Misc / Open / First and Worst
« on: August 14, 2010, 04:33:32 PM »
Hi Folks,

What was your first motorcycle and what was your Worst motorcyle .........................

My first was a Yamaha FS1E, I went all over the place on that bike,  Darley Moor,Oulton Park, even to the I.O.M TT Races, all that ever happened to that bike was the plug would whisker up. If you decoked the exhaust baffle, head and barrel at regular times it ran sweet.

My worst was any black bike ........ black was/is an unlucky colour for me on a bike :-[ I had a new (Black) RS 250 Honda and the valve guides were knackered after 500 miles. When the engine was hot after a run, if you could not start it on the first or second attempt, then sweaty times were ahead... lots of bump starting, it could be a Bstard to start.

Misc / Open / The Dreded Rust
« on: July 19, 2010, 06:50:55 PM »
Rust, It gets us all (our bikes that is ) in one shape or another. As I'm new to restoring, I have been investigating all sorts of rust removers.

I have had great results with dry acid salts made into a pickle, but I thought that I would investigte more.
There seems to be an endless aray of rust removers..... some dangerous, Hydrochloric Acid ( Brick Cleaner) some VERY dangerous, Sulphuric Acid ( drain cleaner or battery acid ) and others that are bio degradeable.........

This Leads me to good old vinegar.

I realise that this must be old hat to our more Knowledgeable Members but I was Browsing the internet and came across a site where large parts of a cars drive shaft were stripped of years of rust and gunk with nothing more than a 24hr soak in Tescos value Malt Vinegar................. Never I thought. Must be special effects or something.

So,
I had a go and was amazed with the results, Just soaked over night, then cleaned with a wire brush on a dremmel and finished with a small scotch brite dolly.

Check out the pics...................

Why did Honda spend billions of yen developing this beautiful bike ( well I think it is beautiful anyway ) and air & oiled cooled to boot, then say that there would be not enough interest in Europe to sell it here ? only for sale in the land of the rising sun!!. Fortunately we got the hideous DN-01 intsead . That sold well. NOT.

Makes me think of a modern 400/4 on steroids

CB350/400 / Zinc Plating
« on: July 11, 2010, 05:07:00 PM »
Hi to all,

Bought myself a home zinc plating kit so had a go today, here are some pics of the results, quite easy to use and I am pleased with the results.

Most of the items were finished in a blue passivate, but some I finished in a yellow pasivate which does not show up well in the pics but the blue finish gives a clear blue bright finish where as the yellow finish gives a gold with hints of red and green.

The best way to get a decent finish is to clean / polish / de rust the item to be plated before you start as any imperfections will always be in the final result.

Other Bikes / A Nice Little Model .......Hmmmm!
« on: July 10, 2010, 11:29:00 AM »
I took these pictures at the October 2009 classic bike show. Here is a picture of a mint Suzuki GS750, A very nice bike indeed, but look closer and on a stand above the bike is an exact scale model of this bike, right down to the rear carrier,

Hats off to this guy, the model is all hand built and is not a kit. It took him 15 winters to make this thing. Can you imagine the skill involved !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

This Bike and the model was recently featured in the classic motorcycle mechanics magazine and rightly so.

I found these old pictures of an early prototype CB750 in America going through "testing", I'm so glad they did not stick with this as the final image because to me, the bike looks like a big CD175.

Also, check out the CB750 "MOTOCROSS" Bike !!!

Hope this works............ It's the first time I've posted Pictures !!!!
