if a bloke built it.....a bloke can fix it !

Best of luck and if you reach a point where you get stuck, sit down, pour yourself a beer, whisky, brandy or whatever your tipple is and ask your Dad what he'd do.................and he answer WILL be forthcoming.

Great to see another 'grand old Lady' back on the road again.....and another 'good job well done' by yourself.

I'm privileged as I have seen your splendid CB350 Four, CB450 and your GS1000 in the flesh and running so I am able to say just what a great job you have done on all of them, and i have no doubt the CB750 will have reached the same standard of excellence.

Well done mate........enjoy the spring rides on it now.

I worked for an American manufacturer of Compressors in the 70's and 80's in Manchester. We got a new 'Whizz Kid' looking after our large Stores. He had a major clear out of stuff that had been sitting on the shelves for years - OSMI it was called - Obsolete and Slow Moving Inventory. First he advertised it throughout our Corporate Business, with limited success....then the remainder went into the scrap bin....as it was costing us money to keep it !

We had five Rolls Royce Avon Gas Generators in stock at the time.......they had been paid for up front to power our Turbo Compressors but the contract was cancelled so we had them in our Stores for a couple of years.....every 6 months a RR Engineer used to come and check them - making sure their Silica Gel Bags and protection etc was still functioning - as part of the RR Warranty. Obviously the fact that we had these in stock got back to RR sales Department and they asked if we wanted to sell them back to RR. There was an 18 month waiting list to have new Avon Jet Engines made and the price since we'd bought them had gone through the roof.

Said Whizz kid cut a very advantageous deal for both parties and he came out of it smelling of roses !

I also worked for a Company in Canada that made large overhead Cranes....and after the Crane left the Factory, anything that was left on the shop floor went in the skip....as it cost more to catalogue and store than than it was worth....plus the Customer had paid for it !

Not to be outdone by all you 'intrepid bikers'.......this is moi today - at the perimeter fence of Blackpool Airport.....Blackpool Tower is in the distance behind the bike. Fantastic day for a ride and as sleet and rain are forecast for the rest of the week, I thought I'd get out while I can.

Got this CB1300S in November as I really missed having a big bike - with big fat tyres - so the CB600F got chucked in PX from Castle Motorcycles in Castleford......brilliant people and great to deal with. Happy to recommend them.

Had two of these CB1300's before, an 04 and an 06 both from new. Still a brilliant bike 16 years and 17K later, and I'm proper pleased with this well looked after 08 example. Happy as a pig in the proverbial ! Roll on summer !

I'd use a good Machine Shop.

Mine was a tight fit with the internal locking ring and as I had a really difficult struggle to dismantle it, I didn't want a future owner to have the same problems.

As the hub was dismantled, the Machinist only cost a few quid and I was much happier when the two parts went back together smoothly.

Fantastic tale from Sean that reminds me of my 'Road Trip; from Toronto to the Rockies' back in 1976. I first passed through Detroit and Chicago on my Suzuki GT500; completely underwhelmed.......the parts I rode through were dumps ! After that I specifically rode on minor or 'backroads'....most US roads basically go North to South or East to West, so you can't really get lost ! At the time I just headed where I felt like it......no real plan other than to see the places that I'd read about and fancied as a kid. The Dakota Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, The Little Big Horn (I switched the engine off and coasted down about 10 miles from where General George Custer lost his life), Yellowstone National Park (Fanbloodytastic) and came back into Canada through Glacier National Park and then on to the Rockies. I had planned to see Vancouver but the beauty of Banff and Jasper meant I stayed there until I had to get home to Toronto. 6K miles in 3 weeks.

My 21 year old Grandson has decided after he finished Uni last September that Snowboarding is the life for him, so he's upped sticks and got himself a job as a Bellhop at a swanky Hotel in Banff...........'Snowboards R Us' it seems......I'm so pleased that he's got to enjoy the most beautiful scenery on earth at such a young age. He says that he gets well paid simply to 'smile and be nice to people', and when he opens the curtains each day "It doesn't get any better than this" ! I doubt if he'll ever come back to sunny Manchester.......but if he does I'll get him into motorbikes.........that's probably the best gift I can leave him.

SOHC Singles & Twins / Re: Spoke advice please.

It's worth changing to stainless. Old spokes can lose their integrity over the years and can suffer damage (or breakage in the threaded section) when they are undone and re-tightened. For the relatively low cost of new S/S and peace of mind, I'd just change them.

A wheelbuilder (if you choose to use one) might not be happy to re-use the old spokes.....and they might not guarantee the work if any reused old spokes break later.

I have had two sets of wheels rebuilt and the wheelbuilder (Alan Atkinson at Southport Wheelbuilders) suggested new S/S spokes while he was at it....and I have to agree that was the right decision.

Good luck.

Best tip I can offer you (and anyone reading this) is to buy a good quality Cordless Tool/ Batteries and then add accessories to it each Birthday and Christmas as your Family never know what to buy you !

It takes a few years to reach Nirvana.....but you'll save a lot of heartache (and bruises) on the journey.

Personally I like Makita stuff....my Cordless Circular Saw and my Hedgetrimmer are tools that I wouldn't be without now, but there are plenty of other excellent manufacturers out there.

These Honda 400's are just beautiful.

If you were going to make perfect motorcycles........Hondas would be what you made......of course there are other makes.......but over the years didn't Honda get it just right....time after time.

Well done John.....enjoy your bike......as my SIL says, 'There will be plenty of time for sleeping when I'm dead'.

I used a length of angle iron to lock the bits when I replaced the Oil Seals on my Kwacker ZZR1100. Locked everything up quite nicely. It failed it's MOT on leaking Oil Seals....although it was actually the oil mist from the WD40 that I always used on the exposed areas of the forks - but the MOT Tester at Kays Motorcycles wouldn't have it ! I should have wiped the forks over before I put it in for it's MOT !

The following year it was failed for the headlamp aim.....even though I said if any minor adjustments were needed, just to do them and i'd happily pay. Getting the bike home again and back to Alf's in Worthing was a right ferking PITA !

I never went back to either Dealer again.

Big respect to you fella........frightens me to death just the thought of being out on that big ocean in a small boat !

A workmate of number one Daughter did the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge (Rowing) some years ago.........fantastic achievement with a crew of 4 rowing across the Atlantic. He still does presentations about his trip to Schools around Bolton and he's still raising big bucks for the various Kids Organisations that he supports. Top, top bloke in my view.

We were able to track his boats progress and how the other boats were doing every day so maybe the sohc Members will be able to do the same with your boat........give us some details of how we might follow your exploits and I'm sure you'll get some extra  dosh from us 'armchair warriors'....I'll certainly chip in.

Lastly.......I wish the best of luck to you - and ALL the participants.

Learning to drive a car in the 60's my Instructor turned up one day and couldn't stop chuckling to himself. I asked why.......he'd just heard that the Lady who owned the local Female Only Driving School was out with a female pupil and was applying her make up in the vanity mirror when the pupil came to a roundabout and asked which way she should go......."Straight on" said the Instructor....so she did....right over the grass roundabout !
