Having got my bike out for service in the hope that I can ride it again soon, I notice that the fasteners holding the cam cover are starting to rust. I have not had these zinc coated when I restored it. I 'm thinking of replacing these bolts with stainless (with copper grease).
What are your feelings on the use of stainless

If you are going to change all your fasteners to stainless, if I send you a pre paid envelope, can I have them please. I will get them re zinced and use them. Don't just bin them for goodness sake.

I'll get in touch when I have swapped them out, bear in mind i can't order stuff at the moment. I'm only doing the cam cover as they rust each year, I never throw owt away Julie. I was really trying to get people's opinions on using stainless.

I have some stainless fixings on my CB550/4 Mongrel and they are fine for that. Personally, I prefer standard fixings on proper standard bikes but I think its a personal choice thing really. Why can't you order at the moment?

What bike? On the 500 allen heads get in the way of some tappet caps

When I rebuilt mine I used stainless where you could not see it (main stand for example) and re plated where you could, the purists will not like it but the engine is fully Allen bolt, lots of copper grease used.

I rebuilt my 400/4 in 1985 using st/st screws/bolts everywhere with copperslip, and there was not a single problem after 30 yrs, every thing came apart for inspection with no problems, although I did use dome headed st/st allen screws around the tappet covers to gain space on rebuild this time.

How about Titanium as they really are imperiously to virtually any type of corrosion

I think the cost of titanium screws etc on a full rebuild would be over the top, if you can source 316 st/steel ones they are resistant to most things.

I've got a lot of stainless on my 400. Most are available from Stig's Stainless Fasteners. www.a2stainless.co.uk
He has shouldered set screws if you want them.
