Title: OUT AND ABOUT 2024
Post by: Nurse Julie on January 01, 2024, 12:51:47 PM
Happy New year to everyone 🍾🍾🍾

Managed a couple of hours out on the CD250u's. Chilly, wet roads but lovely and sunny, nice to be back in the warm now 😊😊😊 Not many bikes out today and the riders we met were all in the 50-70 year old age bracket, except the 7 year old out riding pillion with his dad, with his ice lolly 😂😂😂😂

Hi Julie and Graham,
About the same here today, a chilly 6 degrees, glad I fitted heated grips!  Out over the Birsay moor and nearly got hit by a male Hen Harrier.  No bikes other than push-irons out and a few folk emptying dogs.  A couple of pics at the Brough of Gurness looking towards Eynhallow.  Mucky wet roads and a gritter passed me in the opposite direction, thankfully not gritting at the time.  At least we've been out!

Quite different here in Norfolk, totally dry, though only 7 - 8c.

I took the Trident out for a while and, whilst refueling, a large number of bikes came to the forecourt, mostly British classics from the 1970's, although there was a 400/4 amongst them. I think that it might have been a VMCC ride out, as they are very active around these parts.

In the past week, I've managed to ride eight times on various bikes, so weather generally fair, although there has been rain on occasions it has soon dried.

I went to the bike meet at Bishop's Cleeve,

Bit nippy, rained on the way back

Took the 4 wheel Honda

Hey, no mention of me sourcing parts for the Cb200, I feel cheated  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Good one John, nice to see you get some recognition at last.

Where do your local VMCC meet?

The Moon Inn

Mordiford, just east of Hereford, they have a partnership with also a meeting at Builth Wells

I didn't know you had CB200 bits!!

All I needed were,mudguards, Carbs,and coil,

Beware if you buy supposed compatible coils,

Most have a to high primary resistance,

About 3ohm is perfect, 4.7 is enough to cut the sparks above 7k.

Don't ask how know

That also explains why I needed carbs

Ridings out for me for a while, Carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands and both thumb joints shot.
I only managed a mile before the pain in my throttle hand made me turn around.
Next month I'm due for a new thumb joint in my left hand and if it is good the right will come next, they reckon the dodgy thumb joints are causing the CTS so a new joint may fix both problems.
The joys of getting more mature.

Cheers

Dennis

Great pics John, quite the experience racing these machines. A quite different set of skills I would imagine.
Athame57 better get the Chauffeur hat looked out. 😂
Dennis wish you all the best for getting sorted. Don’t like to hear of people getting denied the thing all of us enjoy. But thumbs up for the future. (no pun intended😄)

Not to be outdone by all you 'intrepid bikers'.......this is moi today - at the perimeter fence of Blackpool Airport.....Blackpool Tower is in the distance behind the bike. Fantastic day for a ride and as sleet and rain are forecast for the rest of the week, I thought I'd get out while I can.

Got this CB1300S in November as I really missed having a big bike - with big fat tyres - so the CB600F got chucked in PX from Castle Motorcycles in Castleford......brilliant people and great to deal with. Happy to recommend them.

Had two of these CB1300's before, an 04 and an 06 both from new. Still a brilliant bike 16 years and 17K later, and I'm proper pleased with this well looked after 08 example. Happy as a pig in the proverbial ! Roll on summer !

It's an 1981 NF75 made in Belgium.
Not one of Mr Honda's finest models IMHO.

Looks like some sort of Cub variation? I have a few C90’s and they reach an eye watering 45mph on a good day! 😂
Title: Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2024
Post by: Skoti on February 08, 2024, 02:05:13 PM
Probably not in the same league as a Cub.
It's a two stroke twist and go thing with a retail price higher than a proper four stroke C70 in it's day, which maybe explains why you don't see many about.

Anyhow I got it for nowt and saved it from the skip.

I can honestly say if Ted hadnt told me different that except for the primary chain slack i would have said the motor had done about 10,000.
Minimal shell wear
Centre selector minimal wear, which is unheard of
Clean

My only regret was that as they have closed the workshop where i am i couldnt get the outside washed off

Fantastic rebuild. The CBX550F's were real lookers and a lot more stylish than the GPZ550. The fairing gave them a race looking presence like a mini RCB.
Is that an original exhaust, where did you get that from!
The inboard front brakes are now becoming the choice brake for vintage/classic shed builds because they give the impression of being a drum brake if done right.
Great job, well done, that's a keeper for sure.

Thanks and yes John it is the 550 it's the one Steve put up for sale I think over 4 years ago and this has been the first winter without any notable health problems.
I am thinking of selling the 750f1 as it's getting a bit much when it comes to moving it about. This could become the go to bike.

The exhaust came with the bike but needed a little work. It is not a 550 exhaust it's from a CBX400. and was a real pain to get on as the header pipes are shorter
on the 400 than the 550

Honda used a bit of license calling it a 550, as it was really a full 572cc. My flat mate had one in the early 1980s she was a fellow dispatch rider. Alas, one of many that suffered profoundly from the curse of the CBX 550, a failing cam chain tensioner.  ::)  Like the Conquer tank that the army gave up with, it seemed to spend more time in the workshop than on the road.  :o

Hopefully I can get the Honda out for a ride before the end of the good weather, I go in for the first operation to get a new thumb joint in May (left hand) with the right hand following after that. At the moment I can only make about a mile before the pain in my right hand stops me dead.

Hi John, at first it was identified as Carpel tunnel syndrome as I was getting terrible tingling/burning in my hands and pain in my thumbs/wrists. But an X Ray revealed that both thumb joints were shot, this was causing inflamation and the carpel tunnel problem.
So hopefully the new thumb joints will cure both problems.

Cheers

Good luck with the op Dennis. I had a biopsy carried out on my right ear a couple of weeks ago and it is still too painful to even attempt to put a crash helmet on!

Now that sounds nasty

Hopefully I can get the Honda out for a ride before the end of the good weather, I go in for the first operation to get a new thumb joint in May (left hand) with the right hand following after that. At the moment I can only make about a mile before the pain in my right hand stops me dead.

Cheers

Dennis

All the best with the operation Dennis.

Had 20 miles on the 750 today, it’s the first run since winterisation and it felt great. I’ve been slow getting out this year as I’ve had a new shed build with a little project inside it and the other bikes haven’t been able to get out due to some garden work. They’ve spent most of the time living in the house. Normality has been resumed.

Hope the result is a negative on biopsy Dave. I had similar about 8 yrs ago on right ear about 10 o'clock position, with no further action.

Nice bit of blanket stitch though  :) and all healed invisibly now.

Thanks Nigel.  Mine was in the same place as yours! I got the 'All Clear, No further action required' letter on Wednesday, a full four weeks early so I was a happy bunny. Just got to let it heal properly now before I get back on the bike. They said it was sun related damage which is wierd because I have always used Factor 50 sun lotion (i.e. a blanket) but apparently and according to the dermatoligist, sun damage occurs between the ages of 2 and 10 years old and we didn't have sun lotion back then!

That's a great view Hubert,
I was round there last year and it always feels very special, almost regardless of the weather as long as you have the right kit. My favourite is the Mam Ratagan pass.  Although I had a few 'Wings, I never had an 1100 but the odd ones I rode did seem more cumbersome than the others - the 1500 felt like more of a sports bike in comparison!

I've had a KZ Wing, Ian and both these are good handlers never ridden the 1500, it's the bulk that's put me off...the sheet size of it...my 1100 handles quite well with the Hagon Nitros at the back and Hagon fork springs at the front and bt45's...well enough for me anyway...you're right it's lovely up there, I was surprised that all the hotels up there want £130 plus per night b&b! Cheapskate me makes it there and back for the last ferry

For the last two evenings I have had a few hours fishing at a local man made Lake that I only discovered by pure serendipity  about five years ago.

My BiL (Dave) told me the story behind a Pike that was on the wall of a pub in Tutbury in a glass frame for many decades. It transpired that a local lad who was a glass cutter at the Webb Corbett Factory (now flats) caught the Pike when out poaching with Dave one night in a brook near Hilton where there was a small pool caused by an old works dam. Circa 1968-70)

The lad Neil Wheal (sadly deceased) was also an amateur Taxidermist hence the Pike on display in the pub as he was at one time associated with a barmaid at the pub a stones throw from the old glassworks.

As I grew up close to this area I wanted to find out where this pool was as I only knew the Brook as it used to flood part of Hilton every few decades. I went onto Google Maps/Satelite and found this huge lake that you cannot see from any nearby roads except possibly from the newish (30 yrs?) A50 By-Pass.

I drove out to where I thought the Lake was circa 2019, the access road was gated with a lock & chain. I climbed the gate and walked about a fifth of a mile down the road to reach a lafge notice board that gave details of the fishing club that owned the Lake.

I duly paid my £35 a year membership I am now in my fourth year as a member - the price went up to £40 for 2024/5. It transpires that when they were building the A50 the Contractors dug out free gravel for use in the road construction. In the 1950/60s there were a number of Gravel Works in the Hilton Area with a nearby Concrete Works.

What was left behind after the A50 was completed were a few houses that were in the end not demolished but sold off leaving this one area of about 4 or 5 Acres of land with a big hole in it full of construction debris. A  couple of blokes from the Derby Area bought the plot and in a couple of years it became a private fishing club.

The place is full of wild life plus I saw my first ever Red Kite flying overhead a few years ago - probably out on a day trip from further north.

PS Could not load all my fishing tackle on the 400 so went in the car - does this qualify for Out & About. ;D ;D ;D

I think the back story qualifies it for an Out & About Ted👍

As an addendum to the story way back in 1969/70 I collected a brand new Mini Cooper S from Kennings on Queeen street Derby using trade plates (closed decades ago) it was a blue & white one. I drove the vehicle to the garage were I was working during the summer holidays - a Vauxhall Dealer (Allsops)on Bold Lane Derby. The vehicle was bought by an 18 year old lad - yes it was Neil Wheal.

Never saw the Neil or the car until 1973/4 when I saw it advertised in the local paper. I viewed the car but it had a cracked sump that had been bodged with glass fiber - at that time I had no facilites to remove the engine to fix it so I put my best mate onto the car as it was a one owner vehicle. The photo below is me (Navigator) with my mate at the start of the local DFS rally start line - circa 1974/5  yep it was Neils Cooper S - its a small world.

I've just got home from the Kempton Bike Show and autojumble. I'd like to say I had a really good ride over on the VFR but riding through the London 'burbs' is  painful even on a bike, so many idiots and morons in cars. I actually had one guy next to me at a set of red lights who decided he'd had enough of waitng and just decided to go despite all the traffic coming around the roundabout!
The show was pretty good, the CR Rotary racer was there and was run up on the rollers, what a sound as was the Jawa 2 valve speedway bike.
The Best in Show was won by a Honda Phil Read Replica with a very nice back story. There was a 90cc twin Yamaha that was highly comended as well as a CB72/77?
I was hoping to get some 10/40 oil for Ratty but nothing available, plenty of 20/50 or straight 30/40/50! In order not to feel I had a wasted trip I bought a can of electrical contact cleaner instead!

Great photos John - aside from Matlock on a Sunday there are no local biker meet pubs that I know of - decades ago there was a pub out near Longford I think it was The Ostrich - now a Private House.

I last visited the pub about four years ago - the pub seemed to be popular with overseas bikers that day.

I’m on a cruise around Iceland (not on my bike).

I’ve seen two bikes in 10 days. Not really surprising given the climate and remoteness.

However, today we are in the fishing town of Vestmannaeyjar on the island of Heimar.

Wandering up a random backstreet I saw a Black Bomber on the back of a trailer, so wandered over to say hello.

Inside I found the Drullusokkar Motorcycle Club.

I used to stay at a Hotel in Benderloch and also one at the Falls or Lora in the early 1990's, when I was doing work on an electronic monitoring system at Foster Yeoman Quarry at Glensanda, which wasn't accessible by road, only by ferry. Almost everything on site was from RS Components as I remember. A beautiful part of the world and I also used to enjoy eating haggis at McTavish's Kitchen in Oban. :D

Always remember going through a place called ArdLui   ...had visions of a tough Italian/Scottish bruiser.  ;D

Ash, you'd have got the Glensanda boat from Port Appin wouldn't you? They're lovely all weather fast boats...Foster Yeoman have sold the quarry now but it's still working and I used to enjoy fish and chips at McTavish's too but the place is now a shop...I can see Glensanda from my house and now and then can hear the dull thud of blasting 😄👍

From memory (a long time ago now  ;D) Foster Yeoman had their own boat and it went from Ledaig near Benderloch to Glensanda. I seem to remember that the stone  produced at that time mostly went by boat to be Tilbury. It was a bit of an unusual job because our arch rivals Goodyear had sold them a conveyor belt splice failure monitoring system ..that didn't work  :-[  By some strange 'old pals' act between the top brass where I worked and Goodyear in Akron, Ohio, yours truly was sent there to re-design the electronics to get it to work properly. A long drive from East Yorkshire though in a 1.8 Escort Diesel !

I know what you mean about FB Steve but closed groups like the CB72/77 UK are truly excellent ..with absolutely no nonsense (unlike the 400 and 750 ones where everyone is a so-called expert) ...if you own a CB72 or other early 1960s Honda and not a member you are seriously missing out IMHO.

I visited the Bike Shed Show in Shadwell (or The Bike Beard Show) in East London last night. To me this is the best motorcycle show as its all one-off builds and some of the ingenuity has to be seen to be believed.

One particular bike was based on a 650 V-Twin Honda and it is a Steam punk build called Isambard. It was built as homage to Brunel and is based on one of his locos. When you first see it looks ugly but looking at it closely the build is pretty special especially the copper work for the water cooling and the sight glass used for the fuel tank level. The cockpit resembles a steam train as do the front forks and the throttle cables!

Some other really nice bikes were there as well including a really neat 500 Honda and a unique Kawasaki Z900 for those who want to keep biking on four wheels when they can no longer manage two!

The show is on over the next two days and really worth a visit. They show the MGP in the cinema, there are live bands, craft beers, food and a really nice vibe.

Norton were there showing three bikes, the new Commando (special deal of that, a £2k off deal, only now £13K!!). The V4CR was dessed in the 125th anniversary colour scheme, yours for £49K. They also had a V4 in the colours of the Steve Hislop White Charger that won the IOM in 1992 and not for sale.

I don't know what the second photo is of, some amazing steam punk thing Jules Verne would have looked at home on!

Be interested to see how the auction goes as the last one near me indicated a significant drop in prices - which seems to be a trend in both the bike and car market.

A guy in the next village built this monster - now sold on I believe & improved in many areas.
I actually did the DVLA Inspection visit to Mr Bettson's  house in Mickleover circa 1979/80 - he used to work for British Rail.
The original engine was a pair of Siamesed Hillman 998 Rally Imp car engines, twin electric fan radiators side mounted as panniers. His biggest nightmare was building a clutch that could handle the torque - last time I spoke to him about 35 years ago  it was still an issue.

It's been in some magazines here is a link to a review of sorts.https://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?198695-For-the-motor-cyclists-out-there-Bettson-V8

The APT. Used to test it on the line north of Derby past our gaff in Duffield. Fab technology never perfected. Am I right in thinking the Pendolino west coast modern trains use the idea?
Title: Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2024
Post by: Laverda Dave on June 15, 2024, 12:27:34 AM
Yes they do Tim. They perfected the system, BR was starved of money to finish the job. as is the British way with any new and groundbreaking invention!

When I was the test manager for the new fleet of trains introduced on London Underground I was based at the railway test track located in Old Dalby, it used to be the Midland Main Line to rival the east and west coast main lines but was closed in 1966. I worked there with a lot of guys who had been the test engineers for BR and they spent years on the tilting train project, there was a gas turbine tilting train as well as the electric version but it never made it past the protoype stage. The tiling trains were tested at Old Dalby during its protoype stage. BR eventually abandoned the test track and it fell into dissrepair. It was leased by Virgin Trains who tested every Pendalino train before they entered service, strange how things pan out!

As a footnote, when BR was at the test track they undertook the famous nuclear flask test where they drove a diesel train carrying a nuclear flask into a solid concrete block, the concrete block was still there when I left in 2017, it was too big to break up!  I was told the test itself was (or should have been) conducted in private with just BR, the Govt and British Nuclear Fuels present however the farmer who owned the land next to the test track built a small grandstand and charged the general public a fee to watch it!

I took the Interceptor out today for my first proper ride on it since picking it up on Thursday. I know its not a Honda but it is still a SOHC!
I've got to say it rides really well with plenty of go for only 46BHP. I thought it may be a bit gutless compared to a Viffer but not at all although I didn't take it on the motorway where it probably would feel a bit down on power but that would defeat the point of it, its an A and B road bike really.
The build quality is really impressive and although it is still only 4 years old nothing has tarnished, flaked, come loose, peeled or cracked. The chrome on the tank is very deep and the hand lining is old school quality. It certainly handled the Chequers Bends, my usual testing swevery with ease.

Post by: Laverda Dave on June 16, 2024, 08:05:12 PM
No Ted, you could have bought the RE650 and still have loads of change left over :o.
I paid £3600 for mine, four years old, genuine 2,500 miles on the clock, full service history still in immaculate condition and I bought it to use no matter what the weather :D. I've seen them for sale at £3k (as Cat N).
My mantra after the problems with Ratty on Friday is 'Ride them, don't spend all my time working on them'.
BUT..........The RE650 is not a Honda sohc with all the charisma of the Honda so it's horses for courses as Dickie Davies used to say on the ITV7 ::)
I only bought the RE becuase the wife said 'Why don't you get yourself another bike' :o. I've always been told for the sake of married harmony NEVER question your wife, so I didn't, I just did what she told me (for once) ;D

Craizee that’s a cracking 750. Lovely looking Enfield too, don’t think the wife’s ever told me to buy another bike, I’m always a step ahead of her when it comes to that! 😂😂

I did about 150 miles today, taking the scenic routes to Crieff and back. The bike is running much better after I cleaned the carbs. 😀

Very tasteful mods Gareth. Are they Stadium bar end mirror or Halcyon? I need to get some for the Enfield, the Halcyon are a lot more expensive! I like the headlight mountings, what make are they, much better looking than the ones from TEC.

It's a Halcyon mirror, I got it at a reduced price at a bike show during my build. Still expensive though!

The headlight brackets came from Digital Speedos. They're Japanese I think, can't remember the make.

I have not tried,

The meet starts at 6pm,in the employee carparks,

You can tour the show room, and a few other places,

They had a prototype 3 wheel battery car,

MOT day today for the (Kawasaki) 550 which I bought 2 years ago but haven't actually used yet!

Bikers Realm in WelwynGC, refreshing to be able to just turn up and get an MOT. None of the.old..' we'll need to book you in in three weeks  time' ...which everywhere else near me seems to do. Passed the MOT but the funny rattling I have is a loose drive sprocket which apparently is only held on by the sprocket cover.. So, thanks to the 'aircraft engineer'  I bought it from - hopefully it's just a simple loose bolt or two, but worse case is if it's worn out splines. I'll find out later!

Lovely few hours out at a new, well 2nd year, bike show at West Ashby Manor near Horncastle. Loads of bikes of all sorts, scooter groups, specialist bike displays, race bikes, lots of different beautiful vintage bikes, as well as trikes and special builds. A few nice Honda fours, including Chris R on his Sandcast and his wife Lynn on her 400 four and a beautiful Black Bomber. Lovely location for it, a country manor by a big lake, food and drink. All in, a great time and great venue.

Barn find special is running well again so I decided to go to the shops to pick up some groceries which is about the extent to which I can get out and about  ;D

I enjoyed it so much, when I came back I went mad and fitted the replacement silencer I have been planning to do for over a year and give it a clean, what was I thinking  ::)

Great to see your bike looking like an everyday ride Florence this is how these old bikes should look!

PS Was that barn in the USA or is it a UK bike with semi ape hangers?

Title: Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2024
Post by: florence on July 01, 2024, 10:50:01 AM
Thank you!

It is a UK bike, I've known it since about 1986 when my friend had it and I bought it in boxes in 1995 for £150 and put it back together.  I probably spent about £6-700 getting things right and I've been riding it ever since.  Handlebars like that were all the rage in the 1970s (I find them very comfortable) so in many ways it's a period piece, has all the contemporary modifications, individual air filters, four into one, was a Laser but the silencer rusted to bits.  I've now fitted a universal silencer on the end.  Despite problems people have reported about non-standard exhaust and air filters, this one runs brilliantly, no flat spots or anything.  Doesn't have standard jets though.  Sadly over the years the original petrol tank developed a hole so it now has a 750K1 tank which I bought from DK, 500 ones seem hard to find.

I've never been one for cosmetics though so oily rag it will always be, and practicality over originality.

Great few hours out at Boston Bike Night. New organising team this year and they have moved it from Central Park back to the town centre, Wide Bargate, Strait Bargate and the Market Place. Massive number of bikes there, of all sorts, and a lots of local 'non bikers' visiting and enjoying themselves. I didn't take any photos but when I see some posted on local bike groups by others, I'll post some. All in, a great evening. It was cold though, dry and bright but not much like July 😢😢😢

Julie there seems to be a common theme across the country with the absence of a descent spell of weather, very unseasonably cold and wet here with the temperatures dipping into single figures on several occasions. I’ve had 2 runs on the 550k3 and 1 run on the 750. Still hoping it’s going to change.
Great you had a good gathering for your bike meet!

Some fantastic bikes and cars there. I think it is a K3 from Coburn and Hughes.

The weird thing is an AER with a 250 Villiers twin engine. Looks like a fairground bike off a merry-go-round to me.

The Maico Mobil looks a bit similar as did early Heinkil Tourist - I owned a Tourist for about a week before I rode it to the scrap yard when the gearbox failed with just first gear working. A waste of £15.00 back then. I was given the bike by a friend's neighbour - spent good money on  getting it through it's Mot - on the ride home from the Council Test Center the gearbox failed with a large loss of oil.

Nice Ricky CR Kawasaki.
I have a CR 750 in bits, it needs a full rebuild and a frame re-nickel. I've had the bike for about 30 years, it's been in bits for the past 25 years after it started breathing a bit heavily (pumped oil onto the rear tire in Ledbury and nearly spat me off!).
I don't think I will ever get around to restoring it and if I did the riding position will cripple me within 30 minutes!
It was a genuine S&S built bike with the 860 engine although that had been changed out to a normal 750 engine before I bought it. I need to sell it.

I really am back this time :D
Had a free couple of hours today.
Started working at 2am and finished at 10am still buzzing  ;D
Done a load of overdue invoices. Still buzzing.
Started thinking about getting the zxr400 back on the road.
Couldn't get to it in the garage. So bled the brakes and clutch on the Guzzi.
Still buzzing  ;D
Still couldn't get to the zxr as the 750 was in the way.
It was filthy as I haven't used it for almost 2 years. Washed it.
Tried to start it out of curiosity and it fired up almost instantly.
Definitely still buzzing.
Just come back from an hour's ride and still buzzing   :)

I've been taking advantage of the dry spell so yesterday had a run out from Derby to Ashbourne then up Swinscoe Hill through Waterhouse's to just beyond Bottom Houses towards Ipstones. The return trip was a tad over 52 miles.

The bike ran like a dream but the rider less so, for the last few miles my neck ached plus my wrists were sore from all the Potholes.

Today I did a slightly different route to try to find a smoother road plus I tried to relax my hands a tad, after 35 miles I stopped for a Coffee to give my neck a rest.

I'm trying to ride more regularly to build up my confidence & general strength - at 76 is my body trying to tell me I'm too old?

I think my anticipation skills are good but my very low speed riding skills could be better.

Spooky that's exactly what I'm hoping - I've riden the 400 three times in the last week - I'm getting more confident with each ride.
Oddly enough the worst bit is turning right out of our drive as it's a slight downhill off the drive onto the road - I keep my legs out until I'm doing about 3-4 mph. I keep on catching the right foot rest so it ends upright with nowhere for my right foot to land!
I suspect the spring is a tad on the weak side so it's easily done with my size eleven and a half riding boots.

Little and often Ted. Little and often. You'll get bikefit then.

Once I'm on the open road I'm quite relaxed at 50-60 mph  - tbh 70 mph seems very very fast!
The more you ride, the more confident you will get,

How are you at slow speeds, and balance?

Can you find an area, empty car park, and practice left and right turning, even figures of eight,

Just build up gradually

The most important thing

Enjoy

Get that 500 0n the road - much more comfortable than the 400 if I recall ! when turning out of your drive make sure your head is turned to look down the road ( not straight ahead)  and try setting off slower and faster to see which gives you a better feeling of control.try to get your feet on pegs asap - it feels more in control.  Keep away from the front brake lever which is the cause of many a drop in these circumstances.Glad to hear you’re getting out but see my other post today 👍

Practising off road is a great suggestion, see how slowly you can ride without putting foot down, even stopping.  Also, get used to only putting down the left foot when you come to a stop, your right foot covers the rear brake.  In my opinion, one should never be moving forward with both feet off the pegs, just the left one for an instant as it comes up onto the peg as you move off.  I learned this on my Star Rider course about 300 years ago.  When ready to move off, swap to right foot on floor, engage gear, swap back to left, release clutch.  Practise until it becomes second nature.  Then when you see inexperienced riders proceed for a few meters up the road with legs dangling you will wince.  ;D

Interesting comments/ advice very informative. I'm okay with my balance when stopping I tend to drop down the gears to second or third then put just my right foot down, select neutral then both feet down at say traffic lights. At roundabouts & junctions where I need to fully stop I select first gear but keep the clutch in then put my right foot out to wait for a suitable gap in the traffic. Not thought about what my head is doing other than getting a good view!

Probably not helped by the fact I've driven an automatic car for the last 35 years!

Looks like fun, I don't think I have ever seen so many bikes all in one place.  Who organises these things and why do I never hear about them?  I guess I live in a bubble.

What happens is,a couple of bikers chat, and one mentions they are going to the weekly charity bike night,
In this case Cotswolds Biker night,

Held every Wednesday during the summer at different pubs,

The past few weeks have visited

Bretforton
Stow on the Wold
Morton in the Marsh
Stroud
Forest of Dean

You can find the website,
It's all run by Stephanie Shaw,

And up to date the bikers have raised around £140,000 for the Midlands Air Ambulance,
On a fine, warm evening, about 700 bikes attend

There is likely something like this in all areas

For me,last night was only 60mile round trip, other nights can be up to 130 round trip

Come out and enjoy

Wow, I had a look at the internet and there seem to be loads of bike gatherings and clubs of various kinds.  Very rarely this far west though.  Thanks will keep looking, might be fun to speak to other bikers.

If they still do it, look for the Plymouth Megaride. Last time I did it was 2001, there were 2000 bikes finishing up on Plymouth Hoe with stalls, live band, the works.

I've been commuting 100miles a day on the bikes this week and probably for the next month or so.
Started of on the Aprilia and managed about 20 ft before the water pump packed in. Jumped on the Guzzi and that lasted a day before I got a puncture that destroyed the rear tyre.
So back on the trusty 750.
Not that that has been trouble free. Got to work to find the key had fallen out of the ignition. Thankfully not an issue as I could turn it with just about anything that would fit in the hole. Disided that wasn't very secure so fitted the ignition barrel from the gold 750 and discovered today that the bike will run if the key is in the parking light position. That can't be Wright?

Thanks Ted, I’ve had it a couple of years now and have made a few changes, nothing too drastic but I’m really happy with how it is now. All the original bits are boxed and ready to put back on in twenty years when originality is what I will probably want.

Like a lot of us here we sometimes hanker for makes we have owned in our younger days.
Ioved my Triumph 21 especially the click type speedoneter - my Mum hated it due to the oil leaks it always had.
I'm way out of date with newer models (Post 1970) I see it has twin shocks at the rear is that a retro thing by Triumph or is it older than it looks?

Lovely bikes and especially the Triton. I like how he's braced the downpipes, very similar to how I have braced mine. Considering he is racing the Triton the idea appears to work in practice, I'm still to get my bike actually on the road👍

Yes I have always been fond of Tritons, in the 70's my mate had a Dresda Triton with some mad compression ratio, kicking it over was risky, but boy did it move and handle well.
