Title: Painter
Post by: Bro550F on September 21, 2022, 06:47:54 PM
Hi,

Can anyone recommend a reliable, painter in the North West of England for a quick turn around on a side panel to match this one.

I have a new black plastic one to be painted and decal applied.

Unfortunately. In my experience. The words. Reliable & quick turn around. Do not sit well when referring to painters.
With the exception of Menno, of course.
But in the NW. More chance of platting soot.

The guy who has done all my bikes (I supplied the correct paint) is based in Wrightington not far from you. I don't know his work load but normally a few weeks for a tank/panel set.
Message me and I'll give you his details

Hiya

I had my bike painted by Sean Dewis ( who is ex Dream machine ) he is based in Derby and is on the same trading estate as the transfer guy he not quick but does a very good job and is a lot cheaper Dream Machines.

Seaman's also had his tank and panels done at the same time as me . There was a 4-8 wk waiting list but its worth the wait ( Tank and panels was £350 last year  )

Just as a guide I had to buy some paint from RS paints last month for my side panel that I lost a couple of months ago.  250ml is the smallest amount you can get from RS so had to buy 500ml in TOTAL as you probably know you have to apply a number of undercoats to give you the depth of colour required to match the colour of the rest of the bike 250ml of undercoat & 250ml of top coat (500ml in total) was £75.00 😭..... (it eye watering  expense ). I will certainly ensure the panels are secured  firmly on next time.......

Hope this helps you

Just one word of warning. My paint job is ‘custom’ in that Sean colour matched the original paint and mixed his own formulation. If a customer insists on RS Paints as a source the price will rise significantly. Also note that these were 2021 prices, so an increase is inevitable.

One piece of advice. Do as much preparation yourself as possible, right down to 800 grade if possible. Then clean your tank, properly. Then clean it again and flush with deionised water, dry and follow up with a diesel rinse. The easier you make it for Sean, the quicker the turn round.

How much paint should you need for side panels and tank? I was looking at RS paints earlier this week and idly wondering how much I would need for an F- model orange  paint.

It sounds like:
500ml - undercoat and 500ml top coat for 2x side panels?
How much for the tank though?

500ml of both sounds a humongous amount of paint to me, especially for 2 side panels 🤔🤔🤔. I'll send a message to Menno and ask him.

Just remember your RS paint comes ready mixed to pour into spray gun. So if you order for instance 500ml of top coat that is 500ml of mixed/thinned. Sorry if I’m stating the obvious.

Hi, the colour is candy presto red.

I cannot recommend a reliable painter in the UK because I don't know amy painters in the UK.

I can imagine not many painters want to do one sidecover in the first place; lots of work and quite difficult.

RS paint is known on the continent as a rather poor quality paint provider.
If I need to use RS paint I always paint a sample and copy that sample with the paints I use (mostly Sikkens).

How much paint you use depends on the painter. I had a Harley Davidson dealer call me because their painter used 2 Cans of RH paint (German) to paint a tank and 2 covers. I do 2 sets with 1 Can (375ml).
For 2 sidecovers I probably would need 30 grams of metallic  and about 60 grams of candy. Maybe 2 layers so 2 paintthroughs 2nd one maybe 40 gram. I don't know how much stone that is.

If you want to paint a F1 in orange (Flake orange?) I would use 100 grams of silver metallic base (2 different layers), 3 large teaspoons of flake mixed into 60 grams clear (mixed with harder and thinner - so total 108 gram), then candy orange, 2 times 2 layers 228 grams, Lining 3 gram or so and 2 times 2 layers of clear - 216 grams of clear.

Just to add my 'unproffesional' opinion, I have used RS paints for Planet Blue, Candy Ruby Red, Candy Topaz Orange and Candy Gold for my 500 (can't recall the exact colour name without getting my records out) - via my painter, it was excellent quality

I don’t want to get into a paint quality debate cos I know Jack about paint! But I have had a number of orders from RS paints and found them very helpful regarding advice on quantity’s etc,  and have found no problem with their product.

As someone who works with paints on a daily basis I can say that all providers of these 70's lookalike paints have their 'problems'.

In Germany there is RH. It is a company with a very large product range.
Their base colours are ok. No problem whatsoever with that.
Their candys though are very watery. Very difficult to paint with - especially when you work with them the first time.
So if someone would want to work with their candy paint I would recommend to take some distance and do very thin layers to prevent paint running. I have no experience with their service - cannot say anything about that.

In the Uk there is RS. They also have a large product range.
My experience is that their paint is not very consistent. My advise is when using to paint a probe to see how the paint reacts.
I have no experience with their service either - cannot say anything about that

Now from  my point of view I don't like to work with either ones product. I mix my own candies which has a lot of advantages for me.

My remark on the quality of the paints from RS is in comparisment with other paints available. If RS were my only choice, I would work with that.

In the end I am trying to have a bit of fun and creativity in what I do. Most surely I could also do this with RS paint.
But imagine I had to buy every colour for a project like this:...

Very nice work there Menno. I bet masking up was great fun ;D
Credit where credit is due, you did an amazing job on my CB250RSA paint especially considering the Honda blue metalic was so difficult to replicate (I think you had to use a Porsche base colour and probably explains why my bike is sooooo fast 8))

Yes indeed! Nice display of different Honda colours there! Actually might work with matching side panels?😂

Yes, our Forum sponsor, Redice, (Piki on the forum, vreal name Diego Corral) makes them for us. I'm sending him a message in a minute anyway, so I'll get him to pop in on the forum.
