sure what tolerances apply Any help anyone can give to resolve this noise would be much appreciated!
