Tricks & Tips / Cam Chain Adjusting
« on: May 13, 2008, 12:38:46 PM »
OK there are many different methods in Honda manuals for adjusting the cam chain but here is a method i have used for 30+ years which works as long as the tensioner is operating as it should and the camchain still has useable life.

(1) Find a method of turning the crankshaft, this can be
    (a) Kickstart
    (b) spanner on nut on end of crank
    (c) rotating back wheel in gear

Or any other none destructive method you can find.

(2) Put pressure onto your turning method so that the engine is just about to turn but not quite turning.

(3) This is the difficult bit, Whilst holding that engine possition loosen the cam chain adjuster locking bolt/nut and re-tighten. That is the bolt/nut that actualy locks the tensioner not the one that stops the lock undoing!

If the chain is stilll noisy try again in a different position, if its still noisy either the adjuster is siezesd or at its limit and/or the camchain needs replacing.

Have fun.

Those punch marks are standard on all Hondas and it actualy tells you in the Honda manual to drill them out before removing the retainer.

You can salvage the hubs with patience and a thread file but will probably need new retainers

Seal from any Honda dealer as they are only 2-3 pound so DSS discount dont cover postage, if you need a piston as well then go DSS cos he is cheaper

You cant fit the F2 discs to the earlier wheel and the F2 calipers wont fit the earlier legs, I believe, but havent tried it, that you can fit the complete wheel; muguard;legs fron an early one to the F2 yolks although i think it will alter the handling as i think they are a different length overall.
As to the rear by making/adapting spacers it should be possible but the F1 runs 530 chain and the F2 630 and i dont think the sprockets swop OR the carriers.

If you want to get away from the comstars i have a pair of cast Lesters(I think) for an F2 complete with discs, spindles etc.
These can be "hagled" for as i dont have, and have no intention of having, an F2

Steve, my local tester has been jumped on by the man from the ministry who sez that the exhaust must be as quiet as a similar bike "IN STANDARD CONDITION" with a non rotted exhaust.

This relaces the BS number regulation---I had one customer argue that one till i pointed out the BS number he had was chrome quality NOT noise standard!!!

The only one i know that pass "out of the box" are Motad all the others require insertion of fiberglass!!!
