CB350/400 / Rear sprocket guard
« on: December 18, 2020, 11:45:12 AM »
Hi good people, has anyone found a way of getting a rear sprocket guard sourced and fitted. I am aware there is a reproduction one but it is very expensive for what it is. I am sure one could be fashioned from another bike, anyone done this? I have a guard from another Honda in the garage but it is too small for this job.

This forum is amazing, and Hairy you are a genius! Opened up that connector behind the brake switch and sure enough there was verdigris on the spade of the green wire. Cleaned it up, pushed the button and away she goes.
Thanks again :)

Thanks Hairy, will check the wires, never thought of that. The points are new but bike did run with them, will clean them.

CB350/400 / Weak spark advice please
« on: March 23, 2017, 04:32:01 PM »
Ok so the bike was running fine last season, left it neglected over the winter. It will not start now. There is a weak spark at the plug, fuel seems fine, carbs all good with fresh fuel. It has new coils, leads NGK caps, points, condensers and plugs. I am stumped! Probably missing something obvious but just cant see it at the moment.  The coils are aftermarket, however it makes not difference when I try an original set. Any advice will be gratefully received.

This is how I refurbished my clocks, about a third of the way down the page.

That is some job you have done there!

Thank you everyone, it feels encouraging that you have done this and I have great hope of managing the task!

i did mine and its not too difficult just takes ages to uncrimp, tip when recrimping you need an arc (same dia as the clock) of aluminum to spread the load and prevent marks when crimping I learn't this after i did mine. so i ahve some marks on the band but they look better for the refurb.

Managed to get replacement fasteners from a local fastener suppliers, i had to retap the face to accept but worked well.

Attached are some before and after,

That's a lovely job, I am hoping mine will be as good! Can I ask what kind of paint you used on the housing?

Looks like a really nice bike. I have a gauge restoration guide that I can email that is specific to the 400 four gauges, it's fair to say that removal and re-fitting the band defeats many. The guide will at least give an idea of what's involved and if the task is within you capabilities.

I would appreciate that very much Kent400

Has been a long haul but finally got the bike back together and I think looking pretty good. I am stating to get picky with little bits so will be back to DS for another credit card hammering! What I want to ask you guys is what is the best way to refurbish the instruments? The speedometer is not to bad but the tacho has the washed out orange section and a rusted screw on the inside. I see that ebay has the overlays but as far as I can tell the clocks would need to cracked open at the crimps? Has anyone done this<
Thanks again

Can anyone recommend a decent carb repair kit for 400/4? I found a kit by "Legend_Motorcycles"  on ebay, states made in Japan but not sure of the quality.
Thanks

CB350/400 / Re: Motad Replacement Downpipe
« on: June 12, 2016, 10:51:15 PM »
I have these pipes fitted and think it would be normal for them to turn a bit brown near the cylinders. They are not double skinned like the original, a rub with autosolve should clean them quite easily Mine are too new to really comment on how much they would do this, perhaps Chris or someone else who has them on long term could comment. Looking at your bike it seems to be concentrated on one pipe, did you clean the others? If not it could be that particular pipe is not as resistant as the rest or the cylinder is running hotter than the other three.

Finally got it all sorted out. Turns out the bores were all standard size and in really good condition, machine shop honed the barrels and new Honda piston rings fitted, even the last washer from the head turn up, it was lying on the ramp!. Bike now back together and sounds as sweet as a nut. Just some minor jobs to do and then up for an MOT. Thank you guys for your input.

Thanks Chris, good to hear from you. I will have a look at DSS, yes it seems strange that the Cruzinimage do not do a non big bore kit. I have read good reviews on the big bore kit, little or no other changes needed, would be good to hear from someone who has carried this out and what their thoughts are on it. It works out far less to do it this way and if what I am reading is correct the engine feels the better for it. The other problem it solves for me is to get the cylinders in balance as I am not sure what has gone on exactly with them. I am taking a guess that two of the bores have been taken out to the first oversize and the other two are standard, but I am just not sure.
Incidentally does anyone know of a machine shop in Central Scotland or a mail order company who could do this work?
