Title: Aladdin's Cave
Post by: SteveD CB500K0 on March 23, 2016, 02:39:45 PM
I have been thinking about how best to present a library of useful documents and articles.

How about something like this: http://info.sohc.co.uk ?

It needs some imagery (backgrounds, logo etc) but I've used this system on other websites and it works well as a download manager.

What do you think?

Ash - replace or in parallel with your dropbox?

Steve

PS: I've only dropped a couple of files in the 500 and 750 categories to test it out...

Bring it on Steve ! Sounds like a brilliant idea.

Looks good to me.
Not sure whether we would still need Ash's Dropbox (which has been very useful), the new page would probably become the first place to look.
Personally I'd be happy with the page pretty much as is, maybe just a logo or something at the top.

  agrees,

maybe a link at the top of the site heading, next to donations- Logout etc

I could leave the large files in Ash's Dropbox and just link to them (see example in CB750 Mega Download). This will save server storage space, but:
- assumes Ash's Dropbox will always be there
- storage is cheap (it's bandwidth that is expensive)

No plans to delete my Dropbox links as I use the files myself,  all of the time. e.g if I am work and see something on eBay I can easily refer to part no.s in those manuals. they are all from other sites but they sometimes disappear ,such as the Service Bulletins on the USA site. I get the feeling that those SB's originated from Bryan anyway :)

To start with yes. It's a lot of work to transfer files and test links.

Maybe expand it later.

I have got quite a few scan articles of 70's  road tests etc.  but the files are massive so I need James to convert them to .pdf for me. I tried to give him direct access to my Dropbox but couldn't suss out how to do it. Also is it just me but I can't seem to put an image in a PM.

most were mine but some came from a us member, luckily I printed out my missing ones so have what I think is a full set, it's the service letters that are interesting, I keep promising to scan them and send a cd to ash but 60+ hour work weeks get in the way

No Ash, I'm pretty sure it's not just you.
Only way seems to be to get the email address of the member and send the image that way.

There is a little icon though which suggest you can insert an  image but does nothing and its exactly the same on the USA .net site.

What icon is that Ash?
If I click on the little envelope at the bottom of your details at the left of a post I get the Send Email page, but all I get is a little box for the email subject and a bigger one for the message plus the 'Send' button. I think that has always been how it has been for me.

You can't attach an image to a PM - it's not an email, although it does send an email notification. You can insert an image but only if it is hosted somewhere (ie you insert the url between the IMG tags and the image will appear in the body of the message).

The send email icon just uses the forum's rudimentary email programme - it's not like using Outlook.

Hi Steve,

I can't add anything to this debate, but love the concept of the SOHC library. Current version looks great.

Can anyone upload suitable documents or only you as administrator?

Cheers and thanks, D.

It's a Wordpress site Drew, so I could elevate anyone who is prepared to help so that they could add files to the site.

Volunteers?

I don't have much raw material, but I have used Wordpress before and so happy to help if I can. Cheers, D.

I volunteer, I can scan and convert to PDF my manuals; I have a couple, a FSM  for the 350F and the 1971 CB500/4 with the blue cover. including the Haynes manuals though I'm not sure about the copyright aspect of some of material? ..

I'm off to Florence for a week in the morning (that's the place in Italy - not Steve in Somerset...)

When I get back, I'll be in touch with all the eager volunteers and set you up as admins on the info site.

Happy days!

Steve

New menu item: "Aladdin's Cave" just to the left of the Logout button.

Now all we need is a bunch of happy admins to help fill it with treasure!

That's just brilliant - well done to everyone who has helped to set it up and populate it with gold dust info.

£10 donated to the sohc fund as a token of my appreciation.

Wow . . . been a while since anyone was in this thread.

Couldn't find an answer to this - hence the thread resurrection - so apologies if it's covered somewhere else.  Do you accept donations to the Cave (as in copies of PDFs/images/whatever) and if you do, how does the donations process work?  Like what sort of stuff do you accept/what don't you want - and where does it go?

You've already got most of the CB750 stuff I have, but I've got a bunch of other, older Honda materials (CA/CL77, SL350, CB450) that could do with going somewhere more people can make use of them.  Also got some newer stuff that I reckon would be less popular (SL1100, Honda CB-1, maybe Hayabusa) but might help.

Anything welcome with thanks ... just send me a link to the file or email me it via PM if it's not too big.
If you want me to scan it that's a bit different as I think we would need to be selective. Some manuals are easy because they are not bound and can be separated into the individual pages to auto-feed scan at work.
Others are a pain as they can't be auto-scanned.

One scan we are short of on here is the Genuine Honda CB450K0 Bomber Shop Manual .. we only have the later 5-speed manual. (The Parts Book is on here already though).
