Title: Clutch Issue

My clutch sems to be engaging in two steps, the first quickly and the second more slowly. The lever is fairly heavy.
I have trawled the forum for posts and it appears that the cable is a possible culprit. Assume genuine is the way to go, with careful routing.
The mechanism is well greased and appears to be good and the pushrod is in one piece.
Have I missed anything?

I'd agree with the cable change if you don't know provenance of it. The originals are lined for friction reduction which makes them pretty good for linearity (if that's the right way to describe it) when under tension.

I use silicone oil in cables too as it doesn't impact materials but improves the loading further and they feel close to hydraulic.

It is not unheard of for the scroll mechanism to crack and cause tightness under load

Thank you all, Will have a look at the weekend. DS only lists an OEM replacement and not genuine.
 Are these OK?

Try ordering one from your local Honda dealer but get the part number first and it depends on wether you have uk or us bard

Found a new old stock one on ebay. Awaiting delivery. Will check the other things when I have the cover off to change the cable.

Well, finally took it apart. Cable routing was fine, cable itself was not particularly bad. The stationary part of the clutch mechanism had a piece missing above the threaded area, so that is to be replaced.
Does the arm itself wear? Thinking of replacing both parts while it is apart, but the extra 70 or so quid had to be factored in. May just bite the bullet and do both.

This is a 500 right?  The clutch as standard was always on the heavy side and of course completely changed for the 550.
There was a service bulletin -09 on these parts. Available in Aladdin's cave. The original adjuster was 22841-266-000 (which was a hangover from smaller bikes and the CB450) was superseded by 22841-323-000 which was supposed to reduce friction and reduce wear. Anyone know if it worked? CMS and DSS only list the earlier p/n. The 323 version is very rare and I do not know how to tell them apart.

The -323- one is on mine (CB500K2-ED) and has always worked fine. Never had a problem with the rod either. The CB500 clutch is a bit stiff though.

It was a very old design by the time it reached the 500. There is a 22841-202-000 that was on the CB92 from 1959 that looks the same.
How do you know yours is a 323 part? The bulletin is Aug 76. Apart from the limited no (4000?) Euro 500s that had 550 type lower end, I thought all 500s were finished by then.

Nope Honda carried on making the 500K1 for UK right up until550K3 and 550F came in and there were a few left in crates for a while then

Thanks for the info. The parts I saw were on DS site and listed the earlier part number. The arm piece is an aftermarket part that is made of better materials. Not ideal if the centre is made from the traditional monkey metal. Guess I will just replace the centre piece and if it feels rough, replace the arm section.

Yes we only got K1s I think. So not all K2s are the same as later Euro 500s carried on longer and got the new part.
Just to add to the mix I have a 500 Honda owners handbook marked K2 that has a 550 clutch shown. It's not the for the later (4000) Euro 500s as it shows original 4 in line idiot lights etc. Probably a very limited no.

I know what Owner's Manual you are referring to. It has two odd errors. The clutch shown in p. 72 was not on any CB500K2 and neither was the blow-by breather element shown on p. 66. Very strange.
