Title: 500 low rise handlebar conversion
Post by: petermigreen on May 12, 2017, 10:10:59 PM
Evening all,
I went for a little spin on my 500 tonight in preparation for an MOT in the morning, which is the first time I have ridden the bike (except for around the garden). Since buying the bike I have had my reservations about the US spec bars and having now ridden it I'm convinced that I don't like them. Maybe it's an acquired taste but I felt the handling was awful.

So I would like to convert to a low rise bar like on my 400/4. DSS have a low rise set (but without cable routing holes) and 4into1 also offer alternatives but I'm nervous about throttle and clutch cables to suit the new lower/shorter reach bars.

Has anyone done this conversion that can offer advice or does anyone have the lower bars on a UK bike that can advise on cable length.
Thanks in advance (wish me luck on the MOT).
Peter.

Just buy the UK cable from DS, having taken out the appropriate mortgage that is

Yes of course, silly me.
Because I've got my US version bikes bookmarked on DSS I didn't think to look at the UK parts.

Thanks Bryan.

Just a note. DSS do offer a low rise bar for the 550F if you look and I asked one of the DS guys to get out both the 500 (without the holes) and the 550F that has them and he said he couldn't really tell them apart. I have the 550F bars on a 550 and intend to fit another set to a 500.
But buying cables has been tricky. Most of the aftermarket ones have been too long short and I have spent an age routing and re-routing. As Bryan says try to get the correct UK Honda spare or measure and get made to size. There was a post recently about getting throttle cables specially made.

All very helpful thank you and I like the 550 bars tip.

Appreciate it. Peter.

Don't you need an engine in it for the MOT?

No, I checked. The bike doesn't have to be running. ;)

I reacon the Hatz 1d40 or Ruggerini 8hp aircooled diesels in my shed would fill that gap in the frame nicely and be less sacriligious than a yam engine....

;D ;D ;D ;D

Okay for you purists that insist on at least seeing an engine in a motorbike here it is fresh from being approved by the local MOT testing agent. Happy days on with the registration process.

Thanks again to Oddjob for the tank, once the summer's over I'll have the tinware painted and I might even get out a polishing rag.

Glad you took my advice and refitted the engine.  That's that for another year.
