Title: Import duty - Japan
Post by: Rozabikes Tim on February 05, 2013, 11:10:24 PM
Looking at a big bore kit from Japan on eBay for my 400/4. The feedback all seems well besides some gripes re import duty. What is the rate one should expect (plus vat too) and do you always get picked up on larger items?

Any experience / info appreciated.

Its a bit of a crap shoot with HMRC but about 50% of parcels with a declared value over £39 get done.

Import duty about 3-6%
then VAT at 20% on the total of declared value + the duty + the postage
THEN the post office charge £11 for the privelige of collecting your money and passing it on

Thanks Bryan,

Doesn't sound too bad besides the post office cream off bit.

I've had 3 parcels from the states in the last 2-3 months and 2 of them had charges the other slipped through.

I've had a parcel from Japan as well (not recently) and I had a charge on that.
