Anybody remember Chevette E models, bad rust at 1st mot due to every multi story round liverpool being full of primered shells when factory on strike.
Basic model sold as "special" at cheap price

The Opel Kadette model C circa 1974 (based on the same floor plan as the Vauxhall Chevette) also launched a basic model with a small puny pushrod 1 litre engine to attract buyers who were worried about potential fuel rationing.  This variant was also to use up stocks of  bodyshells that had built up in Germany & Belgium due to the virtual collapse of the UK car market during the fuel crisis.

On a similar note when I was in the car trade during the 3 day week due to power workers strikes - circa 1973/4 we sold new Opel Mantas Mk1's new in 1975/6 that were in fact 3 years old due to importers & dealer storage!!

They were discounted bargain buys as the Opels did not deteriorate much during storage unlike the Audi 100's that arrived from Audi UK with holes in the roof from Seagull droppings that burnt through the factory body waxing!!

We were paid by Aidi to fix them back to standard factory finish - we did a basic job on the pin holes and put a "Free" vinyl roof on them using a free Vinyl roof as a promotional tool.

It's a strange thing but as I am approaching fitting the tank and getting close to an attempted start up I feel myself slowing down fearing unforeseen issues. I ought instead to be estatic at the prospect - is this normal !!

Oh boy, do I understand that feeling!

Thank goodness I thought I was alone with the unsaid dread!

Thanks everyone for your support - now it's all about the Bike.

Last night I drained out the bulk of the 10 Litres of Evaporust - I  filtered back into original containers as its not fully spent yet.
Results are amazing - shame I can't get my phone into the tank - its 98% like new everywhere I can see clean silver metal!
The bit that's rather patchy is what I would describe as the inside hump near the filler cap - it has a few spots near the top of the ridge hence I can't call it 100%! Trouble is it needs about 13 Litres to full it right up - maybee another time.

Drained out the last remnants of Evaporust this morning - now the first rinse out using a pint or so of fresh petrol, 325 ml of Wynns Dry Fuel plus 1/3 pint approx of 2T Oil.
I will slosh that all around to try to inhibit any further rusting.

Knowing my luck the Carbs will decide to flood just to set me back a few days. Wish I had tested them with fuel before I refitted them now!

This Friday all things being equal it will be fitting the rebuilt Petcock and putting some proper petrol in the tank!

I'm back on with working on the bike - going to remove the Evaporust today - then add some petrol with 2T oil to give the tank some inside protection.

As its sunny and getting towards the back end of the Carp season I'm fishing this afternoon - planning to fit the tank tomorrow and sort out the static timing.

Starter button pressing hopefully before the weekend.

Had a good phone call yesterday from my Urologist who says the CT scan reveals no further problems with cancer spread - right kidney removal should be in the next 4 weeks - end of October by the latest provided Covid does not mess up admissions.

Wow that sound of it running is music to my ears I'm really chuffed for you- that is where I want to be by mid October at the latest if I can!

I expect mine to be noisier due to the known cam chain rattle and leaking exhaust though. ;D

Wow thats a massive looking engine - or is it a trick of the fish eye lens!

I started with Honda's in the late 1960's so you are a youngster here unless you started biking in your 40's.

You will love this site - even the daftest questions are answered without mocking. (mostly lol)

Welcome Dave,

I'm pretty new here as well - currently in phase 1 - getting my CB400F2 running before full  strip down over the winter. Slightly behind target date but there is no rush,

Next year I'm planning a run up to Mathewsons Auctions with the Missus - on 4 wheels though are you near there?
As you may have already discovered - listen to Nurse Julie she knows her stuff!

As I understand the process the ampage is the critical factor that drives the plating process, hence the 100 mAmps per square inch. The power box I borrowed allowed me to set ampage and the box adjusted the voltage, I often had nearly 0.5V showing so a measurement of the amp draw is essential.

I will take that onboard if I decide to try it - my BiL Dave has a kit of some sort but no solution yet.

Zinc plating kit that sound cool - I'll have to research it do you have a sellers link ?
Sorry, just seen post - same company as already suggested - https://www.gaterosplating.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=231
I also use an aquarium heaters and themometer to sort correct temp - to be honest, its only in the winter I bother with them as in the summer, its 'near enough'

Thanks for that Phil - as I keep tropical fish in my outside fishhouse/garage office annex the temperature will not be an issue.
Cheers Ted

Cibie went for the concave headlamp glass back in the 1960's I went for the alternative Carello Pajods they had a parabolic reflectors with a good dip cut off like Cibie. So they would fit in a standard British Lucas headlamp bowl the lenz was a sort of of bulge eyed convex lens.
It looked as if the lens was a good inch deeper so they really stuck out - they were incredibly expensive cost me £40 for the pair - at trade prices this was when a sealed beam unit could be bought for about £1.50s.  Sadly no longer made.

Don't you mean you set them lower or do you mean if you pushed the floats up then it closed the valve ?

The lower the float height in the bowl the greater the leverage between the Tab and the float needle so it shuts off earlier?

When setting my float heights with the Carbs upside down the float Tab would be just  touching the sprung part of the needle valve without depressing it. I then measured the gap between the Carb body and the bottom of the float that on mine were flat - as per NJ's pictures in her float height setting guide.

Looking at your upside down picture the spring clips look the wrong way up to me ? I'm an amature so listen to NJ.
