Misc / Open / Anyone got a 550K3 pull throttle cable handy?
« on: January 05, 2022, 08:57:46 PM »
I seem to recall that the K3 pull cable is far longer than the CB500/550 ones due to the PD carbs and the position of the butterfly. I'm looking to see if my memory is correct, I need to know after all the cable is pulled out at the bottom (carb end) how much inner cable is showing, I can then compare that with the standard cable and see what if any the difference is.

If you've got the push cable handy same measurement would be great thanks.

I'm trying to reduce the amount of throttle movement is required and this will help me work out the mod, one mod is at the handlebar end and one at the carb end, unfortunately the carb end ones won't work on the K3, well not unless you can adapt it but the handlebar end is ok for all the SOHC fours are far as I know. Once it's done I'll pass on the details, the handlebar one already works and reduces full opening by 8-10mm. It's a fairly cheap mod (around £10-15) and requires no real mechanical ability.

You look ever so familiar Al, you ever worked in the North West?

No problem, always worth an ask.

The indicators BTW are for the USA market, not sure if your using them on the build but if you are you could consider going back to the UK spec ones, just look at any pic of a UK 550 and you'll see what I mean. The USA market also got a different right hand switchgear, there is no headlight flasher switch like the UK one, it's just a horn button and not a combined flasher/horn combined. You may also find the indicators are running lights, not allowed over here but easy to disconnect.

The grab rail looks wrong, it should be much higher at the back, or it could be the seat is sitting far too high at the back,  tail light bracket was black in the Uk not chrome. None of these is detrimental to the bike, it's just info you may not know.

Any pics of the left side, if it still has the original exhaust that's a BIG bonus and they are rare and expensive to buy.

I have a couple of NOS rear brake levers if yours is damaged or really rusty.

Clean the frame of powder coat round the areas the harness uses for earthing. The upper left hand engine hanger and the front upper mounting point for the coils are the 2 main ones.

Check the rear drum liner carefully for cracking, they are renowned for that. You can get them relined however.

Look at the coil leads, see if they've gone hard and brittle, if so think about doing the Ashimoto mod (search the forum) on them rather than buying new ones.

Are you using the fork ears? if not contact Laverdaroo as he's looking for a decent pair. (aren't we all  ;D ;D ;D) He's also after a decent chainguard if your not using that.

I have quite a few bits for the 500/550 if your looking for some stuff.

Welcome BTW. What paint scheme are you thinking of.

Now that's my idea of a bike, you can keep your CB72 and 160s, the 250K0 was when Honda started to produce proper motorbikes IMO. Lovely.

I like the blue Roy.

I've got a NOS side panel in Flake Sunrise Orange and in the flesh it's not as nice as I expected. The flakes seem quite large and reflect the thinking of the late 70s when lot of really paints appeared with huge flakes that made the paint look rough to the touch.

Looks enough metal on the other spring to make another loop to match the F2 spring Roo. Just find something the right diameter to bend it round.

Doesn't really matter about the lobes Roo, they will be repaired as the difference is made to them.

As for the spring, get the part you need glowing red, bend it into the new shape and let cool, you should be able to adapt the K3 spring to match the F2 one I reckon with a little work, replate afterwards.

Not far from me that, I've been past that hundreds of times as well. My daughter will love that.

Where is that Martyn?

My daughter loves Lizards so she'd be made up visiting that place.

I’m aware of that but unlike red grease it really doesn’t have much in the way of lubricating factors, in this case red grease is a better answer. Now the bolt holding the brake arm onto the pivot pin is perfect for copperslip.

Copper grease isn't really a lubricating grease though, it's more of an anti seize grease for threads to stop galling etc.

I was wrong, memory is starting to fail  ;D 10 psi for the forks and he says fit 3 washers (but doesn't say how thick they are) in the forks so they effectively preload the springs. So I'd say say 5-10mm of preload. My springs are mismatched in length, so what I'm thinking is to fit the springs etc, no preload at all, place a heavy weight on the top of the fork top, maybe my old vice, measure to see how far it compresses the fork and mark it. Do the other fork and then match the preload so they both compress the same distance. Not sure if that's the correct way but it makes some sort of sense.

Trim those screws into the inlet manifolds, measure the bores of them all and see if they match, if not make them match, smooth out any casting marks, rough spots etc. Should get another 5bhp doing that without affecting engine response.

If you want a little more power, get the cam lobes modified, no more lift, just more duration. So 5 degrees of overlap and 10 degrees of duration. Engine won't be cammy with such a mild mod. Think I have a spare cam so may just try that one.

Red grease should be ok, it's high temp.
