Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / SPORTSBIKESHOP_LTD

Just a mention for SPORTSBIKESHOP_LTD who offered no charge when a pair of overtrousers I swapped sizes was refunded twice accidentally by eBay. I will of course see them right but good customer service worth a mention.

CB500/550 / Selling CB500/4 K2 1972 Gold
« on: March 17, 2024, 12:18:08 PM »
Hi all, after 10 years of ownership I have reluctantly decided to sell.
I had a 500/4 from 1974 to 1978, and this bike, imported from Italy in 2003 has brought me much satisfaction, not least in the form of enormous help from this forum, as well as the usual admiring comments from people at shows like Brooklands etc. My last long run was to Sammy Millers, 81 miles each way.
The 1 & 2 carbs initially leaked after the bike was left for 2 months but it was just the float valves sticking, and after draining and refilling the 2 bowls, now all good. Ideally the carbs might benefit from a proper rebuild, although I have cleaned jets etc. The bike is not like new showroom but is very presentable and most importantly rides very well, pulling cleanly from low revs and changes gear sweetly.
The OEM pipes are very good and only 4# has a tiny almost invisible mark at the angle of the trumpet end.
I have carried out loads of work, including:
New DS headlight. Front brake caliper, hoses and master, and disc shroud. New clocks. New matching 3 locks with 2 keys. NOS original paint tank, POR-15 lined. New fuel tap. New coils. New used points plate and cam. Low miles TT100 tyres. New front wheel bearings. New correct pattern seat cover. Superb Hondaman transistorised ignition. New clutch rod and cable. New clutch rod and gearshift seals. New 5 oil pump seals (no drips bone dry). New chain. Motobatt AGM battery. Engine bars. New throttle cable. Smooth throttle and clutch. Correct repro tool kit in tray. Fuse and holder in tray. Owners manual and Haynes manual plus some spares.
I think it is worth £6,500-7,000.
Any viewing welcome in Cobham, Surrey.

Member 4 Sales / Chain 98 link o ring with split link
« on: September 16, 2023, 07:36:39 AM »
I have this for sale on eBay which I’m happy to give free to a forum member, just for postage cost about £5.50 tbc.
It’s 25mm wide which was rubbing on the engine casing, so only useable if you are sure it will suit your bike. It may need o rings for the split link but didn’t have when fitted to my bike, and may not be essential.
It appears to be nice and tight, pivots well, and no sideways flex or sloppiness.

CB500/550 / Carb rebuild service?
« on: August 15, 2023, 05:49:27 PM »
Hi, after in-situ cleaning, jet cleaning, fitting new correct float bowl seals etc, finding a float bowl screw seat thread stripped, and still leaking, I’m finally considering having them properly refurbished. Can anyone recommend a reliable tested service?
Advice appreciated as always.

CB500/550 / Float bowl gaskets
« on: May 27, 2023, 06:57:34 PM »
This will be on a past post somewhere but I thought I would share it in case useful. I left my carbs dry for a month or two in the winter, and when I came to use the bike again, they flooded from the bowl joints. I had bought the shaped gaskets about three years ago, possibly from the USA, and I think they must’ve shrunk when dry due to being Neoprene. I bought the round quality Viton ones from Julie (thank you Julie) and to sit them neatly in the groove, all I had to do was very gently stretch them a tiny amount and they sat perfectly. Happy days.

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / 2 bike insurance
« on: January 23, 2023, 02:50:58 PM »
Hmm a bit disappointed, just been quoted by another insurer, for my CB500/4 and a NC750S I’m thinking of buying.
Over £450 with low mileages etc.
Think I’ll stick with my current insurer, £85 for the 500/4 only.
☹️

Tricks & Tips / Lumpy on startup.
« on: January 03, 2023, 11:59:53 AM »
Just an observation that I noticed a wet verdigris deposit on the connectors in the small shroud to the right of the battery (500/4) from the points leading to the coils. It might be worth checking if the feed to the coils is suspect.

CB500/550 / Fitting Hondaman unit.
« on: November 19, 2022, 10:15:55 AM »
I was just starting to familiarise myself with the wiring connections for this.

1) The diagram doesn’t mention the orange and purple wires so I’m guessing orange goes with yellow and purple with blue?

2) It looks like the connections can be made in the small shroud to the right of the battery? I only need to release the two securing tabs nearest the points and the shroud can be slid up for better access? Worst case disconnect at the points.

3) I’ve got a tool kit in the tray, but the unit fits very neatly under the battery strap, has anyone done this?

4) I think I’ve read on a post that a good connection for the black power feed is the rear light one on the rear mudguard?

Experiences much appreciated!

CB500/550 / Condensers fast vs slow
« on: October 30, 2022, 04:05:11 PM »
Just got a new multimeter that shows one type of condenser charges and discharges much more quickly than another. Both charge and discharge fully, just one is quicker. Can anyone confirm which, if any, is preferred? Many thanks

CB500/550 / Chain lube
« on: June 08, 2021, 08:01:43 PM »
Prompted by suggestions in florence’s post I can highly recommend Castrol “Chain Lube Racing” or similar products.
I’m not sure if it has wax or lithium but once dried it doesn’t fling off as easily as oil and doesn’t seem to attract as much build up of deposits, particularly in my road bike gears.

CB500/550 / CB500/4 UGP96M still exist?
« on: March 17, 2021, 09:14:58 PM »
I thought last time I looked on the gov site for my old bike UGP96M it mentioned the last reg date around 1993. I just looked again and there is mention of a V5C issued 14 July 2005. Is this just an anomaly of the system or is it possible part or all of it still exists?
Many thanks for any advice.

Misc / Open / Exhaust gas analyser
« on: January 09, 2021, 04:20:54 PM »
Hi all
Probably wishful thinking!.....Does anyone know if it would be possible to use an exhaust gas analyser, like they use for car MOTs, to adjust idle mixture, and if so, what readings would look like?
