After a couple of false starts on bikes that were to good to "customise" Ive finally got one to play with. I really like the look of Graham and Julies "mongrels". So mine will be along the same lines, using whatever I have available or can reasonably obtain. I'm a fair way into the build and as is usual the first casualty is the budget. It was actualy Graham that pointed out the bike to me and a trip to Liverpool later I was the proud owner of what friends and family call "another pile o shite".
The seller assured me it was all there and just needed putting together, yeah right. To be fair he was selling because he was going blind so cant be too critical.
So this is how it came.

Seeing it is this side of the country now, you may as well not have all the worriers and hassle. Lets say £100 and i will take if off your hands ;)
-
You'll have that on the road by the weekend! ;D
-
Blimey Gary you do like your flatpack kit bikes with missing instructions. ;D ;D ;D
-
Looks to be mostly there honest

and more

Lots of goodies for the price Gary. I will try to find your next project closer to home ;)
-
Looks like a standard camchain Gary, shame as I still have a couple of heavy duty ones left.
-
It came as part of the package. Ill be in touch if there's a next time.

more progress

Clocks and seat are a work in progress and may well get binned. (well put aside)

Some advice Gary. I personally would not have fitted the head to the engine at this point, barrels maybe but I tend to wait until the bottom end is in place before I fit the top end, just to make it easier to fit the engine into the frame, it's a big heavy lump and it's very easy to hurt yourself doing this, crushed fingers etc. Mainly though it's the try and avoid frame paint damage, the lighter the engine the easier it is to get it into place. However we are where we are so I'd say don't fit the clutch or the rotor, remove the points plate before fitting as well, they are easily damaged and they ain't cheap to replace these days. With no clutch fitted you have a good handhold there, end of the crank on the other side is also good. No oil pan, no filter housing.
Spotted there is no seal fitted inside the tacho drive, has that since been done?
-
No, nothing else will be fitted until its in and yes I have a tacho seal somewhere.
-
Have you given up with the idea of putting a kick up hoop on the frame ?
-
For the moment Ill leave as is. Depends on how the back end looks, I can fit a hoop if it doesn't work out.
-
Moving along nicely. Only real issue has been lack of parts which is stretching the budget somewhat.
Im pressing on with the 550 clutch conversion but its been "challenging".

Sent you a PM mate ;)

Here is the Free choice Gary.

Sorted the cable, thanks.

As discussed Gary.

Thanks Julie.

Have a load of the rubbers Gary but, i have two different types at different lengths. I know one is 500/550 F1,F2 the others are 550K3 but can not remember which is which mate. Do you have the old ones to measure up ?
[attachimg=1]
The two different lengths. As you can see mate, the end ones are taller .

The distance from manifold to ruler edge is 24mm if this helps.
-
Look at the second picture and you will see the end two are slightly higher. The picture is of the middle ones that fit 2&3.

I had a little ride up to Graham and Julies place today, got a nice cup of tea and stole some some rare parts, thanks mate.
Also had a look at the number plate mounts on their mongrels. Im not keen on side mounts and did not cut the back end off my bike in the hope of coming up with something.
So on the way back I had a mooch round B and Q and bought some angle brackets. I think this will work but might end up using the brackets as templates for something more substantial.
I dont think they will flex/bend but they might be a bit "bouncy. (already had the light/plate mount)

Stupid camera was in some kind of special effects mode. Corse it could be me.[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]

Could you fit a bracket on the inside of each of the indicator bolts & attach them to the B&Q strips to improve overall rigidity?
The plate bracket seems a long way off a vertical number plate mount for some level of legality.

Maybe, still working on it.

Not sure what the law is, Ill google it.

60. Fixing of registration plate
(1) (a) Where a vehicle has been so designed that a space has been provided for the fixing
of a registration plate, the plate shall be fixed in the space so provided.
( Where a space is not provided the plate shall be fixed in the manner specified in
paragraph (2).
(2) Subject to paragraph (3), a registration plate shall be fixed vertically or, where that is not
reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practical at the front and
rear of every motor vehicle in such manner that the characters of the registration mark shall, at all
times, be visible from the front or the rear of the motor vehicle.
-
If you are riding on the A515 towards Buxton from Ashbourne your plate will be spot on for the Bear in the Air that clocks speeders . 8) 8) 8)
I think you need to comply with Para 2 in the unlikely event that you ever encounter the Dodo that was the Road Traffic Department even then it would most likely be just a VDRS ticket!
-
I guess that the 'reasonably practical' test there is that if it's any more vertical it will foul the rear tyre, and/or break off against it.
My mounting is an angled piece that runs between the two indicator bolts (ie 1 inch or so long, then a 90 degree turn, then runs between the frame rails then another 90 degree turn/1 inch. The 1 inch bits are drilled and bolt to the indicator/ mudguard mounting holes), so the number plate ends up similar to yours but the mount is fixed between the two ends/ arms of the frame. Doesn't bounce at all. (It was a bracket from a gas fire that just happened to be the perfect fit).

Any chance of a picture, Ive avoided crossing between the indicator holes in case it catches the tyre.

Nice seeing you mate. My mates dog was not :o
I would put a bridge bracket between where you have the indicators mounted. This would give extra strength ;)
-
Yes, still working on it.
-
Well as far as the build goes Im calling it done
It runs OK but needs carb balance and timing tweaking. ( i bought a strobe Graham). Busy with house renovation atm and chasing another pile of scrap to keep me busy over winter.
-
Well done Gary 👍👍👍
-
Looks a bit different than some boxes of parts. Balance the carbs before you strobe in the ignition and connect the strobe to a independent battery mate ;)
-
Liking the look of that Gary! Nice work!

Cheers Graham, will do.
