Title: Main stand spindle removal HELP!!
Post by: Rozabikes Tim on May 13, 2011, 07:50:43 PM
Stripping 400/4 frame  as I am breaking the bike and usual seized main stand spindle problem has occurred. Tried drifting it out and it won't budge. Going to try some heat but any other ideas much appreciated.

Heat's definitely a good way to try it to see if it will move at all.

I'd lay it on it's side and make a good support for the stand near the pivot so that when you drift it the load passes through the stand rather than the frame tabs, I usually use bits of old railway sleeper for this sort of support as it is solid but doesn't usually damage the metal.

You could try one of those hammer drills that you can turn off rotation to give drive to a drift with some small shock force as opposed to itting-wiv-a-big-ammer method.

Thanks what a good idea re hammer drill as I am frightened of flaring tube out with drift / hammer. I have and SDS drill with exactly that function. Will report progress.

Mainstand + heat + Hammer drill idea + hammer + sweat + frustration = HACKSAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Never mind breaking it anyway but don't like being beaten.
