Other Bikes / Re: MotoGuzzi 1200 Sport

Mick,

I've a 2011 MotoGuzzi Griso SE, 1200, 8v. (I paid £7800 @ 1 yo)

A totally impulsive buy... no logic, just smitten.

I'm not a seasoned biker, and can't qualitively comment upon its handling etc. Frankly tho', any modern bike's handling will be way beyond my capabilities....
It's not very practical... I reckon I get 33 mpg... on a weeny tank. By 110 miles it's flashing its thirsty light at me. The horn switch is oddly placed; I reckon I'd never find it in anger.
No ABS, no traction control, no self cancelling indicators... ie unrefined.
I don't do enough miles to need spares, but do get the feeling it won't be as easy as my 40yo CB750.
Certainly oil changes (on the 8v Griso) are easy with spin off filter. The shaft drive is easy to drain / replenish. Tappets are easy. Rest of it needs a computer geek...
(Bryan had a point tho' .... earlier models were rather involved oil change wise. Also, in the back of my mind there was an engine 'issue' on the earlier 8v models... 'soft valves' / cam issues I think)
I can't knock the build quality... seems beautifully put together / finished. Consequently I have no reason to doubt its reliability.
Wheels black powder.
Lots of beautiful brushed alloy... not much chrome to be honest. (down pipes only thing that comes to mind)
Superb brakes &  clear instrumentation.
Mine has a leather seat... classy.
The drive train is a bit snatchy in 1st gear, it rolls with throttle....
I suspect a BMW rider might pull his nose at it.
But I just love it /  bloody grin on every outing....

Simon

(Steve - why my pics upside down??? I'm posting from Oz... but surely this ain't the reason!!!)

Glad it's sorted Dave...

I barely know what an m-unit is... can you enlighten me / us, what 'advantages' etc is it giving you on an old SOHC?

Not knocking it at all.... it's simply new to me!

Hi Drew,

Agree with Frisky..

The 400F has 3 fuses; Main 15A plus Head & Tail lamps. (7A each)

I think you might have mislaid (!) the female half of the 2 pin block connector .... the mini-loom that connects the large +ve  battery post of the starter solenoid to the main bike loom.... ie that hanging loose 2 pin connector.

If it is not in place, and you've lost it, simply take a foot of (red / 15A wire) and to each end crimp / solder female (I think) QUALITY spade connectors. Then fold it in half, carefully cut away (midpoint)  3/4" of insulation & inset / solder / solidly crimp this into an eye connector .... & secure onto the battery post of the starter solenoid. Plug those two (female?) spades into your free-floating block connector - and ensure those two female spades are absolutely insulated from possibly touching anything else. (This block connector should by the way, secure into a frame clip below the starter solenoid area.)

The wiring diagram a great help & gratefully stolen from Bodd; the pic my 400F which shows that block connector going up to the solenoid / battery. (follow the RH (black sheathed) wire from the starter solenoid down)

Hi Graham... yea, thought that, but also thought it was being passed off as a UK machine. (or did the K1s not get exported here?)

Bloody hell,

I don't think mine are like that Steve... 2011 vintage thereabouts. I don't have the original instructions with them, but to be honest they did seem to heat up with the bike otherwise dead... not impressed with that.

Hi Tom!  When you come home from 30 degs all day-every-bloody-day them heated grips get used whenever it dips below ... er.. 20 degs!

Seriously, I asked the PO to take 'em off & put the original grips back.... couldn't. But to be honest I do quite like 'em.... most of my riding is in the cool summer evenings... wish I'd had them 30 yrs ago instead of the heavy leather gloves with 12v liners / wires up my back / arms etc etc!

Those Sunday eve trips over the Penninnes... in all bloody weathers, leaving 'mum' with fresh washing for another week at BAe Warton... what joy!

The Allen screws are so bloody disappointing given the effort & expense otherwise done. Makes you kinda wonder.  I'm no K1 eert, but is the rear lamp holder meant to be black (UK) or indeed chrome?

My Guzzi had Oxford grips professionally fitted (by the dealer's 16 yo son it looked) and it amazed me that they're just hot-wired to the battery. Yup, I read, they have a cut-out voltage ... but asking for trouble it seems.

Now rewired through a relay which is held on with ignition... ie every time you turn the bike off the heaters trip to OFF and need positively selecting ON again.

An hours job but well worth the effort.

Ash, that looks a big & useful cleaner. Mine was small & useless.. my fault for not researching it enough.

I too have had that powdery effect when cleaning... thought "warnings labels are for wasters" & applied oven cleaner to my 400's hubs. (on the bench). 30 mins later removed it & found a cleanish but oxidised finish which had actually taken away the finish. £40 to get it polished - dang. (But it looks fantastic now)

Ya live & learn....

I'm not convinced... it'll sit on a shelf... and be dud when you need it. (well, in my garage anyways). With cars / other bikes in the family all you need is a set of jump leads surely.

Admittedly great for rescues... but only if no other vehicles about. And chance of that....?

Dave, and standing by to be corrected by folk with genuine hands-on experience.. Bryan etc

The earlier Hondas did not have the start interlock, and were more likely wired as per the top pic, ie the starter switch simply grounding the starter solenoid... which was fed with +12v from the ignition (Black wire). This is what you were hoping for; your manuals suggest - but alas hasn't transpired.

I'm guessing your (later) Honda is wired as per the lower diagram... in that the starter switch now feeds 12v to the starter relay ONLY when you press it. The other side of the starter relay is grounded... but only when the clutch is pulled in to complete the circuit. Bottom line, there is NEVER a 'permanent' (ie ignition switched) live supply at the starter relay. (as borne out by the lack of a black wire)

If your bike IS per the lower diagram, you'll need to go elsewhere for this live feed to your rec/ reg unit and basically any black wire in the loom should do. As I suggested earlier though, do first check it is indeed +12v at ignition ON.

Please appreciate Bryan's comments re frying your m-unit... all my guff above is basic Honda... I have not considered any inclusion of this 'm-unit'

Surely the manufacturer can give specific guidance?

Dave,

You don't state your bike.... assume its a good old 70's Honda?

On these bikes the black wire is an ignition switched live.... ie will be +12v, but only when the ignition is on.

It'll feed many things.... juice to (somewhere) in the starter circuit, the indicator switches, to the brake light switch, the horn circuit... and so on. It'll also supply 12v to the regulator.... which I (think) is your question. So, (and assuming your harness spec) connect this rec/reg black to any black on the Honda. (wouldn't be a bad idea to check first though the bike black is indeed 12v + at ignition ON)

The Hondas were often wired differently, according to model / market & year. Eg on some the stater magnetic switch was earthed by the start button.... and on others it was fed +12v by the start button.
If your bike is the former... then it'll have a nice ignition switched 12v+ to it ... ie that black wire. (magnetic switch connectors likely BLACK & hatched RED/YELLOW)
If your bike is the latter it may have a continuous striped RED/YELLOW to one side of the starter magnetic switch (12V+ from start button) and GREEN off to the clutch switch interlock.

But you mention a GREEN/RED. The only Green/Red wires I can find are to do with the neutral light... and it's entirely plausible your particular Honda uses this as a start interlock. (I don't have such wiring diagrams) ... In which case neither of the starter magnetic connections will do.. Ie you need to find that BLACK.

Finally, it sounds to me that your using the wrong wiring diagram for you particular bike.  It's bloody frustrating... been there.
With respect to the m-unit I've no idea.. but did find the below.

Treat all I say with caution... I'm no Honda expert! And I say again, no idea about m-units.

Cheers,
Simon

Lovely bikes....my 400F2 was the Ruby red when I got it... often I wish I'd kept the tank / side panels and bought a 2nd Parakeet set... to enjoy 2x the beauty.(ie rather than having them resprayed)

Hmmm... yes the Internet can be a bit misleading.  BUT, be wary of dismissing info just because it doesn't suit you; if we always go down the route of "I don't like what I'm hearing so it must be rubbish" then we may as well switch off our computers. Rather research further / present data to dispute ... whatever. (Though I do agree about those carbs)

In the case of CB400 frame loops, I remain convinced they're a European spec only, ... Norniron & my (1977 / late American Frame #) bikes are living proof.

Now of course the below may have been concocted from some mislead & mischievous vagabond ... but until hard data is shown otherwise I'll continue to believe it!

Top pic 'European' spec, frame is part #374
Middle pic F,F1 & America.... frame part # 373/375 (& yup there's an addendum page for their later / recessed tank)

Excuse the blue crap... bits I've replaced etc.

Hi Trig,

Wikipedia - agreed, but look 'anywhere' & you'll note 'outside of Europe' never got the loop footrests. Even my parts manual specifies Europe only for these.... yours?

Here's another link I turned up - showing the US (late) versions still on the swing-arm footrests. Note also that their 1978 pictures with "recessed fuel fillers" etc are actually pics of European bikes... ie they have good old chrome filler caps & pretty indicator lenses. (also think I can spot the sideways facing 'European' horn in these pics... and the tail lamp should be chrome?)

Further minor difference exist too - the one good thing I like about my 'yank' bike is the integral steering lock on the ignition.
