Title: Donations
Post by: SteveD CB500K0 on May 21, 2014, 05:18:06 PM
Now that we have a sexy new server with all bells and whistles working, I have installed a couple of extra plug-ins (and more soon!).

One of them is the "Donations" plugin which you will see in the menu next to "Members".

I have never asked for donations before, but speaking to Glenn Stauffer on sohc4.net, he manages to almost completely offset his hosting costs due to the generosity of the members there.

The new host is more expensive than the last (but worth it!) - so I am respectfully asking for help from the good members of this forum.

[I will continue to run the forum whatever - but every little helps!]

Steve

Bitsa.

I need to know when you get the white-screen-of-death (hereinafter to be known as "WSoD") - what were you trying to do at the time etc?

Try out the "Donations" button - it's linked to PayPal (and I need to test it!)

OK.  Got it.

Just needed to give everyone else access privileges!

It's difficult sometimes as I can see everything by default - maybe I need to set up a "test user" account...

steve, Why is PayPal taking a cut?

yeah... tax avoiding dirty multinational pigs ... thats near £2.50 they've scammed off three donationas already. Dont they have a "donate" / "gift" option that means you can avoid the fees ?

They are thieving bastards. They know that they have the "best" online payments system and are determined to make their fortunes.

eBay (who own PayPal) turned over $212 Billion last year.

You can still send money to individuals using the "I'm sending money to family or friends" feature, but its only free if you pay from your PayPal balance or debit card.
If you pay from your credit card they charge 20p + 3.4%

I haven't been on much lately, but a few quid donation is cheaper than a yearly magazine subscription. Just think of all the information you have here on tap!

Hi,
Just tried to donate, and Paypal refused to pay due to my access point not being recognised and was a security risk, that is my only ever refusal as a certified user, which end of the equation is suspect?

It's a standard portal that I've used on websites and ecommerce platforms before. I'm sure that if it was a bug there'd be chat about it on the dev forum (there isn't)

Well I'm a bit embarrassed about this.

You lot are so generous.

Bottom line. The site costs about £100+VAT per year to host. My time is the same as yours (free...)

Proposal: How about we run up to £120 and then I close the feature - reopen this time next year?
That way all those that have contributed know that they are supporting the site and not just buying me beer!

Steve...

I am indebted to everyone who's written on this site... I cannot begin to calculate the time / effort / cash the members have saved me. Thank you all... a small donation was money well spent.

But to yourself...the time you give makes the above pale somewhat... so please, take any excess cash & treat yourself; beers, weekend break with the missus.. whatever.

Any groans and offer to pass the job on.. that'll shut 'em up!

Cheers & a genuine thanks,
Simon

On other forums there is a sliding bar to show costs covered at the top of the page. When the total is reached the rest is a bonus for you Steve within reason anything after that is used for competitions and group meets.

I'm a whiskey man myself...

A litre of Paddy's from Shannon duty free was my only perk when I was a corporate airmiles clone in the 80s/90s.

Company 5 Series = gone
BUPA = gone
Big salary = gone

but

Flying around Europe 5 days per week = gone
BA 06:30 from Heathrow on a Monday morning = gone
Missing the kids birthdays = gone

Happier (but poorer)

Hi Guys
Just paid my tenner - not as active on the site but if you solve one problem a year using all you guys knowledge and experience, its worth a tenner of any ones money. And for someone to facilitate the forum is fantastic.
Thanks to all
Phil

That's what Steve Swan of the SandcastOnly site does for donations, he has a target to achieve and then informs everyone when he has got enough donated.
This site is unique in that it's UK based and you feel you are dealing with a bunch of mates you could ask  all sorts of bike and non bike related subjects.

Here here to this sentiment. I have greatly reaped the benefit of this site's access to expertise, advice and sources of parts. That is worth at least one donation.

It would be good to know if and when you need specific funding (e.g. for web hosting, licenses, etc.).

I'm sure plenty of people would miss this site greatly if it disappeared for whatever reason.

Keep up the good work,

D. (thank you)
