CB750 / Rear chain
« on: June 11, 2012, 11:55:28 AM »
Was fitting a chain oiler to my F1 at the weekend and something occurred to me, the F2 had a bigger rear chain. Is it possible to fit this to an F1 or earlier? I know the F2 is geared down a bit, is this internal or by the rear chain sprockets? ( if anything I would gear up my F1 not down ) bearing in mind the bigger chain is bound to be more expensive is it even worth doing if you are not drag racing? ( wondered if the bigger chain would last longer or is it just stronger but would wear at the same rate )

Just idly wondering, my guess is its not worth it and would wear at same rate, anyone done it though?

CB750 / Pics
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:30:17 PM »
If Ive done it right hopefully there should be pics of my recently completed F1. The photos flatter her a bit but she's not bad considering she was a barn find and EVERY alloy part needed refinishing and every chrome part was rusty. There are still some small improvements I can make ( and will do ) but she is going to be ridden not stored away for high days and holidays so it will be as and when I can be bothered.

CB750 / Another one saved!
« on: March 29, 2012, 07:45:17 AM »
OK, my F1 project is now complete and she just passed her MOT so after standing for 25 - 30 years and 18 months hard work another 750 is back where she belongs on the road!

Will try and sort out a pic at the weekend.

She will not be wrapped in cotton wool and stored away for sunny days but will be used regularly and there are still a few little bits of 'beautifying' I will be attending to as we go along.

One slight fly in the ointment was I got an 'advisory' on the MOT for a weeping fork oil seal, thing is both the fork tubes and the seals are brand new!  >:(

CB750 / Clutch sticking?
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:48:38 AM »
Well, finally got my F1 started and she sounds sweet which is one hell of a relief so nearly there now ( Will post pics when done ) One query tho, When I first got the bike I checked the clutch by pulling in the clutch lever and kicking over the motor, I expected the clutch to slip, it didn't. As part of my rebuild I stripped the clutch to be sure there was nothing wrong, all was fine so I reassembled with fresh oil. Thing is, even though its now been run the clutch still doesn't slip on the kickstart.

First question, am I right it should slip that way? (guess it depends on where the kickstart engages in the drive train) if it should, any ideas on the best way to free it? Just want to be sure before I attempt to put it into gear and shear off all the dogs!

CB750 / Front indicator earth
« on: March 05, 2012, 08:43:51 AM »
Getting very close now with my F1 build. Connected up the battery yesterday and surprisingly nearly everything worked! Only problem is with the front indicators which just glow and both come on no matter which side is selected ( rears are fine ) I suspect they are not earthing.

The rears have a small earth wire attached to the mounting but I don't recall anything similar on the front have I missed something? or have I just painted something I shouldn't have?

CB750 / Fuel tank cleaning
« on: February 29, 2012, 11:02:15 AM »
Have got round to cleaning out the tank on my F1 rebuild. Basically after removing around a bucketful of rusty, petrolly, smelly gunk the inside is not too bad, the usual expected rust along seams ( not enough to leak ) and small rust 'spots' over the sides.

Appreciate the gravel / handful of nuts techniques but that seems a little harsh for this and am not sure that will get at the seams. Anyone had any success with any prioprietory rust removers?

CB750 / Oil lines
« on: February 27, 2012, 02:10:29 PM »
Was just looking at the oil lines on my F1, seems sensible to replace anything vaguely rubbery on a 35 year old bike. Noticed these braided ones from HEL that look pretty but I notice they are held on with glorified hose clamps rather than the crimped on originals, presumably I would have to cut off the old crimped fitting? anyone done this? any opinions on whether these lines safe enough? ( I assume the oil pressure is not that high in them? )

CB750 / F1 Zorst
« on: November 12, 2011, 02:48:10 PM »
I figure most F1s around now are fitted with Motad 4 into 1s, My F1 rebuild is approaching completion and I have just got around to fitting the Motad but, um, I can't seem to make it fit! The problem is with cylinder 2, the supplied pipe binds against the others and if inserted into the silencer it won't seat in the head and vice versa. I suspect an incorrect pipe may have been supplied and have mailed Motad for advice, just wondered if anyone else had had problems or has any advice, its always on the cards I am doing something dumb! ( I have tried swapping the pipes for cylinders 2 & 3 but thats worse! )

CB750 / Needle jets
« on: June 17, 2011, 04:27:24 PM »
Hi,

My F1 restoration is proceeding well and I have reached the carbs. The originals that came with the bike are horribly bunged up with a hard residue I can't budge any ideas what might soften it up?

Next I have obtained some other 750 carbs ( presumably not F1 ) which are much cleaner so I plan to re jet those suitably. As a matter of interest does anyone know if the actual needle JET ( not the needle ) is different on the F1 compared to others? tried to compare part numbers but other models seem to list needle and jet separately but the F1 shows needle and jet together as a kit so part numbers are bound to differ. Finally, before I bugger something up do the needle jets just push / tap out? if so is it downwards towards the float bowl? Haynes manual tells you to replace them regularly but not how to!

cheers

Andie

CB750 / Mileage?
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:23:28 AM »
Obviously the miles you can get out of a 750 motor depends on an awful lot, and I suspect most are trashed or even rebuilt before the max has been reached but was having a chat the other day on this topic and know of a CB5004 with 80,000 miles so far on original unrebuilt motor, just a little survey for interest, what the highest miles anyone out there has got ( or got so far ) from an unrebuilt 750?

CB750 / Circlip pliers?
« on: September 26, 2010, 10:19:10 AM »
Hi all,

F1 rebuild progressing slowly, at least some bits are going back together now. thanks to this forum.

Am now at the point of stripping the brake master cylinder and need circlip pliers that are suitable. Brough a pair specially made for master cylinder use but they dont fit, before I take and angle grinder to them has anyone found a suitable pair on the net anywhere? or is the special tool available?

CB750 / F1 rebuild and stuck front wheel spindle!
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:02:24 AM »
Firstly a quick update on my F1 rebuild. Don't get a lot of time at the moment and am still at the strip down stage. For this year I am hoping the motor will be OK as it is low mileage ( 5900 ) and will be replacing the brake hoses / seals etc. Will be prettying her up and have sent a lot of bits off to the chromers. At the moment I am still on the front end, will be removing and re sealing the forks and replacing head bearing with tapered roller. Am encountering the usual stuck items ( other posts show the snapped exhaust stud and broken carb float pivot support ) and all screws seem to be welded in ( yes I do have an impact driver ) latest casualty is the screw holding the speedo cable in the gearbox which will need to be drilled etc I guess.

Latest problem is the front wheel spindle nut which has so far resisted my attempts to remove. If the wheel is out then anything of the diameter to go through the hole in the offside just bends or breaks. Next plan is to get a proper ring spanner so I can use a decent 'persuasion tool No 1' on it while the wheels is back on the bike but only held on the offside. If all else fails I guess I will have to source another one and cut this one off so I can get the wheels off to be rebuilt. Anyone else had this problem? if so any tips?

Cheers for now, will try and post some pics over the weekend

CB750 / Project bike
« on: July 31, 2010, 02:41:48 PM »
Hi all, as per my entry in the new members forum heres a pic of my barn find project F1 ( provided I have attached it OK! ). It has low mileage and has been standing since 1985. Pic makes it look a lot nicer than it is, all the chrome items are shot  :( paintwork is very nice tho.

First snag, exhaust stud has sheared while trying to attempting to remove exhaust. I soaked all nuts overnight in releasing fluid but such things are bound to happen on a bike that has been standing so long. Anyone removed one of these studs successfully? I plan to try releasing fluid and mole grips while applying heat as I assume it is a steel stud directly in alloy, sound like a plan?

New Member Introductions / Hi From Essex
« on: July 20, 2010, 05:25:29 PM »
Hi all,

An ageing 'born again biker'from Essex UK here. Old enough to know better but despite that have taken on the restoration of a yellow 1976 CB750F1 ( the exact model and colour I actually had new in '76, ah you can taste the nostalgia! ) This beast is a low mileage ( just under 6,000 ) 'barn find' Basically all chrome parts are rubbish so if anyone has anything including nuts & bolts that are in very good nick, from fork legs to chain guard, anythijng to reduce my bill at the chrome platers and get it on the road as soon as poss coz basically I can't wait! contact me please with pics and price.

Any advice / common probs with this kind of rebuild gratefully received ( like how to clean the crap out of the fuel tank without rubber arms )

cheers for now!
